Learn how to develop solutions to handle disasters both large and small. Real-world scenarios illustrate the importance of disaster response (DR) planning. IT Disaster Response takes a different approach to IT disaster response plans. Rather than focusing on details such as what hardware you should buy or what software you need to have in place, the book focuses on the management of a disaster and various management and communication tools you can use before and during a disaster. This book examines disasters in general—a compilation of lessons the author learned over the course of years working in IT, reviewing plane crashes, and his experiences as a cave rescuer and cave rescue instructor. Although at first it may seem that none of these are really related, the truth is they all have elements in common. In each case, the unexpected has happened. Just as not all plane crashes are deadly, not all IT mishaps have terrible consequences. With the proper training and approach, many problems can either be avoided in the first place or better handled if they do arise. The book contains practical guidance on: How to think about a disaster both before it happens and while it’s happening How to apply management skills used in other fields during disasters How to get everyone on board when it comes to planning for and handling disasters How to better deal with smaller, more manageable—and more frequently occurring—disasters What you’ll learn Discover the difference between a DR solution and a DR plan Define a disaster — it’s not always of the scale of a fire burning down the building. See when to actually implement your DR plan Who This Book Is For IT professionals in charge of developing their company’s disaster recovery plan who also need to raise issues to the required C-level people to make sure they have a viable plan.

Information technology (IT) has the potential to play a critical role in managing natural and human-made disasters. Damage to communications infrastructure, along with other communications problems exacerbated the difficulties in carrying out response and recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina. To assist government planning in this area, the Congress, in the E-government Act of 2002, directed the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to request the NRC to conduct a study on the application of IT to disaster management. This report characterizes disaster management providing a framework for considering the range and nature of information and communication needs; presents a vision of the potential for IT to improve disaster management; provides an analysis of structural, organizational, and other non-technical barriers to the acquisition, adoption, and effective use of IT in disaster; and offers an outline of a research program aimed at strengthening IT-enabled capabilities for disaster management.

Section 214 of the E-government Act of 2002 called on the Administrator of the Office of Electronic Government in the Office of Management and Budget, in consultation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to "ensure that a study is conducted on using information technology to enhance crisis preparedness, response, and consequence management of natural and manmade disasters." The section cited as a goal "to improve how information technology is used in coordinating and facilitating information on disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, while ensuring the availability of such information across multiple access channels." In early 2005, FEMA, via a subcontract through Battelle Memorial Institute, asked the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) of the National Research Council (NRC) to undertake a two-phase study on these issues. Summary of a Workshop on Using Information Technology to Enhance Disaster Management culminates phase 1 of the project. CSTB established the Committee on Using Information Technology to Enhance Disaster Management, and a public workshop was held under the committee's auspices on June 22-23, 2005. The committee's goal for the workshop was to establish a base of information for its study by hearing about present and future uses of IT from the perspective of federal, state, and local disaster management officials and users together with a sampling of relevant IT research and development activities. A variety of representatives of federal, state, and local government agencies, private industry, and the research community participated. Panelists at the workshop presented a range of views on the present state of the art and practice and future opportunities to harness information technology to aid in the management of natural and human-made disasters. This report summarizes some of the key points made by workshop participants. This report also contains the workshop agenda and includes biographical information for committee members and staff. In phase 2 of its study, the committee will supplement the inputs received at the workshop with information gathered at several site visits and a series of additional briefings. Phase 2 will culminate in a final report, expected in spring 2006, which provides findings and recommendations on requirements for effective use of information technology for disaster management, research and development needs and opportunities, and related research management and technology transition considerations.

Record breaking hurricane seasons, tornados, tsunamis, earthquakes, and intentional acts of mass-casualty violence, give lie to the delusion that disasters are the anomaly and not the norm. Disaster management is rooted in the fundamental belief that we can protect ourselves. Even if we cannot control all the causes, we can prepare and respond. We

Facing the Unexpected presents the wealth of information derived from disasters around the world over the past 25 years. The authors explore how these findings can improve disaster programs, identify remaining research needs, and discuss disaster within the broader context of sustainable development. How do different people think about disaster? Are we more likely to panic or to respond with altruism? Why are 110 people killed in a Valujet crash considered disaster victims while the 50,000 killed annually in traffic accidents in the U.S. are not? At the crossroads of social, cultural, and economic factors, this book examines these and other compelling questions. The authors review the influences that shape the U.S. governmental system for disaster planning and response, the effectiveness of local emergency agencies, and the level of professionalism in the field. They also compare technological versus natural disaster and examine the impact of technology on disaster programs.

The serious disturbances that occur for a short period of time and cause extensive material, economic, human and environmental loss are termed as disasters. Natural and man-made disasters are the two primary types of disasters. The natural phenomena such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornados and landslides are the natural disasters. Catastrophe such as transport accidents, oil spills and nuclear explosions are the examples of man-made disasters. Disaster management aims to reduce the harmful effects of disasters. The three main areas of disaster management are disaster planning, disaster recovery and disaster response. Disaster planning includes the methods used to prevent disasters from occurring. Disaster response is the ability to deal with the challenges presented by the disaster events. Disaster recovery includes the utilization of technological systems after disaster to return to the former condition. The book studies, analyzes and upholds the pillars of disaster management and its utmost significance in modern times. Most of the topics introduced herein cover new techniques and the applications of disaster management. This book will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.
