He is preparing to venture inland and wage war against the Continent’s native population. Hunder, now Chief in name only, doesn't have the courage to stop him. Suddenly, Wick returns from the sea with an urgent message: Sola, the cursed girl who was lost at sea, may still be alive! The citizens of the Marshall Islands have been told that climate change will doom their country, and they have seen confirmatory omens in the land, air, and sea. This book investigates how grassroots Marshallese society has interpreted and responded to this threat as intimated by local observation, science communication, and Biblical exegesis. With grounds to dismiss or ignore the threat, Marshall Islanders have instead embraced it; with reasons to forswear guilt and responsibility, they have instead adopted in-group blame; and having been instructed that resettlement is necessary, they have vowed instead to retain the homeland. These dominant local responses can be understood as arising from a pre-existing, vigorous constellation of Marshallese ideas termed "modernity the trickster": a historically inspired narrative of self-inflicted cultural decline and seduction by Euro-American modernity. This study illuminates islander agency at the intersection of the local and the global, and suggests a theory of risk perception based on ideological commitment to narratives of historical progress and decline.

Vanuatu. Marshall Islands. Fiji. The names evoke white-sand beaches, swaying palms and lazy holidays. But in reality these idyllic places are tropical maelstroms of global realpolitik, caught between the world's superpowers, former colonial masters, and the struggle for independence and cultural survival. Even more importantly, these nations are at the frontline of climate change, as rising sea levels, salinity, cyclones and pollution put their very existence at stake. Based on his extensive travels in the Pacific, Tom Bamforth shows us the people of the islands, their cultures and their lives. From uprisings in New Caledonia to tsunamis in Tonga, this is a book about interaction, race, colonisation, climate change, nuclear testing, resistance, cultural preservation, urban life, the tastiness of well-roasted pig and the pleasures of canoeing at dusk. With humour and insight, Tom Bamforth presents both an insider's and an outsider's view of contemporary life in the Pacific. Rendered in vivid detail and colour, The Rising Tide masterfully weaves together the stories of Pacific peoples and politics at the forefront of global change.

Set sail with Island Book: The Infinite Land, the second volume in an Evan Dahm's epic fantasy graphic novel trilogy rich with allegory and underlying themes. After their quest to find the Monster, Sola and her friends have gone down separate paths. Sola spends her days on the open seas while Hunder stays close to home as the chief of the unified Sun and Fortress Islands. And Wick? Well . . . it’s almost as if he’s become a ghost. Then their world is thrown into chaos when Alef, the captain of one of Hunder’s ships, brings news of a massive island—a continent—that he says the Sun and Fortress islanders are destined to claim for their own. Alef and Hunder launch an expedition that threatens to bring death and destruction to any who stand in their way. Sola must make a choice—step aside and allow other islanders to die, or risk her own life in order to stop her friend.

The story is essentially Rod Sterling’s and is told mainly from his point of view. It sees him caught up in a web of historical events that first occurs during World War II, when he is a lad of thirteen, and continues as he becomes involved in Fidel Castro’s struggle for power in Cuba. The story is also of Conchita Quesada, the headstrong, young and winsome black-eyed Latin beauty. She sets a fire in Rod’s blood that would not be quenched. Their life together is filled with violence, danger, romance, adventure, mystery, and political intrigue. The book is appealing, in part, because it reads like the current events of the era in which the novel takes place. Rising Tide will leave the reader acutely aware of the menace that communism presented in the Caribbean Basin and Central America.

A hurricane isn’t the only trouble looming as a family assembles for a will reading in this sequel to Iron Lace by a USA Today–bestselling author. Nine people have gathered for the reading of Aurore Gerritsen’s will. Some are family, others are strangers. But all will have their futures changed forever when a lifetime of secrets is finally revealed. Aurore Gerritsen left clear instructions: her will is to be read over a four-day period at her summer cottage on a small Louisiana island. Those who don’t stay will forfeit their inheritance. With the vast fortune of Gulf Coast Shipping at stake, no one will take that risk. Tensions rise as Aurore’s lawyer dispenses small bequests, each designed to expose the matriarch’s well-kept secrets. Longtime loyalties are jeopardized, and shocking new alliances are formed as the family feels the sands of belief shifting beneath their feet. As a hurricane approaches and survival itself is threatened, the fourth day dawns and everyone waits for the final truth to be revealed. Praise for Rising Tides “Richards’s ability to portray compelling characters who grapple with challenging family issues is laudable.” —Publishers Weekly “This novel features a multilayered plot, vivid descriptions, and a keen sense of time and place.” —Library Journal
