The first book to offer practical guidelines on the prudent andrational use of antimicrobials in animals. Drawing onmultidisciplinary expertise to offer independent scientific adviceon a controversial area that is crucial to both human health andanimal welfare. The earlier general chapters cover issues such ashuman health risks and the problems of resistance to antimicrobialdrugs. The later specific chapters are dedicated to particulargroups of animals. Has an emphasis on preserving the efficacy of antimicrobialdrugs that are clinically important in human medicine Covers both companion animals and food animals, includingaquaculture Suitable for veterinary practitioners working in small andlarge animal medicine, aquaculture and animal production, as wellas veterinary students, academics and researchers. Globalization of the food supply has created conditions favorable for the emergence, reemergence, and spread of food-borne pathogens-compounding the challenge of anticipating, detecting, and effectively responding to food-borne threats to health. In the United States, food-borne agents affect 1 out of 6 individuals and cause approximately 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3,000 deaths each year. This figure likely represents just the tip of the iceberg, because it fails to account for the broad array of food-borne illnesses or for their wide-ranging repercussions for consumers, government, and the food industry-both domestically and internationally. A One Health approach to food safety may hold the promise of harnessing and integrating the expertise and resources from across the spectrum of multiple health domains including the human and veterinary medical and plant pathology communities with those of the wildlife and aquatic health and ecology communities. The IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted a public workshop on December 13 and 14, 2011 that examined issues critical to the protection of the nation's food supply. The workshop explored existing knowledge and unanswered questions on the nature and extent of food-borne threats to health. Participants discussed the globalization of the U.S. food supply and the burden of illness associated with foodborne threats to health; considered the spectrum of food-borne threats as well as illustrative case studies; reviewed existing research, policies, and practices to prevent and mitigate foodborne threats; and, identified opportunities to reduce future threats to the nation's food supply through the use of a "One Health" approach to food safety. Improving Food Safety Through a One Health Approach: Workshop Summary covers the events of the workshop and explains the recommendations for future related workshops.

This second volume of the two-volumes work “Antimicrobials in Livestock” offers an in-depth look at the antimicrobials commonly used in veterinary medical care of the major food producing animals pigs, poultry and cattle as well as horses, bringing to readers’ attention also pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of these drugs. The individual chapters also provide a brief description of preventive tools as well as alternatives to conventional treatment options that could help minimise the use of antibiotics and combat the problems caused by increasing antimicrobial resistance. The focus is on Europe, without neglecting the global context. The complete two-volumes provide an extensive review of various aspects related to the use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine. Volume I explores the use of antimicrobials in animals from the regulatory, practical as well scientific perspective and is targeted on EU policies and regulatory surroundings, providing also information on risks linked to the extensive use of antibiotics in livestock and highlighting importance of methods of laboratory testing for susceptibility and resistance, starting from phenotype tests and moving towards genetic analysis results providing molecular biology aspects. Each chapter confronts the reader with open questions to stimulate further discussions and future research on the topics covered. Volume II more specifically discusses medical aspects necessary for targeted, responsible, and evidence-based use of antimicrobials in cattle, pigs, poultry, and horses, as well as pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics as two of the most important factors necessary for proper dosing schedule setting of effective treatment. While the preface of the first volume started with questions, Volume II’s preface ends with them, having the intention to provoke more in depth and innovative thinking and might be the start of a new era, which is needed to keep antimicrobials working and available for the future generations both in human and veterinary medicine.

In the pursuit of tackling the menace of antimicrobial resistance, egressed this groovy compilation contributed by eminent scientists, medical fraternity, agriculturists, environmentalists, microbiologists, pharmacologists, computational biologists, stakeholders, policy makers and industrialists in this field. As the drivers of antimicrobial resistance are multifarious, the volume illustrates the prevalence of resistance among microbes of human and animal origin, various perspectives in the resistance flux with modern agricultural practices, distribution of resistance genes in the environment, challenges in pharmacodynamic studies, pro-drug delivery systems, computational simulation approaches in drug development against resistant microbial pathogens and regulatory aspects of antimicrobial resistance. The book gives a better understanding to analyse the present scenario of antimicrobial resistance, interpret the trends and identify the strategies to prevent or control the menace. It will be a source of inspiration to the leading drug developers and can also serve as a vehicle for elucidation of national policy guidelines.

"Over 257,000 cultures from over 7,500 veterinary clinics from throughout North America contributed to the data in this edition. Variation in probable organisms cultured from any given body site is small and fairly predictable at some sites. Susceptibility data’s variability is associated more with the type of practice (Referral vs. General); however, in the confines of interpretive classes used (Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor), the variability is seldom more than one class difference. The 5th Edition continues with what was started in the prior edition in using sensitivity data from General or Mixed Referral only clinics and the same caveat goes to referral hospitals that TARGET will not adequately predict your practice’s patients. As always, probability data cannot replace a Culture and Sensitivity report from your own patient; however, it can help you achieve a rational and more accurate starting point for choosing empirical therapy while awaiting test results."--Information webpage.
