Japan's China Policy understands Japan's foreign policy in terms of power - one of the most central concepts of political analysis. It contributes a fresh understanding to the subject by developing relational power as an analytical framework and by applying it to significant issues in Japan's China policy: the negotiations for a bilateral investment protection treaty and the disputed Pinnacle (Senkaku/Diaoyu) Islands. Hagström demonstrates that Japan exerted power over China in such divergent empirical settings for the most part by using civilian instruments positively, defensively and through non-action. Given that Japan's foreign policy is often portrayed rather enigmatically in terms of power, the unique contribution of Japan's China Policy is to demonstrate how to analyze power aspects of Japan's foreign policy in a more coherent fashion. This revealing approach to Japan's foreign policy will be of huge interest to anyone studying Japanese politics, foreign policy or international relations.

China and Japan are the two most important countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Their economic ties are significant not only because they are the second and third largest economies in today's world, but also because their economic relationship has an important impact on regional economic co-operation and international production chains. China's Japan Policy: Adjusting to New Challenges analyzes the significance of Japan in China's foreign policy framework within the broader context of China's world view, its national objectives, and the Chinese leadership's policy adjustments in response to the changing international and domestic circumstances. It looks at China's Japan policy in recent decades since their normalization of relations in 1972. The book also examines the unique characteristics of the China–Japan bilateral relationship, especially the historical legacy, territorial disputes, and the special cultural affinities between the two nations. Readers interested in China and Japan will find this an invaluable reference with detailed insights on international relations and economic developments in the Asia-Pacific region. This work is a comprehensive analysis of the political and strategic relationship between Japan and China, each of which in important respects aspires to a global status commensurate with its economic and military might. These two great powers have to come to terms with a history of antagonism, each viewing the other as circumspectly as their small regional neighbors view them. Japan and Greater China reviews the domestic and international foundations of the foreign policies of the two countries, notably the politics of national identity. The strategic and economic underpinnings of the relationship are assessed not exclusively by reference to bilateral concerns but within the global and regional position and interests of the two powers.

Written by leading experts, Public Administration in East Asia: Mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan examines the inner workings of governments in East Asia, in particular its public administration and related public policy processes. It focuses on the apparatus of government — the agencies, their values, context, and policies within which they operate. Organized in parallel sections, the book covers the history, public policy processes, organization, HRM, ethics, corruption, intergovernmental relations, performance management, and e-government. It discusses each of these topics separately for Mainland China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, providing an unusual and important comparative perspective. The book includes essential knowledge and facts, discussions of emerging issues, and useful resources for further reading. It addresses questions such as: What is the history of public administration in East Asia? How are decisions made? What is the role of Confucianism in shaping public administration? How does the developmental path affect public administration? Why is performance management emphasized? What is the state of citizen participation? How are ethical underpinnings of the civil service different from the West? Why are intergovernmental relations an essential issue in East Asia? What are the politics behind world-class achievements in IT? What is the nature of civil service reform? What is the nature of efforts to combat government corruption? You can find many books on trade policy and politics that sometimes give good insight into the operation of government agencies. You can also find a few edited books that contain single chapters on countries in the Asia-Pacific region. What is missing, however, is a single resource that provides an overview with depth on matters solely about public administration. This state-of-the-art resource brings together the fragments of existing knowledge on East Asian economies, filling the need for a comprehensive compendium that showcases the public administration practices in the region and East Asia’s innovative approaches to governance and its many challenges.

Japan S Relations With China written by Peng Er Lam and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-04-18 with Political Science categories.

The essays in this collection examine Sino-Japanese political relations given the phenomenon of ‘a rising China and a stagnating Japan’. Questioning whether their relationship is one of cooperation or conflict, the book reviews China and Japan’s bilateral ties to see whether they have deepened and broadened despite differences in outlook, national interest and political systems. Adding a new perspective to the Sino-Japanese political relations discussion, the book looks beyond the interactions of central governments to examine the role of NGOs, local governments and sub-regional linkages. The contributors adopt a range of analytical approaches and explore case studies including the Taiwan issue, Japanese Official Development Policy towards China and joint fishery management in the East China Sea. With perspectives from the US, Russia and Malaysia, the book yields new insights into this complex and multifaceted relationship and is a welcome addition to the current literature.
