It's the Mountain Way is a coming-of-age story filled with suspense and memories of first love. Savannah Benjamin, born and raised in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, knew the ways of the mountain. She had only experienced the outside world from the books she read. But books couldn't teach her how first love felt, or explain why some people who seemed good were not always trustworthy. They didn't tell her that teenagers could be mean or unfriendly. These lessons she had to learn for herself. Set in 1983, marrying young was not unusual in the isolated hollows and villages of the mountains. At fourteen, Savannah was no longer a child, but not yet an adult. Her mother had married at fifteen, she wanted more for her daughter. Horace Jenks, the local moonshiner, had other plans for Savannah.

In traversing the earth and living with the wilderness from Africa to the California Sierras, author Hoover Liddell came to realize the great energy of youth as we struggle to educate our planet and ourselves. Mountain Road is his journey of life and travel through the planet’s cities and towns as well as his time in San Francisco and living inside its schools. From a mountain road out of Africa, humankind continues its journey into a timeless universe. Human freedom is not dwelling in the past or the future but in the remarkableness and freshness of the present, where the adventure is. His journey from the Nigerian rainforests and desert across Africa through the Serengeti plains and the mountain road of Kilimanjaro takes him to the mountains of the Sierras. In his expeditions he discovers moments of vibrant energy and days of staying alive that are more profound than all the years of teaching in the schools. He finds the wilderness empowers us to find our own way and deepens our capabilities as we educate ourselves and the earth. Of what meaning is school or life itself if we are not serious and motivated for the adventure to educate the planet?

'All I wanted to do was go to sleep. And I was certain that if I did drift off, it would be for the last time.' In 1998, Paul Pritchard was struck on the head by a falling rock as he climbed a sea stack in Tasmania called the Totem Pole. Close to death, waiting for hours for rescue, Pritchard kept himself going with a promise that given the chance, he would 'at least attempt to live'. Left hemiplegic by his injury, Pritchard has spent the last two decades attempting to live, taking on adventures that seemed impossible for someone so badly injured while plumbing the depths of a mind almost snuffed out by his passion for climbing. Not content to simply survive, Pritchard finds ways to return to his old life, cycling across Tibet and expanding his mind on gruelling meditation courses, revisiting the past and understanding his compulsion for risk. Finally, he returns to climb the Totem Pole, the place where his life was almost extinguished. The Mountain Path is an adventure book like no other, an exploration of a healing brain, a journey into philosophy and psychology, a test of will and a triumph of hope.

FALLING LEAVES AND MOUNTAIN ASHES Starting in 1899, this 40-year saga is the tragic story of how the Blue Ridge mountain people ultimately become displaced to make way for the Shenandoah National Park. Set against an authentic background of mountain life, and the raw, unspoiled beauty of the mountains, it is a rich weave of humor and heartache, love and violence, courage and brutality, feuds and strong family ties. A brave young mountain woman, Mary Harley, elopes to Claw Mountain, to marry Zachary Thomas Buchanan, the eldest of the “Buckos”, the violent and lawless sixteen living sons of Obediah who comes from a wealthy valley family, but is a fugitive from the law and a renowned moonshiner. The Buchanan clan has been feuding with the neighboring Galtrey’s for 30 years. The handsome, knife-scarred Eli is one of the younger Buckos, but the most feared. However, nobody, except Zachary Thomas, knows the dark, terrible secret he harbors within him. Desperately unhappy living with her silent, uncommunicative husband, Mary, pregnant with her first child, attempts to escape the mountain, but is caught, and becomes horrified witness to the terrible brutality of the clan’s patriarch. Then she and Zachary Thomas are thrown together during a long, terrible winter. . . Eli, a natural mimic and gifted pretender, enters Skyland, a famous mountain summer resort, to sell moonshine to its colorful owner. He falls madly in love with Annabel, the beautiful daughter of a reverend who he saves from being struck by a rattlesnake. He later moves to Washington to become a partner in a distillery, and be close to Annabel, even though she is engaged to an aide to vice president Theodore Roosevelt. Eli becomes wealthy and successful, his own influence even extending to the White House. After Prohibition is enacted, Reverend Cotterall becomes the country’s leading Prohibitionist and is determined to keep his daughter away from Eli, whom he loathes. The story comes to a dramatic climax when devastating secrets are revealed.

A Path Into The Mountains written by Caleb Swift Carter and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-31 with Religion categories.

Shugendō has been an object of fascination among scholars and the general public, yet its historical development remains an enigma. This book offers a provocative reexamination of the social, economic, and spiritual terrain from which this mountain religious system arose. Caleb Carter traces Shugendō through the mountains of Togakushi (Nagano Prefecture), while situating it within the religious landscape of medieval and early modern Japan. His is the first major study to view Shugendō as a self-conscious religious system—something that was historically emergent but conceptually distinct from the prevailing Buddhist orders of medieval Japan. Beyond Shugendō, his work rethinks a range of issues in the history of Japanese religions, including exclusionary policies toward women, the formation of Shintō, and religion at the social and geographical margins of the Japanese archipelago. Carter takes a new tack in the study of religions by tracking three recurrent and intersecting elements—institution, ritual, and narrative. Examination of origin accounts, temple records, gazetteers, and iconography from Togakushi demonstrates how practitioners implemented storytelling, new rituals and festivals, and institutional measures to merge Shugendō with their mountain’s culture while establishing social legitimacy and economic security. Indicative of early modern trends, the case of Mount Togakushi reveals how Shugendō moved from a patchwork of regional communities into a translocal system of national scope, eventually becoming Japan’s signature mountain religion.
