Eminent economists and development experts focus on a number of concerns that are currently the major preoccupation of development economists, policymakers, and practitioners. The issues addressed in this collection center on strategies to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality, and deal effectively with problems of management and the utilization of land and water resources. The contributors analyze the issues in the context of past experience, the present international setting, and possible alternative strategies for the future, and consider, as well, theoretical and methodological concerns.

Reliable information on how health service strategies affect the poor is in short supply. In an attempt to redress the imbalance, 'Improving Health Service Delivery in Developing Countries' presents evidence on strategies for strengthening health service delivery, based on systematic reviews of the literature, quantitative and qualitative analyses of existing data, and seven country case studies. The authors also explore how changes in coverage of different health services affect each other on the national level. Finally, the authors explain why setting international targets for health services has been not been successful and offer an alternative approach based on a specific country's experience. The book's findings are clear and hopeful: There are many ways to improve health services. Measuring change and using information to guide decisions and inform stakeholders are critically important for successful implementation. Asking difficult questions, using information intelligently, and involving key stakeholders and institutions are central to the "learning and doing" practices that underlie successful health service delivery.

Rich Country Interests And Third World Development written by Robert Cassen and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-01 with Political Science categories.

First published in 1982, Rich Country Interests and Third World Development adds breadth and specificity to the exploration of the interests in Third World development of eleven “rich” countries—the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and France. The authors analyze a spectrum of Northern economic, political, and security interests in development in the South. They also examine how national experiences, political traditions, humanistic values, and changing attitudes have influenced perceptions of and relationships with Third World countries over three decades of dramatic change in the North-South environment. This book helps lay a foundation for negotiated solutions to North-South issues by offering a greater appreciation of differences as well as commonalities in interests both among and within industrial and developing countries. An overview chapter points to issues broader than those raised in the country studies and addresses a critical question: On what terms is it in the interests of the North and South to pursue and fashion interdependence between them in the 1980s?

Is there a tradeoff between raising growth and reducing inequality and poverty? This paper reviews the theoretical and empirical literature on the complex links between growth, inequality, and poverty, with causation going in both directions. The evidence suggests that growth can be effective in reducing poverty, but its impact on inequality is ambiguous and depends on the underlying sources of growth. The impact of poverty and inequality on growth is likewise ambiguous, as several channels mediate the relationship. But most plausible mechanisms suggest that poverty and inequality reduce growth, at least in the long run. Policies play a role in shaping these relationships and those designed to improve equality of opportunity can simultaneously improve inclusiveness and growth.

This book examines the political and developmental implications of the new information and communication technologies (NICT) in the Third World. Whereas the concept of the 'digital divide' tends to focus on technological and quantitative indicators, this work stresses the crucial role played by the political regime type, the pursued development model and the specific configuration of actors and decision-making dynamics. Two starkly contrasting Third World countries, state-socialist Cuba and the Latin America's ""show-case democracy"" Costa Rica, were chosen for two in-depth empirical country s.

For all societies, the common denominator of gender is female subordination. For women of the Third World the effects of this position are worsened by economic crisis, the legacy of colonialism, as well as patriarchal attitudes and economic crises. Feminist critique has introduced the gender factor to development theory, arguing that the equal distribution of the benefits of economic development can only be achieved through a radical restructuring of the process of development. This important new book reviews both policy and practice in Latin America, Africa and Asia and raises thought-provoking questions concerning the role of development planning and the empowerment of women.
