Buku tidak bermaksud memberikan katagorisasi secara baku dan pasti tentang siapa saja tokoh yang dimasukkan ke dalam kelompok Islam liberal. Karena, usaha seperti ini hanya akan dihadapkan pada masalah mendasar terkait dengan generalisasi yang selalu mengabaikan aspekaspek partikularitas yang terkadang justru menunjukkan karakter dan identitas seseorang yang membedakannya dengan kelompoknya sendiri sekalipun. Kendala inilah yang dihadapi oleh Charles Kurzman dan Greg Barton di dalam bukunya masing-masing yang mencoba membuat katagorisasi siapa saja yang layak dimasukkan dalam daftar tokoh Islam liberal. Usaha yang dilakukan oleh kedua sarjana Barat ini mendapat kritikan dari banyak kalangan. Kesulitan dalam membuat katagorisasi siapa tokoh yang masuk ke dalam Islam liberal ini ternyata juga dialami oleh seorang Adian Husaini yang terkenal sebagai tokoh yang sangat besar perhatiannya terhadap sepak terjang kelompok Islam liberal dan selalu melakukan kritik-kritik tajam serta sanggahan terhadap setiap pemikiran dan gagasan yang dikeluarkan oleh para pengusung Islam liberal. Kesulitan yang dihadapi dalam membuat katagorisasi tokoh-tokoh Islam liberal ini menurutnya adalah karena sebagian para penyebar ide liberal tidak mendeklarasikan dirinya sebagai ‘orang liberal Islam’ atau ‘Islam liberal’, kendala yang lainnya dan yang paling mendasar adalah bahwa setiap upaya katagorisasi adalah ‘generalisasi’. Dan generalisasi selalu mengabaikan aspek-aspek lain yang lebih khusus yang membedakannya dari yang lain.

Penulis memandang bahwa penilaian tentang warna atau corak pemikiran orang, baik itu dikatagorikan liberal, tradisionalis, konservatif, radikal dan sebagainya, bila hanya disandarkan kepada salah satu atau beberapa pemikiran, bukan pemikiran secara utuh orang yang bersangkutan terkesan tidak adil dan objektif, sehingga sulit dipertanggung jawabkan secara ilmiah dan akademis. Karena menurut hamat penulis bahwa setiap pemikiran yang lahir dan tercetus dari diri seseorang itu tidak harus sewarna dalam segala hal atau permasalahan yang disikapi dan dipikirkannya, karena boleh jadi dalam satu hal seseorang berwarna liberal tetapi dalam hal lain bercorak tradisionalis, sehingga tidak bisa juga kemudian digeneralisasi seseorang itu pemikirannya berwarna liberal atau tradisionalis saja. Dan karena itu, maka tidak bisa juga kemudian kita menghubungkan pemikiran seseorang itu hanya kepada bentuk pemikiran tertentu, misalnya liberal. Sebab, bila seseorang itu pemikirannya secara keseluruhan mengandung katakan dua warna, liberal dan tradisionalis sekaligus, maka pemikirannya itu dapat mempengaruhi pemikiran orang ke dalam dua warna pemikiran pula, yaitu liberal dan tradisionalis, bukan hanya liberal. Malah, sekalipun pemikiran seseorang itu hanya memiliki warna tradisionalis saja misalnya, maka tidak kemudian secara otomatis akan mempengaruhi pemikiran orang lain menjadi tradisionalis juga. Sebab, pemikiran yang berwarna tradisionalis itu bisa dipahami dan ditafsirkan secara berbeda oleh orang yang berbeda, sehingga pemikiran yang berwarna tradisionalis akan membawa seseorang berpikiran liberal jika dipahami sesuai dengan semangat dan kecenderungan liberal, begitupun juga sebaliknya pemikiran yang liberal dapat membawa seseorang berpikiran tradisionalis jika dipahami sesuai dengan semangat dan kecenderungan tradisionalis. Sebagai contoh misalnya, orang menyebut Ibnu Taymiyah sebagai tokoh tradisionalis, tetapi kemudian seorang Nurcholish memahami pandangan Ibnu Taymiyah tentang makna kata islam dengan semangat yang berbeda, sehingga, berdasarkan pada pandangan islam Ibnu Taymiyah inilah justru Nurcholish menggagas pandangan inklusif-pluralisnya yang dinilai bersifat liberal. Berbeda dengan Nurcholish, bagi seorang Adian Husaini makna kata Islam Ibnu Taymiyah justru mengantarkannya kepada pandangan Islam tradisionalis. Dalam pandangan Adian Husaini seorang Muslim seharusnya memiliki sikap yang pasrah dan tunduk kepada Tuhan (Allah) dan terikat dengan hukum-hukum yang dibawa Nabi Muhammad saw, sesuai dengan makna “Islam” secara lughawi “pasrah”.

The resurgence of Islamic fundamentalism in the 1980s influenced many in the Islamic world to reject Western norms of liberal rationality and to return, instead, to their own tradition for political and cultural inspiration. This rejection of foreign thought threatens to end the centuries-long dialogue between Islam and the West, a dialogue that has produced a nascent Middle Eastern liberalism, along with many less desirable forms of discourse. With Islamic Liberalism, Leonard Binder hopes to reinvigorate that dialogue, asking whether political liberalism can take root in the Middle East without a vigorous Islamic liberalism. But, Binder asks, is an Islamic liberalism possible? The Islamic political community presents special problems to the development of an indigenous liberalism. That community is conceived of as divinely ordained, and its notions of the good are to be derived from scriptural revelation, not arrived at through rational discourse. Liberal politics would seem to stand little chance of surviving in such an atmosphere, let alone thriving. Binder responds to the challenge of Edward Said's critique of Orientalism, of a range of neo-Marxian development theorists, of Sayyid Qutb's fundamentalist vision, of Samir Amin's vision of Egypt's role in the Arab awakening, of Tariq al-Bishri's new populism, of Zaki Najib Mahmud's pragmatism, and the structuralism of Arkoun and Laroui. The deconstruction of these varied texts produces a number of persuasive hermeneutical conclusions that are sequentially woven together in a critical argument that refocuses our attention on the central question of political freedom and democracy. In the course of constructing this argument, Binder reopens the dialogue between Western modernity and Islamic authenticity and reveals the surprising extent to which there is a convergent interest in liberal, democratic, civil society. Finally, in a concluding chapter, he addresses the prospects for liberalism in the three major bourgeois states of Islam—Egypt, Turkey, and Iran.

Salah satunya yakni Prof. KH. Abdul Kahar Muzakkir merupakan ulama dan pejuang kemerdekaan yang jarang sekali kita dengar namanya di deretan para tokoh pejuang kemerdekaan. Padahal ia juga merupakan salah tokoh penggagas pendidikan. Oleh karena itu, buku yang hadir di tangan pembaca merupakan sebuah kajian kepustakaan terkait “pendidikan Islam perspektif KH.
