We're being scammed and robbedagain. We're being frightened, bullied and brainwashed into thinking that our entire future is at stake because of the "government's deficit crisis" and the "government's debt crisis". We are all being told: America, it's time to tighten the belt.It isn't true. There is no crisis. It's manufactured. In this book, Jonathan Tasini explodes the myth of the government's deficit and debt "crisis". He digs into the false statements about the "crisis", who is behind the myth of the "crisis" and he shows that we have plenty of money.Using his trademark easy-to-understand writing style, Tasini leads the reader through a clear, penetrating look at our economic crisis. He shows that there is a crisis--but it has nothing to do with the government's "debt" or "deficit".He argues with facts and figures--but not in a Washington wonky style--that the real crisis is the on-going robbery of the American people by the leaders who continue to sell us on the virtues of the so-called "free market".

Risky Living is a fascinating collection of candid and intimate conversations with forty-five men and women who describe, in gripping detail, how physical risk is a familiar companion in their working lives, and how they deal with it. This is the first work of oral history to focus solely on people who work dangerous jobs. In the great tradition of books revealing the real lives of working men and women pioneered by Studs Terkel, Risky Living takes readers: Inside Antron Brown’s car as he launches his top fuel drag racer from zero to over 300 miles per hour Alongside world champion bull rider Justin McBride as he attempts to stay atop a 1,600-pound beast Next to storm chasing videographer Jeff Gammons as he painfully remembers the screams of Hurricane Katrina drowning victims Right behind Cameron Begbie as he recalls fighting hand-to-hand against insurgents in Iraq Inside the huddle with two-time Pro Bowl NFL player Kassim Osgood In the back of the jeep with National Geographic wildlife photographer Andy Casagrande Down the shaft with coal miner Jeff Shiner Into the swamp with alligator trapper Tredale Boudreaux 100 stories up with high-rise window washer Walter Diaz Risky Living reveals who these daring people are, what they endure for a paycheck, and how they feel about their jobs. They speak for themselves, in their words, and what they have to say reveals much about who they are, what they do, and why they do it.

No Place to Pee is an intimate collection from a woman who spent 5,000 hours in a male-dominated industry. Margaret H. Piggott, a retired physical therapist worked as a laborer in Alaska on the Klondike Highway and Alaskan Pipeline from 1975 to 1977. For the Klondike Highway, she worked on the brush-clearing, powder, and drill crews. On the pipeline, she worked in the shop at Chandalar, Beams and Anchors, detonating, culvert and insulation, and Butt List crews. Piggott’s gender meant she had a rough time, right from her first footfall in Skagway, “a windy place with white caps on the water.” But she’ll tell you in the next breath that she also had good times on this rollicking adventure of risk and weather. Only the toughest women can work in this world, she discovered, but the pay was worth it. This memoir, presented in diary format and written in quick, confessional bursts, captures the immediacy and survival of a lone woman in a man’s world.

A child of the Second World War, Alan Young developed two passions early in life; music and literature. In his twenties, having flunked an interview for the BBC, he decided to leave the world of academia behind and seek adventure in East Africa, using his academic experience to teach native Kenyans under the Teachers for East Africa scheme and becoming, briefly, an Outward Bound instructor helping to lead a party up Kilimanjaro. Roads Taken is his account of those vividly remembered days in a strange land which became a second home to him and where he made friends from all races and backgrounds.ÿ

'From start to end - very, very good' RODDY DOYLE 'Full of pop gossip that'll leave you starry-eyed, and written with a warmth and precision you'll want to savour for as long as you can . . . I didn't want it to end' SÉAMAS O'REILLY 'Funny, vivid and touching . . . An utter treat' RACHEL JOYCE ____________________________________________________________________________ In a small corner of a field in Wales, Tiffany Murray is hiding with Boggle the dog, dreaming of her mum's moussaka, blackberry and apple crumble, and, if she's lucky, ice-cold lemonade. A sheep bleats. The smell of hay tickles her nose. The twang of a guitar and crack of a snare carry on the breeze. It's the late 1970s and Tiff lives with her mum, Joan, at Rockfield, the iconic recording studios. This place of legend, where some of the most famous rock albums of all time were recorded, is the background to a freewheeling, ever-changing whirlwind of a childhood. Tiff's days are spent running around the farm, making friends with local wildlife and helping out with the endless array of dishes her mum creates to keep the bands fed. She's looking for a dog, she's looking for a father; but the one constant throughout is her and Joan, building an unconventional family in the most unlikely of locations. My Family and Other Rock Stars is Tiff's remarkable, truly unique story of growing up in a rural idyll, of Cordon Bleu cookery and of a childhood where the chances of bumping into Freddie Mercury playing piano, or a group of Hell's Angels turning up to record for Lemmy, or even the hope of David Bowie appearing, were as normal as hopscotch and homework.

Mosquito written by Gayl Jones and has been published by Beacon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-08 with Fiction categories.

From the highly acclaimed author of Corregidora and The Healing—a rare and unforgettable journey set along the US–Mexico border about identity, immigration, and “the new underground railroad.” “Jones’s great achievement is to reckon with both history and interiority, and to collapse the boundary between them.”—Anna Wiener, The New Yorker First discovered and edited by Toni Morrison, Gayl Jones has been described as one of the great literary writers of the 20th century. In Mosquito, she examines the US–Mexico border crisis through the eyes of Sojourner Nadine Jane Johnson, an African American truck driver known as Mosquito. Her journey beings after discovering a stowaway who nearly gives birth in the back of her truck, sparking her accidental and yet growing involvement in “the new underground railroad,” a sanctuary movement for Mexican immigrants. As Mosquito’s understanding of the immigrants’s need to forge new lives and identities deepens, so too does Mosquito’s romance with Ray, a gentle revolutionary, philosopher, and, perhaps, a priest. Along the road, Mosquito introduces us to Delgadina, a Chicana bartender who fries cactus, writes haunting stories, and studies to become a detective; Monkey Bread, a childhood pal who is, improbably, assistant to a blonde star in Hollywood; Maria, the stowaway who names her baby Journal, a misspelled tribute to her unwitting benefactor Sojourner; and many more.

Jubilation County, Georgia, Ten Years Ago: Chase Emrick was fourteen when her mother married Crow Tillman. Maybe it was his creepy name, or his sinister good looks; maybe it was the glass eye with the bolt of lightning for a pupil that he kept covered with a black eye patch, or maybe it was the rattlesnake tattoo that curled around his left wrist onto his hand, but for some reason, Chase never trusted Crow. Then one terrifying night of horror proved what Chase had felt all along . . . Crow Tillman was pure evil. New Haven, Connecticut, Present Day: Crow Tillman is ten years dead, but he hasn’t stopped haunting Chase Emrick. Everyone she’s ever been close to suffers horrible fates, leaving Chase all alone in this world. Haunted by Crow, she has spent the last ten years of her life proving mathematically that a dimension lies unseen in our reality—one where the dead can inflict their will on the living: a netherworld of horror where Crow Tillman is in complete control. Adam Cameron is a campus cop, and he’s utterly smitten by Chase’s frailty, beauty, and genius. But getting close to Chase drags Adam into a world he didn’t bargain for and head to head with the essence of evil and the reality of death. There is only one way to get Crow Tillman to leave Chase alone: To battle him, you must first die.
