The Ascent Of Eli Israel And Other Stories written by Jon Papernick and has been published by Skyhorse Publishing Inc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-05 with Fiction categories.

A profoundly unsettling collection of tales of Americans caught up in the ethnic, religious, social, economic, and political conflicts of modern day Israel, by an astonishing new voice. In a land where sudden death is an everyday fact of life, a boy dodges bullets and searches through rubble for news of his soldier father. An aging rabbi?s faith is tested by a crippling, seemingly supernatural affliction. A middle-aged man comforts his Holocaust-survivor mother as she faces senility, convinced that Nazis are conspiring against her. And the mysterious biblical red heifer makes a startling appearance in the midst of a decidedly contemporary struggle. In these unsettling tales, the remarkable Jon Papernick transports us to modern-day Israel, a country torn by war, strife, and controversy throughout the history of its statehood. Giving voice to striking characters--Israelis, Palestinians, and Americans; Arabs, Christians, and Jews--caught in the ethnic, religious, social, and political conflicts of a dangerous region, Papernick brings the images we glimpse from afar, in newspapers and on television, chillingly to life. By turns starkly realistic and allegorically fantastic, these tales chronicle the conflict from the inside and illuminate the suffering and anger experienced by those on all sides. In?An Unwelcome Guest,? a young Jewish settler from New York plays a deadly game of backgammon with a ghostly old Arab while his pregnant wife sleeps unaware. In?The King of the King of Falafel,? a restaurant rivalry ends in apocalyptic violence. In "Lucky Eighteen," two young Americans living in Jerusalem as the Oslo accords collapse juggle political activism and a devastating love triangle--under the dark specter of suicide bombings. And in the brilliant, horrifying title story, a lonely shepherd wanders a broken no-man's-land, carrying with him the burden of an unspeakable act. In these haunting and strangely beautiful stories, the tragic carnage of the Middle East is rendered in unforgettable form. Suffused with rage, violence, humor, magic, and religion, this gripping collection leaves a profound impact. Evenhanded yet passionate, shocking yet hopeful, The Ascent of Eli Israelheralds the arrival of a masterful storyteller. Please visit.

Eli Canaan is a believer. And, like many, he believes himself to be a principled and moral man. Well, for the most part anyway. But, after a series of missteps, sins, some would say, Eli's life is suddenly and unexpectedly altered forever. A spurned wife, a gypsy, a hex and spiritual intervention may all be at the root of Eli's unexpected, deep and earnest introspection, which is like nothing he has ever experienced before - in this world. God and Jesus, as well as a host of zany characters, help show Eli the pathway to redemption (among other things). During his journey Eli is entertained by atheists, a renowned psychoanalyst, and one of the greatest jokesters in history, Groucho Marx. Eli takes nothing for granted as he is guided through a series of events and opportunities for learning what ought to be everyone's purpose in life - living the commandments as they were meant to be lived by. An uplifting story of hope and meaning and belief in the goodness that can come by opening one's eyes to the Heavens... Sam Moffie once again creates a story which every reader will identify with, feel empathy for, and be entertained by. The protagonist's adventures and concomitant soul-searching take us to a heightened level, whereby we ourselves begin to seek and ultimately find the road to salvation, if we choose to follow it. And, as any reader of Moffie knows, a good laugh is never more than a page away, if that... Like Vonnegut... no holds barred Like Rand... the consummate pragmatist Like Aesop... a moral message disguised by humor Moffie... master of all domains

Eli S Story written by Meri-Jane Rochelson and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-06 with History categories.

Eli’s Story: A Twentieth-Century Jewish Life is first and foremost a biography. Its subject is Eli G. Rochelson, MD (1907–1984), author Meri-Jane Rochelson’s father. At its core is Eli’s story in his own words, taken from an interview he did with his son, Burt Rochelson, in the mid-1970s. The book tells the story of a man whose life and memory spanned two world wars, several migrations, an educational odyssey, the massive disruption of the Holocaust, and finally, a frustrating yet ultimately successful effort to restore his professional credentials and identity, as well as reestablish family life. Eli’s Story contains a mostly chronological narration that embeds the story in the context of further research. It begins with Eli’s earliest memories of childhood in Kovno and ends with his death, his legacy, and the author’s own unanswered questions that are as much a part of Eli’s story as his own words. The narrative is illuminated and expanded through Eli’s personal archive of papers, letters, and photographs, as well as research in institutional archives, libraries, and personal interviews. Rochelson covers Eli’s family’s relocation to southern Russia; his education, military service, and first marriage after he returned to Kovno; his and his family’s experiences in the Dachau, Stutthof, and Auschwitz concentration camps—including the deaths of his wife and child; his postwar experience in the Landsberg Displaced Persons (DP) camp, and his immigration to the United States, where he determinedly restored his medical credentials and started a new family. Rochelson recognizes that both the effort of reconstructing events and the reality of having personal accounts that confirm and also differ from each other in detail, make the process of gap-filling itself a kind of fiction—an attempt to shape the incompleteness that is inherent to the story. In the epilogue, the author reminds readers that the stories of lives don’t have clear chronologies. They go off in many directions, and in some ways they never end. An earlier reviewer said of the book, "Eli’s Story combines the care of a scholar with the care of a daughter." Both scholars and general readers interested in Holocaust narratives will be moved by this monograph.

ELI is a historical fiction adventure (wrapped in religious motif threads) that captures Dr. Weagleys inclination toward freedom, justice, pride, and hope that plates eternal salvation. Currently in retirement, Dr. Weagley enjoys writing tales of truth shielded in historical fiction in order to communicate the wisdom and blessings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Time and circumstance meet patience and faith in his works. Good and bad options bombard and abound confusing the imbalance of honor.
