Drawing on the culture’s history before and after the birth of rap music, this book argues that the values attributed to Hip Hop by ‘postmodern’ scholars stand in stark contrast with those that not only implicitly guided its aesthetic elements, but are explicitly voiced by Hip Hop’s pioneers and rap music’s most consequential artists. It argues that the structural evacuation of the voices of its founders and organic intellectuals in the postmodern theorization of Hip Hop has foreclosed the culture’s ethical values and political goals from scholarly view, undermining its unity and progress. Through a historically informed critique of the hegemonic theoretical framework in Hip Hop Studies, and a re-centering of the culture’s fundamental proscription against ‘biting,' this book articulates and defends the aesthetic and ethical values of Hip Hop against their concealment and subversion by an academic discourse that merely ‘samples’ the culture for its own reactionary ends.

What influenced the journey to The Doors... were my experiences at various churches over the years. Me being a confused Christian having been trapped by religion. Having been beaten into submitting to man's will, not that of God. Fortunately enough, I was not raised in a religious household. In hindsight, I believe that as a youth, I may have enjoyed too much freedom. Because of such libertarian rearing or lack thereof, depending upon view, worshipping authoritative figures has never been a priority on my list. I have always been rebellious in that aspect. Keeping in mind, I believe in giving respect where it is due, in the same token, I am also a firm believer that God is no respecter of persons not withstanding, there is a time and place for everything. Even Jesus encouraged people to render to Caesar what was his. Give respect and honor where it is indeed due. There is a way to come before kings as God is a God of order. As there is God-ordained authority and leadership where in fact we must submit in many instances, We must bear in mind, dominion and authority are not given exclusively to "men" as in the sex, per se. Often times where we see "man" or "men" in biblical text, it means the whole of humanity. Not just males. Not just leadership. We all have something to bring to the table. As equally, we are all very flawed creatures who ourselves need to submit to the leadership of God's Holy Spirit.

It's hard to say, exactly, what's meant by the modern world, but Henry Buckberry never really hooked into it. Born before the First World War and the oldest boy in a family of thirteen kids, he left the open, rolling, potholed prairie of North Dakota in 1921 for the dark, dense, dangerous woods of northern Wisconsin, where he learned to fish, trap, hunt, lumberjack, and farm. Although he lived into the twenty-first century (the second volume of these stories, A Windfall Homestead, will inch us closer to the information super-highway), it could be said that Henry played hooky from the twentieth. With a few allowances for a little new technology, like the Model T, Henry's life represents the end phase of a rural folk culture that has its roots in the Neolithic. Through Henry's stories it's possible to see a long way into the past and then to turn the telescope around in order to put the present under an improvised microscope. Henry didn't have an easy life, but he had a vivid life, a life amazingly free of boredom, aimlessness, or distraction, and his stories convey that vividness from beginning to end. Henry's son Charles Darwin Buckberry--also known as C.D. or Seedy Buckberry--interviewed Henry and arranged the stories in some sort of more or less working order.
