Public debt pressures due to the global economic crisis in several countries have impacted higher education, compelling governments to curtail the funding of higher education institutions (HEIs). Various instruments have been proposed as a platform for the private sector to channel funding to HEIs. This book introduces readers to the issues surrounding the financing of HEIs, especially public universities, which are dependent on government budgets. It discusses the sources of funding for HEIs, focusing on philanthropic instruments through endowment and waqf funds. Since both forms of income are obtained via contributions from third parties, such as alumni, individuals, business corporations etc., it is essential that they are managed in such a way to ensure their sustainability and that their benefits can be accessed without interruption. It explains the theory of successful endowment and waqf at HEIs, namely appropriate investment planning, superior investment committees, highly skilled investment managers, alumni networks, diversity of income sources and effective fundraising. These elements have been studied empirically in this book through case studies of several selected Malaysian public universities. The book considers policy implications and offers recommendations of strategies that Universities can adopt, such as the appointment of fund managers. No specific guidelines currently exist for appointing fund managers to enable universities to invest in assets such as bonds, equities, and property. Therefore, the book encourages universities to grow the endowment and waqf funds through proper investment strategies executed by professional fund managers. The book contributes new knowledge to scholars, students and researchers, as well as informing university administrators how to collect, manage and invest funds from endowment and waqf.

'Islamic Finance is a welcome critical contribution to the growing body of literature on Islamic economics, banking and finance. As one would expect from an eminent and respected scholar, Visser has provided the reader with much food for thought. This stimulating book raises some serious questions which need to be addressed and provides valuable source material for researchers and students of Islamic finance.'– Abul Hassan, The Muslim World Bank Review'Since its development, the study of Islamic finance has been enriched by the insights of Western scholars of banking and finance. Here, Hans Visser provides a comprehensive analysis of the principles of Islamic finance, the main instruments, and the operation of Islamic institutions and markets. This thoughtful and well written study confirms Professor Visser's place in the group of Western writers able to comprehend and evaluate the essence of Islamic finance, while reinforcing Edward Elgar's position as the leading Western publishing house in this field.'– Mervyn K. Lewis, University of South Australia and Academy of the Social Sciences in AustraliaHans Visser presents a fascinating study of both the foundations of Islamic finance and its recent developments. This highly topical book explores the products and practices of Islamic finance, specifically targeting the tensions that may arise between the ideology and the practices. The author describes the forms Islamic finance has taken, analyzes the problems that it faces, and confronts the practice of Islamic finance with the principles it is based upon. He presents a dispassionate discussion of the problems facing Islamic forms of finance, including the question of how to reconcile activities such as liquidity management, monetary policy and government finance with Islamic principles.Islamic finance is an especially momentous phenomenon, and this book will prove an essential read for students with an interest in money and banking, and particularly Islamic finance. Islamic finance is growing at an astonishing rate and is now a $1200 billion industry, with operations in over 100 countries. This book explains the paradox of a system rooted in the medieval era thriving in the global economy. Coverage is exhaustively comprehensive, defining Islamic finance in its broadest sense to include banks, mutual funds, securities firms and insurance (or takaful) companies. The author places Islamic finance in the context of the global political and economic system and covers a wide variety of issues such as the underlying principles of Islamic finance, the range of Islamic financial products, and country differences. He also discusses a number of economic, political, regulatory and religious concerns and challenges. This second edition has been completely revised and updated to take into account the great changes and developments in the field in recent times. It includes the impact of the 9/11 and 7/7 terrorist attacks on the industry, the new forms of interaction with Western financial institutions, the emergence of innovative products such as sukuk, attempts by a broad range of financial centres - including Kuala Lumpur, London, Singapore, Bahrain and Dubai - to become global hubs of Islamic finance, and the repercussions of the 2008 global financial meltdown on Islamic institutions.

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, , language: English, abstract: The current rapid growth rate of Islamic banking in the world market has made the banking approach a significant contributor to economic growth. However, few studies have been done to determine the extent to which conventional banks can survive in an Islamic banking environment. The purpose of this study was to assess the financial performance of financial institutions and relate it to their involvement in Islamic banking. The study took an explorative and a quantitative approach, whereby literature was acquired from online sources for use in assessing the current state of knowledge, and financial performance data for Citigroup, Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs were acquired from Bloomberg BusinessWeek. The literature was reviewed in the literature review section while financial performance records were assessed using Microsoft Excel 2011 software package. The study findings determined that conventional banks have varying degrees of success in their Islamic banking ventures, whereby high levels of fluctuations characterize the institutions’ financial records. According to the exponential growth of Goldman Sachs in 2012 upon the issuance of sukuks, it is relatively easy for conventional banks to achieve growth through offering of Islamic banking products. However, according to the study findings, Islamic banking is not suitable for banks that want to achieve consistency in exponential growth, but is highly relevant for institutions that want to remain stable in their financial performance despite changes in market conditions.

Methods and techniques adopted in teaching, training, learning, research, professional development, or capacity building are generally standardized across most traditional disciplines, particularly within developing countries. This is not the case, however, when it comes to the Islamic disciplines, and, in particular, in relation to the study of Islamic economics and finance, which is influenced by conventional standards and techniques. This is primarily due to the lack of availability of the requisite standards and mechanisms designed within the spirit of Maqsid al-Shari’ah. This book offers a unique resource and a comprehensive overview of the contemporary methods and smart techniques available for teaching, learning, and researching Islamic eco-finance, and it presents solutions to the challenges in implementing them. Further, the book gives deep insight into the most appropriate methodologies that could be employed empirically to explore, model, analyze, and evaluate Islamic finance theories and models, respectively. It also gives recommendations for improving learning, teaching, and research outcomes in Islamic eco-finance. The book also addresses how, in this advanced technological era, smart tools like artificial intelligence, machine learning, big data, Zoom, and the internet of things can be adapted to help equip students, researchers, and scholars with smart skills. The book will enable those studying Islamic economics and finance to grasp the appropriate tools for research and learning. Additionally, the Islamic economics and finance sector is growing at a significant rate and therefore requires the upskilling and capacity building of its human resources; thus, the book will also be highly beneficial for practitioners involved in the industry.

The Stability Of Islamic Finance written by Hossein Askari and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-09 with Business & Economics categories.

The Stability of Islamic Finance main focus is on the question of the sources of financial instability which seems inherent in the conventional system. As a core component of this focus, the book will consider episodes of turbulence and instability in a historical context recalling the occurrence of such events from mid-19th century to the present. It will present various theoretical explanations along with solutions and alternative financial systems that avoid instability provided by various scholars dating back to mid-19th century to present. The book then will present and discuss the architecture of an Islamic financial system and show that at its core, this system shares many characteristics of an stable financial system proposed by Western scholars throughout history to avoid the inherent instability of the present dominant system. Particular emphasis will be placed on the present financial crisis and its causes as well the financial crisis of the 1997 in Southeast Asia, Russia, and Latin America relating these episodes to the fundamental features of the dominant system. The debt crisis of the low income countries will also be part of this discussion. It will then argue that these crises could be mitigated under an Islamic system or any other system with similar architecture.
