Is it Art? is a series of books focusing on exciting contemporary art forms. From graffiti to junk sculptures and from urban street art to installations, Is it Art? offers young readers examples from each medium and tells the story behind their creation. The series also encourages discussion and suggests activities so that readers can try making their own art. So what is Junk Sculpture? Well, it's basically rubbish! Junk sculpture can be made from just about anything that has been thrown away, from coat hangers to Cadillacs. Some sculptors see junk as a fantastic source of otherwise expensive materials and a way of recycling and reusing the planet's resources. Others see junk as a way of making art contemporary and thought-provoking by using modern or unusual materials, rather than classic sculpting materials such as bronze or marble. Whatever your opinion, the sculptures in this book are guaranteed to get you thinking about the things we throw away.

Some artists believe anything can be art—even trash! Junk sculpture is a new, complex mode of art that combines the wastefulness of modern living with finding beauty in what others consider ugly. Readers learn how artists create such pieces and are asked to consider whether junk sculpture can be called art in the same way a painting or drawing is. A colorful layout full of many pictures of junk sculpture introduces readers to the many forms junk sculpture may take, such as fashion, pillars formed from plastic, and more.

Junk written by Gillian Whiteley and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-11-30 with Art categories.

Trash, garbage, rubbish, dross, and detritus - in this enjoyably radical exploration of 'Junk', Gillian Whiteley rethinks art's historical and present appropriation of junk within our eco-conscious and globalised culture. She does this through an illustrated exploration of particular materials, key moments and locations and the telling of a panoply of trash narratives. Found and ephemeral materials are primarily associated with assemblage - object-based practices which emerged in the mid-1950s and culminated in the seminal exhibition 'The Art of Assemblage' in New York in 1961. With its deployment of the discarded and the filthy, Whiteley argues, assemblage has been viewed as a disruptive, transgressive artform that engaged with narratives of social and political dissent, often in the face of modernist condemnation as worthless kitsch. In the Sixties, parallel techniques flourished in Western Europe, the US and Australia but the idiom of assemblage and the re-use of found materials and objects - with artist as bricoleur - is just as prevalent now. This is a timely book that uncovers the etymology of waste and the cultures of disposability within these economies of wealth.

Crazy Art will be a revelation to anyone who thinks that art is more or less limited to painting, sculpture and photography. The title features the work of more than sixty contemporary artists drawn from all over the world, demonstrating that there are absolutely no boundaries to expressing the most inventive and exciting ideas through a vast range of different media and materials. Five chapters pitch well-known artists - such as Carl Warner with his bizarre "foodscapes", or Nathan Swaya, creator of Brick Art, and Larry Moss with his famous balloon sculptures - alongside young practitioners like Pei-Sang Ng, an artist whose stunning matchstick designs burn brightly but all too briefly. Each artist and subject receives a short introduction, whilst illustrations and detailed descriptions provide insight into their most important, individual and creative works of art. From Food Art to Body Art, Junk Art to Street and even Dust Art, Crazy Art brings their original, radical and provocative ideas to life. Website links guide the reader toward more information on the artists, their work and the galleries or museums that give them patronage.
