Sampling Biting And The Postmodern Subversion Of Hip Hop written by Jim Vernon and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-21 with Philosophy categories.
Drawing on the culture’s history before and after the birth of rap music, this book argues that the values attributed to Hip Hop by ‘postmodern’ scholars stand in stark contrast with those that not only implicitly guided its aesthetic elements, but are explicitly voiced by Hip Hop’s pioneers and rap music’s most consequential artists. It argues that the structural evacuation of the voices of its founders and organic intellectuals in the postmodern theorization of Hip Hop has foreclosed the culture’s ethical values and political goals from scholarly view, undermining its unity and progress. Through a historically informed critique of the hegemonic theoretical framework in Hip Hop Studies, and a re-centering of the culture’s fundamental proscription against ‘biting,' this book articulates and defends the aesthetic and ethical values of Hip Hop against their concealment and subversion by an academic discourse that merely ‘samples’ the culture for its own reactionary ends.

American Rap Scenes examines the history and legacy of rap music in 25 American cities through factors of geography, migration, movements, music, and technology. Providing area-centered analysis of a culture many see as monolithic, Lavar Pope highlights the unique histories of rap music and Hip Hop culture - how and why these scenes developed - in 25 mid-size and major cities across the country. More so than other genres of music, rap offers historical record of a multigenerational Black music that is region- and locale- specific and opens a window into the Black experience in America. Highlighting global stars and key local artists alike, American Rap Scenes features artists contextualized within their city of origin from Andre 3000 (Atlanta), Kendrick Lamar (Compton), and Common (Chicago) to Too Short (Oakland), Freddie Gibbs (Gary), and Akon (Jersey City). The 25 scenes covered in this book are South Bronx, Manhattan and Harlem, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Hempstead, Philadelphia, Newark and Jersey City, Boston, Los Angeles and Compton, Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and Portland, Chicago and Gary, Indiana, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Detroit, Houston, New Orleans, Memphis, Atlanta, Miami, Hampton, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Honolulu, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Saint Thomas, USVI. These scenes have been chosen for the documented and longstanding histories of their local music-making communities as well as similarities in the evolution of the local environment and geography, the proximity and timeline of Black, Latinx, and Caribbean migrations, and the impact of the Civil Rights, Racial Justice, and Women's Movements.

Music Borrowing And Copyright Law written by Enrico Bonadio and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-19 with Law categories.
This ground-breaking book examines the multifaceted dynamics between copyright law and music borrowing within a rich diversity of music genres from across the world. It evaluates how copyright laws under different generic conventions may influence, or are influenced by, time-honoured creative borrowing practices. Leading experts from around the world scrutinise a carefully selected range of musical genres, including pop, hip-hop, jazz, blues, electronic and dance music, as well as a diversity of region-specific genres, such as Jamaican music, River Plate Tango, Irish folk music, Hungarian folk music, Flamenco, Indian traditional music, Australian indigenous music, Maori music and many others. This genre-conscious analysis builds on a theoretical section in which musicologists and lawyers offer their insights into fundamental issues concerning music genre categorisation, the typology of music borrowing and copyright law's ontological struggle with musical borrowing in theory and practice. The chapters are threaded together by a central theme, ie, that the cumulative nature of music creativity is the result of collective bargaining processes among many 'musicking' parties that have socially constructed creative music authorship under a rich mix of generic conventions.

Hip Hop As Philosophical Text And Testimony written by Lissa Skitolsky and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-16 with Philosophy categories.
Hip-hop as survivor testimony? Rhymes as critical text? Drawing on her own experiences as a lifelong hip-hop head and philosophy professor, Lissa Skitolsky reveals the existential power of hip-hop to affect our sensibility and understanding of race and anti-black racism. Hip-Hop as Philosophical Text and Testimony: Can I Get a Witness? examines how the exclusion of hip-hop from academic discourse around knowledge, racism, white supremacy, genocide, white nationalism, and trauma reflects the very neoliberal sensibility that hip-hop exposes and opposes. At this critical moment in history, in the midst of a long overdue global reckoning with systemic anti-black racism, Skitolsky shows how it is more important than ever for white people to realize that our failure to see this system—and take hip-hop seriously—has been essential to its reproduction. In this book, she illustrates the unique power of underground hip-hop to interrupt our neoliberal and post-racial sensibility of current events.

Posthuman Rap written by Justin Adams Burton and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Music categories.
Posthuman Rap listens for the ways contemporary rap maps an existence outside the traditional boundaries of what it means to be human. Contemporary humanity is shaped in neoliberal terms, where being human means being viable in a capitalist marketplace that favors whiteness, masculinity, heterosexuality, and fixed gender identities. But musicians from Nicki Minaj to Future to Rae Sremmurd deploy queerness and sonic blackness as they imagine different ways of being human. Building on the work of Sylvia Wynter, Alexander Weheliye, Lester Spence, LH Stallings, and a broad swath of queer and critical race theory, Posthuman Rap turns an ear especially toward hip hop that is often read as apolitical in order to hear its posthuman possibilities, its construction of a humanity that is blacker, queerer, more feminine than the norm.
