Enterococcus spp. are part of the normal intestinal flora of humans and animals. Due to their abundance in feces of warm-blooded animals and their long survival in the environment, they have been traditionally used as indicators of fecal contamination in the aquatic environment. Water consists of variable bacteria and nutrients. This makes it's a main environmental source for bacteria to spread. The problem of increasing resistance of enterococci to antibiotics, particularly vancomycin, has been detected. They have emerged as a major nosocomial pathogens, thus representing an increasingly important problem for public health. The purpose of this study is to characterize Enterococcus spp. by examining their resistence to selected antibiotics and the used of molecular typing methods, including plasmid profiling and Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus Polymerase Chain Reaction (ERIC-PCR) fingerprinting. Water samples were collected from various locations in Malaysia and Enterococcus spp. was isolated using chromogenic enterococci selective medium (Chromocult® enterococci agar) developed by Merck, Germany. A total of 72 enterococci were isolated from lake water, river water, pond water and sea water using Membrane Filtration method. Isolates are then subjected to ERIC-PCR, plasmid profiling and antimicrobial susceptibility test. Characterization of enterococci into different clusters using ERIC-PCR revealed the high polymorphism of enterococci isolated from different water samples. From this study, ERIC-PCR produces 22 clusters and 12 single isolates at 56% similarity level. In the plasmid profiling test, only 17 out of the 72 isolates (23.6%) showed presence of plasmid. The remaining isolates are plasmidless. Subsequently antimicrobial resistence was performed using disc diffusion method with a selection of 5 antimicrobial agents. A total of 14 profiles were generated. Antibiograms showed that none of the isolates were resistant to vancomycin, and only 18.1% of the isolates showed intermediate sensitivity to vancomycin. 36.1% of the isolates were resistant to both tetracycline and erythromycin. Resistance was also observed to penicillin (9.7%). The least resistance of Enterococcus spp. isolates was to chloramphenicol, which is only 4.2%.. As a conclusion, ERIC-PCR provide valueable information on the epidemiolody and surveillance of Enterococcus spp. This study indicated that resistancy to vancomycin in Enterococcus spp. isolated from water in Malaysia is still uncommon. Further investigations need to be conducted to determine if Enterococcus spp. isolates from water where gaining resistance towards vancomycin.

Antibiotic resistance has become a worldwide health issue, globally recognized as the first priority by WHO. Many forms of resistance can spread with remarkable speed and cross international boundaries. World health leaders are devoting efforts to the problem by planning strategies for monitoring the effectiveness of public health interventions and detecting new trends and threats. This volume focuses on the problem from different perspectives, taking into consideration geographical dissemination (soil and water), human medicine (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and veterinary (Enterococcus spp.) impact and molecular analysis. The purpose of this volume is to provide a useful tool for control and prevention and to discuss useful epidemiological data concerning ways of obtaining an accurate picture of resistance in different communities.

Contaminated ponds can become reservoirs of antibiotic-resistant strains of faecal bacteria including enterococci which are capable of contributing to the spread of antimicrobial resistance into the marine environment. As such, this book aimed to characterize the antimicrobial resistance profile of Enterococcus species from fish ponds in Benin City, Edo State. A total of 376 water samples were obtained from four different fish ponds between February and July, 2015 and were investigated for the presence of Enterococcus species using standard bacteriological methods. The antimicrobial susceptibility profile of the isolates were determined by adopting the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. From the 376 water samples analysed for the presence of enterococci isolates, 100 isolates each from Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium were isolated from the four fish ponds investigated. The mean enterococal counts from the four fish ponds investigated ranged from 4±0.01 × 102 to 12±0.17 × 102 CFU/ml. Statistical analysis reveals that there was a significant difference observed in the mean enterococcal counts obtained from the four different fish ponds in the study (p p r = 0.876) of the multidrug resistant profile on the number of isolates studied was observed (p > 0.05). Adherence to adequate and proper use of manure products and frequent discharge of water from fish pond will reduce the high level of antimicrobial resistance in Enterococcus species isolated from fish ponds and also reduce the potential risk to human health.

Molecular Typing in Bacterial Infections covers common bacterial pathogenic agents, with the most effective methods for their identification and classification in the light of their specific epidemiology. The book will be a valuable resource for molecular typing of infectious diseases agents encountered in both the research and hospital clinical lab settings, as well as culture collections. Each chapter provides an overview of molecular approaches to typing bacterial pathogens. Part I gives a general overview of typing methods used in the traditional microbiology laboratory in comparison to molecular methods of epidemiology. In Part II, the relative strengths and weaknesses of the different methods applicable to the specific agents of infectious diseases are emphasized. Specific emphasis is placed on recent changes and updates in molecular typing.

Lactic Acid Bacteria Biodiversity and Taxonomy Lactic Acid Bacteria Biodiversity and Taxonomy Edited by Wilhelm H. Holzapfel and Brian J.B. Wood The lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are a group of related microorganisms that are enormously important in the food and beverage industries. Generally regarded as safe for human consumption (and, in the case of probiotics, positively beneficial to human health), the LAB have been used for centuries, and continue to be used worldwide on an industrial scale, in food fermentation processes, including yoghurt, cheeses, fermented meats and vegetables, where they ferment carbohydrates in the foods, producing lactic acid and creating an environment unsuitable for the survival of food spoilage organisms and pathogens. The shelf life of the product is thereby extended, but of course these foods are also enjoyed around the world for their organoleptic qualities. They are also important to the brewing and winemaking industries, where they are often undesirable intruders but can in specific cases have desirable benefits. The LAB are also used in producing silage and other agricultural animal feeds. Clinically, they can improve the digestive health of young animals, and also have human medical applications. This book provides a much-needed and comprehensive account of the current knowledge of the LAB, covering the taxonomy and relevant biochemistry, physiology and molecular biology of these scientifically and commercially important microorganisms. It is directed to bringing together the current understanding concerning the organisms’ remarkable diversity within a seemingly rather constrained compass. The genera now identified as proper members of the LAB are treated in dedicated chapters, and the species properly recognized as members of each genus are listed with detailed descriptions of their principal characteristics. Each genus and species is described using a standardized format, and the relative importance of each species in food, agricultural and medical applications is assessed. In addition, certain other bacterial groups (such as Bifidobacterium) often associated with the LAB are given in-depth coverage. The book will also contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of the role of LA B in the various ecosystems and ecological niches that they occupy. In summary, this volume gathers together information designed to enable the organisms’ fullest industrial, nutritional and medical applications. Lactic Acid Bacteria: Biodiversity and Taxonomy is an essential reference for research scientists, biochemists and microbiologists working in the food and fermentation industries and in research institutions. Advanced students of food science and technology will also find it an indispensable guide to the subject. Health And Safety Aspects Of Food Processing Technologies written by Abdul Malik and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-31 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Food processing is expected to affect content, activity and bioavailability of nutrients; the health-promoting capacity of food products depends on their processing history. Traditional technologies, such as the use of antimicrobials and thermal processing, are efficient in increasing nutritional value to an extent, though they may not be effective at addressing food safety, particularly when it comes to maintaining the food's molecular structure. Modern food processing plants improve the quality of life for people with allergies, diabetics, and others who cannot consume some common food elements. Food processing can also add extra nutrients, such as vitamins. Processed foods are often less susceptible to early spoilage than fresh foods and are better suited for long-distance transportation from the source to the consumer. However, food processing can also decrease the nutritional value of foods and introduce hazards not encountered with naturally occurring products. Processed foods often include food additives, such as flavourings and texture-enhancing agents, which may have little or no nutritive value, and may in fact be unhealthy. This book deals with the subject of food processing in a unique way, providing an overview not only of current techniques in food processing and preservation (i.e., dairy, meat, cereal, vegetables, fruits and juice processing, etc.) but also the health and safety aspects: food technologies that improve nutritional quality of foods, functional foods, and nanotechnology in the food and agriculture industry. The text also looks into the future by defining current bottlenecks and future research goals. This work will serve as a ready reference for the subject matter to students and researchers alike.
