Die Formierung eines neuen Diskurses wurde unter den Vertretern des Alten Kontinents von Anfang an von einer sichtbaren Tendenz begleitet, die neue sozialpolitische Wirklichkeit auf eine möglichst sachliche – obwohl nicht emotionsfreie – Weise darzustellen, wobei die meinungsstiftende Wirkung externer Impulse sich nach wie vor als evident offenbart. Dieser Band geht von der Definition des Phänomens des Anderen und Fremden sowie von der Darstellung historischer und kultureller Kontexte aus. Ferner wird der medialen Durchschlagskraft des Begriffs »Flüchtlingskrise« besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, um ihn schließlich mit unterschiedlichen Abhängigkeits- und Interpretationsmodellen zu konfrontieren und Antwort auf die Frage zu suchen, wie sich die kulturellen Erscheinungsformen des Anderen und Fremden aus polnischer und deutscher Perspektive positioniert bzw. verändert haben. The 2015 immigration wave, including mostly migrants from the regions of Middle East and North Africa, was followed by a heated discussion among politicians, journalists, publicists, and representatives of the academic community. The formation of a new discourse was accompanied by a more or less conspicuous intention to assume a role of representatives of the Old Continent. Furthermore, one could observe attempts to substantively describe – yet not without an emotional overtone – the new social-political reality and its dynamic changes taking place under the influence of external impulses. This volume starts with a general outlook on the phenomenon of homeliness and otherness and the related cultural and historical contexts just to subsume the notions within a network of interrelations and interpretative models that are being outlined from a perspective of Poland and Germany with a specific focus to take the 'migration crisis' and its strength of impact into consideration.

Of the German Protestant missionaries in Tanzania, Lutheran or Moravian, none was as famous as Bruno Gutmann, who worked among the Chagga from 1902 – 1938, and only World War prevented him and his wife to live there for the rest of their lives (they had already prepared their burial place among the Chagga). When I did my research there in the early 1970s, I was told that he spoke the Chagga language better than any Chagga, and when reading the three big volumes about the boys’ initiation teaching (parallel in Chagga and German), I believed it. The Chagga honoured him as their Father (Wasahuye O Wachagga) in 1963, and 50 years later the memory is still strong. In Germany his missiological ideas with the value attached to the primal ties of family, neighbourhood and age- group were controversial. In 2016 the Lutheran Leipzig Mission honoured the 50 th anniversary of his death with an academic colloquium, the texts generated by it make up this volume.

While continually broadcasting the deaths of "illegal immigrants" who have drowned at sea, the majority of mass media incessantly feeds the panic over the "invasion" of Italy by poor immigrants from the Third World. This study is not merely an examination of the familiar limitations of the media, but an investigation of the comprehensive attitude in Italian society of rejecting foreigners who have been transformed into public enemies through a vicious cycle of panic and exclusion. Political dialogue has not proven very aware of the problem of acknowledging the civil rights of the new migrants. The recent cultural rediscovery of the "Italian nation" and the "Italian homeland" - that communal sentiment on which national belonging is based - is not separate from these recent disturbing developments. Not only does this appeal to the "Italian nation" prove weak, but it corresponds to a process of inferiorization of other societies: poorer nations, the underdeveloped regions of Italy itself, and the less wealthy areas in dominant regions. The political left and right both display this disturbing mentality. In this extensively documented, polemical book, Alessandro Dal Lago clearly takes a stand regarding the most profound impulses in Italian society. This study reveals that what is involved in the cultural discussion on migration are the most fundamental parameters and values upon which our democracy rests.

This volume is the result of a thorough exploration of contemporary conceptions of romantic love from different points of view. Beginning with an initial text where the meanings of romantic love are discussed theoretically and historically, the contributions gathered here present current discussions about love in the present day and in different geographical contexts that range from Hungary to Italy or Spain. The first part of the book is devoted to the analysis of mobilities for the sake of love as a result of globalization. These mobilities are analysed in relation to love ideals, to gender equality and to online searches for the ideal partners. The second part of the book deals with the exploration of different imaginaries of love in particular geographical contexts. The topics dealt with here include love as sickness, love and violence, love ideals for men engaged in gender equality and love ideals for those who engage in cross-dressing practices. In the third part, writing about and for love is addressed. Love writings to the beloved dead, teenage girls’ blogs and bestsellers such as Fifty Shades of Grey are discussed in particular detail. This book addresses current conceptions of romantic love in different social groups through different practices and in different countries, and shows that, despite the variability of discourses, experiences and practices related to love, a number of ideas of what love should be like – related to the Western ideals of romantic love – persist in all these contexts. The contributions to this volume are derived from extensive fieldwork and ethnographic research, and will be of undoubted interest for the academic milieu. However, given the topic it deals with, the book will also appeal to the general public, who will find in these pages many ‘love stories’ derived from the detailed study of the society which we inhabit and the ideals of love that we breathe.
