Nel corso dell'Ottocento intellettuali, politici e combattenti per la libertà considerarono il Risorgimento un momento di importante trasformazione per le sorti del liberalismo e nella costruzione dello Stato-nazione. Tra costoro spiccavano di certo cittadini e rappresentanti degli Stati Uniti d'America che videro nel Risorgimento un'ideale continuazione del percorso liberal-repubblicano avviato con la guerra d'indipendenza americana. Questo volume prende in esame gli ultimi cinquant'anni del secolo nel contesto transnazionale, quando gli Stati Uniti rivolsero alle vicende italiane un'attenzione particolare che ha pochi eguali nella storia dei rapporti tra i due paesi. A seguire gli eventi e a coinvolgersi in essi non furono solo uomini di cultura e politici radicali ma anche gli apparati del governo federale e gli stessi funzionari di stanza in Europa. Il sacrificio di tanta gente comune insieme alle gesta di Garibaldi e alle sottigliezze di Cavour, attirarono un interesse che, come scrisse un diplomatico al culmine dell'esperienza della Repubblica romana del 1849, non consentiva di “rimanere spettatori indifferenti di fronte a una simile lotta”.

Questo è il terzo volume di un lavoro di ricerca collettiva iniziata otto anni fa dal Centro di Studi Americani. Dopo la pubblicazione dei volumi relativi alla Repubblica Romana e all'Unità d'Italia si presenta qui una collezione di saggi sugli Stati Uniti e la questione romana. Lo scopo è ancora una volta quello di analizzare le reazioni statunitensi alle profonde trasformazioni che interessavano la penisola nel secondo Ottocento, focalizzando l'attenzione sugli anni immediatamente precedenti ed immediatamente successivi alla Breccia di Porta Pia. L'argomento non è ignoto alla storiografia, ma ha ricevuto una trattazione limitata, soprattutto dopo le pubblicazioni, ormai lontane nel tempo, di Howard R. Marraro e Leo F. Stock negli Stati Uniti e di Giorgio Spini in Italia. Quello attuale è perciò il primo tentativo dopo decenni di riprendere in considerazione tale tematica, e di affrontarla sotto prospettive nuove mantenendo al centro del lavoro la discussione nazionale e internazionale su Roma capitale. Il volume d'altronde non mira a definire tanto la temperie culturale negli Stati Uniti, quanto a capire come essa abbia ispirato una serie di iniziative diplomatiche e politiche: dal sostegno, neanche troppo velato, alla fase finale del nostro Risorgimento al riconoscimento di Roma capitale italiana, nonostante le proteste cattoliche. Come rilevano alcuni dei contributi, il discorso sull'Italia e su Roma era a volte uno specchio per parlare di questioni interne alla nazione divisa in due dalla guerra e dalla ricostruzione che ne seguì. Ancora una volta ci si è affidati alle fonti archivistiche cercando comunque di tenere presente un quadro più vasto dei rapporti diplomatici o religiosi. Per questo il presente volume fonde storia e letteratura e non disdegna il confronto con altre forme di espressione in modo di rendere meglio conto dell'atmosfera culturale negli Stati Uniti di quegli anni. Il volume è a cura di Daniele Fiorentino e Matteo Sanfilippo.

He applied science to life, not with the disinterested precision of a scientist, but with the aims and methods of a humanist. After 1861 he represented the United States at the Court of Savoy, in the critical years in which Italy was built, and the United States reshaped along modern lines. From his perspective, he described prominent Italian contemporaries and their relations with the United States and his opinion could not be ignored by the Department of State. The hero of the Marsh reports was Giuseppe Garibaldi; the "devil", Napoleon III. His luminous exposition, with a clear and fresh language, revealed many aspects of his historical times and of the images of Italy, which were frequently corroborated by the diaries of American tourists and writers doing their "Grand Tour": far from being a modern country, Italy appeared a wonderful destination for traveling, the land of Dante, Machiavelli, Petrarca.
