Music In Late Renaissance Early Baroque Italy written by Tim Carter and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Music categories.

This book proposes new ways of exploring vocal and instrumental music in northern and central Italy in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The text focuses on the consolidation of the 'High Renaissance' style of Josquin Desprez and his contemporaries, and the subsequent transformation of this style under the pressure of new aesthetic and functional demands made upon music, and of shifting social, political and cultural circumstances as Italy moved into the period of the Counter-Reformation, and the arts moved through Mannerism into the Baroque. The effects of these changing contexts upon such masters as Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Claudio Monteverdi are fully documented here, but this is less a 'great composer' book than a study of secular, sacred and theatrical styles and genres, both within the musical market-place and in relation to music's sister arts. The author also attempts to view music, and indeed all the arts, as essentially political phenomena, conditioned by (but also conditioning) social and cultural constraints. There are copious music examples and an extensive bibliography; considerable space is also devoted to extracts from contemporary documents in translation to allow the reader first-hand experience of one of the most exciting periods in music history.

The Civic Muse written by Frank A. D'Accone and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-12-01 with Music categories.

Siena, blessed with neither the aristocratic nor the ecclesiastical patronage enjoyed by music in other northern Italian centers like Florence, nevertheless attracted first-rate composers and performers from all over Europe. As Frank A. D'Accone shows in this scrupulously documented study, policies developed by the town to favor the common good formed the basis of Siena's ambitious musical programs. Based on decades of research in the town's archives, D'Accone's The Civic Muse brilliantly illuminates both the sacred and the secular aspects of more than three centuries of music and music-making in Siena. After detailing the history of music and liturgy at Siena's famous cathedral and of civic music at the Palazzo Pubblico, D'Accone describes the crucial role that music played in the daily life of the town, from public festivities for foreign dignitaries to private musical instruction. Putting Siena squarely on the Renaissance musical map, D'Accone's monumental study will interest both musicologists and historians of the Italian Renaissance.

Based primarily on previously unpublished documents, the studies assembled here in this first selection by Frank D'Accone set the background for the musical efflorescence that occurred in Florence in the later 15th century and for the emergence in the early 16th century of a new Florentine school of composers. He traces the origins and development of musical chapels at the Cathedral and Baptistery, and the growth of musical establishments at several other churches such as the Santissima Annunziata, Santa Trinita and San Lorenzo.
