Reminiscences of expatriate life in Nigeria, West Africa, during the days of the Biafran War. Neither coups d'etat, curfews, capture by rebels, evacuation in a German boat full of beer, nor lack of imported booze and luxuries, placed restrictions on the hedonistic lifestyle enjoyed by many of the several thousand expatriates in the country at the time. [Author bio]Chris (Roberts) Meier lived in Nigeria during the Biafran War, in what was “the most exciting time of my life.” She has lived the past thirty years in Florida and has two grown daughters. Meier still keeps in contact with several old expat friends.

The Coast Road written by Paul Gogarty and has been published by Portico this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-17 with Travel categories.

Winner of the 'Travel Narrative Book of the Year' in 2005 by the British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW), The Coast Road presents an idiosyncratic and illuminating snapshot of England and what it is to be English today. In this travelogue, award-winning writer Paul Gogarty travels 3,000 miles in a motorhome, exploring intimate coastal communities and ruminating on the future of the English coast. All points of the compass are covered; after an unsettling benediction at Dover's Eastern Docks he travels to Derek Jarman's Dungeness; to rakish Brighton and Madame Rosina's Bournemouth; the mudflats and Arabian sands of the north- west, where he joins a roomful of George Formbys in Blackpool; the now infamous Morcambe Bay; Billy Butlin's Skegness; and a parachuting vicar. The journey comes full circle in the secret creeks of East Anglia. The Coast Road is a warm-hearted tribute to England's coastline written by a romantic spirit who beautifully captures both the idiosyncrasies of the nation and the euphoria of the open road.

Hell S Islands written by Stanley Coleman Jersey and has been published by Texas A&M University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-06 with History categories.

From August 1942 until February 1943, two armies faced each other amid the malarial jungles and blistering heat of Guadalcanal Island. The Imperial Japanese forces needed to protect and maintain the air base that gave them the ability to interdict enemy supply routes. The Allies were desperate to halt the advance of a foe that so far had inflicted crippling losses on the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor, then seized the Philippines, Wake Island, the Dutch East Indies, Guam, and other Allied territory. After months of relentless battle, the U.S. troops forced back the determined Japanese, providing what many historians believe was the decisive turning point in the Pacific theater of operations. Stanley Coleman Jersey, a medical air evacuation specialist in the South Pacific during World War II, has spent countless hours combing Australian, Japanese, and U.S. documents and interviewing more than 200 veterans of the Guadalcanal campaign, both Allied and Japanese. Beginning with the events that preceded the battle for Guadalcanal during the Australian defense of the southern Solomon Islands in late 1941, Jersey details the military preparations made in response to intelligence describing the creation of an enemy air base within striking distance of American supply lines and recounts the civilian evacuation that followed the Japanese arrival in New Guinea. With the stage set, he turns to the campaign itself, with particular emphasis on the combat during the critical period of August to December 1942. While Guadalcanal is his primary focus, Jersey also covers the roles played by forces occupying the other Solomon Islands, including the plight of construction laborers, air crews, and ground units. This book, chock-full of gripping battlefield accounts and harrowing first-person narratives, draws together for the first time Allied and Japanese perspectives on the bloody contest. It is certain to become an indispensable asset to historians of World War II.

Hell S Foundations written by Geoffrey Moorhouse and has been published by Faber & Faber this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-03 with History categories.

There is no shortage of books on the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign of 1915 but this one stands out. In it Geoffrey Moorhouse moves the focus from the more familar aspects to concentrate on one small mill town, Bury, in Lancashire, and to anatomize the long-lasting effect the Dardanelles had on it. Bury was the regimental home of the Lancashire Fusiliers. In the Gallipoli landings of 25 April 1915 it lost a large proportion of its youth. By May 1915, some 7,000 Bury men had already gone to war, to be followed by many others before Armistice Day. More than 1,600,from just three local battalions of the Fusiliers were among those who never returned. The regiment left 1,816 dead men on Gallipoli alone: it lost 13,642 soldiers in the Great War as a whole. This terrifying sacrifice left its mark. Bury commemorates Gallipoli on a scale similar to Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand and yet as the Second World War approached, recruitment to the regiment fell far behind that in other Lancashire towns. 'Hurtles one from rage and cynicism to involvement and tenderness . . . Moorhouse offers one of the most fascinating revelations of the orthodox British spirit, religious, political and social . . . This book makes wonderful reading.' Ronald Blythe, Sunday Times 'A fascinating new approach to this tragedy . . . Moorhouse's contribution (to the bibliography of Gallipoli) is of quite outstanding value.' Robert Rhodes James, The Independent 'A subtle and moving exploration of the way that memories of slaughter and loss shaped the town's post-first world war identity.' Terry Eagleton, New Statesman
