Wir alle haben schon vom Islam gehört, Muslime gesehen und wohl auch bereits mit ihnen zu tun gehabt. Aber kennen wir den Islam, jenseits der Menschen, denen wir begegnen? Was verlangt er von den Muslimen und den Nichtmuslimen, ja, auch den Nichtmuslimen? Was verlangt der Islam von Ihnen und mir, von uns? Sie haben Glück, ich werde Ihnen helfen, das System Islam zu verstehen, auf eine recht bequeme Art und Weise. - Sie müssen nur das Buch lesen und den Mut zur Wahrheit aufbringen. Ich sage Ihnen gleich: Das ist viel verlangt. Für aufklärungswillige Menschen aber eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Ich stelle Ihnen das Wesen des Islams anhand seiner "heiligen Texte" und seiner Geschichte kurz und prägnant vor, sachlich und zugleich unterhaltsam. Ich stelle Ihnen zur Diskussion, was ich aufgrund meines eigenen Wissensstandes zum Islam für wahr halte. Und darüber hinaus für sehr wahrscheinlich. Deshalb präsentiere ich "nur" Thesen, die aber wohlbegründet sind. Ich belasse es jedoch nicht dabei, denn der Islam ist eine Zumutung, eine Herausforderung für unsere aufgeklärte Moderne, die beantwortet werden muss. Ich präsentiere Ihnen deshalb 46 Lösungsansätze für unsere Gegenwehr. Sorgen wir für Aufklärung.

Ferner wird der medialen Durchschlagskraft des Begriffs »Flüchtlingskrise« besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, um ihn schließlich mit unterschiedlichen Abhängigkeits- und Interpretationsmodellen zu konfrontieren und Antwort auf die Frage zu suchen, wie sich die kulturellen Erscheinungsformen des Anderen und Fremden aus polnischer und deutscher Perspektive positioniert bzw. verändert haben. The formation of a new discourse was accompanied by a more or less conspicuous intention to assume a role of representatives of the Old Continent. Furthermore, one could observe attempts to substantively describe – yet not without an emotional overtone – the new social-political reality and its dynamic changes taking place under the influence of external impulses. This volume starts with a general outlook on the phenomenon of homeliness and otherness and the related cultural and historical contexts just to subsume the notions within a network of interrelations and interpretative models that are being outlined from a perspective of Poland and Germany with a specific focus to take the 'migration crisis' and its strength of impact into consideration.

Over the past decade, scholars have vigorously reconsidered the history of Orientalism, and though Edward Said's hugely influential work remains a touchstone of the discussion, Karla Mallette notes, it can no longer be taken as the final word on Western perceptions of the Islamic East. The French and British Orientalisms that Said studied in particular were shaped by the French and British colonial projects in Muslim regions; nations that did not have such investments in the Middle East generated significantly different perceptions of Islamic and Arabic culture. European Modernity and the Arab Mediterranean examines Orientalist philological scholarship of southern Europe produced between the mid-nineteenth and mid-twentieth century. In Italy, Spain, and Malta, Mallette argues, a regional history of Arab occupation during the Middle Ages gave scholars a focus different from that of their northern European colleagues; in studying the Arab world, they were not so much looking on a distant and radically different history as seeking to reconstruct the past of their own nations. She demonstrates that in specific instances, Orientalists wrote their nations' Arab history as the origin of modern national identity, depicting Islamic thought not as exterior to European modernity but rather as formative of and central to it. Joining comparative insights to the analytic strategies and historical genius of philology, Mallette ranges from the complex manuscript history of the Thousand and One Nights to the invention of the Maltese language and Spanish scholarship on Dante and Islam. Throughout, she reveals the profound influences Arab and Islamic traditions have had on the development of modern European culture. European Modernity and the Arab Mediterranean is an engaging study that sheds new light on the history of Orientalism, the future of philology, and the postcolonial Middle Ages.
