Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that can be spread to humans by infected ticks. If the disease is diagnosed early it is relatively easy to treat with antibiotics. However, if it's not diagnosed early it can become a chronic problem and lead to other health problems with a wide range of debilitating and sometimes life changing symptoms. Chronic Lyme disease can, in some rare cases, be fatal. According to public health experts in the USA, 300,000 people contract Lyme disease every year and many more go undiagnosed. In the UK Public Health England estimate there are between 2,000 and 3,000 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in England and Wales each year. Again, there are probably many more undiagnosed cases. This is thought to be down to poor diagnoses by doctors who are unfamiliar with the disease and the fact that the symptoms are not well known by the general public.
