Throughout the Cold War, the United States encountered unexpected challenges from Italy and France, two countries with the strongest, and determinedly most anti-American, Communist Parties in Western Europe. Based primarily on new evidence from communist archives in France and Italy, as well as research archives in the United States, Alessandro Brogi's original study reveals how the United States was forced by political opposition within these two core Western countries to reassess its own anticommunist strategies, its image, and the general meaning of American liberal capitalist culture and ideology. Brogi shows that the resistance to Americanization was a critical test for the French and Italian communists' own legitimacy and existence. Their anti-Americanism was mostly dogmatic and driven by the Soviet Union, but it was also, at crucial times, subtle and ambivalent, nurturing fascination with the American culture of dissent. The staunchly anticommunist United States, Brogi argues, found a successful balance to fighting the communist threat in France and Italy by employing diplomacy and fostering instances of mild dissent in both countries. Ultimately, both the French and Italian communists failed to adapt to the forces of modernization that stemmed both from indigenous factors and from American influence. Confronting America illuminates the political, diplomatic, economic, and cultural conflicts behind the U.S.-communist confrontation.

Molto tempo prima che giungesse in Occidente la grande letteratura concentrazionaria sovietica, donne e uomini di sinistra (esuli russi compresi) iniziarono a raccogliere testimonianze e documenti su arresti, deportazioni e lavoro forzato realizzati dallo stato sovietico. Tra le due guerre, a Praga e a Berlino, a Parigi e a Londra fino a Città del Messico e a New York, una rete transnazionale lavorò a un immaginario primo “libro nero” del comunismo sovietico. I protagonisti di questo grande impegno morale e intellettuale vissero vicende alterne: spesso si trovarono ad essere una forza minoritaria, perché le ragioni commerciali, politiche e ideologiche si dimostrarono in Occidente più forti della difesa dei diritti umani. In altri casi essi riuscirono invece a collegarsi alle strategie geopolitiche dei governi statunitense e britannico e al processo di formazione di norme giuridiche a livello internazionale. L’aver insistito per decenni che un mondo migliore si costruisce espandendo i diritti degli individui, e non proteggendo la sicurezza dello stato rivoluzionario, ha forse salvato le ragioni della sinistra come forza globale nel XXI secolo.

This book reconstructs the fate of Italian prisoners of war captured by the Red Army between August 1941 and the winter of 1942-43. On 230.000 Italians left on the Eastern front almost 100.000 did not come back home. Testimonies and memoirs from surviving veterans complement the author's intensive work in Russian and Italian archives. The study examines Italian war crimes against the Soviet civilian population and describes the particularly grim fate of the thousands of Italian military internees who after the 8 September 1943 Armistice had been sent to Germany and were subsequently captured by the Soviet army to be deported to the USSR. The book presents everyday life and death in the Soviet prisoner camps and explains the particularly high mortality among Italian prisoners. Giusti explores how well the system of prisoner labor, personally supervised by Stalin, was planned, starting in 1943. A special focus of the study is antifascist propaganda among prisoners and the infiltration of the Soviet security agencies in the camps. Stalin was keen to create a new cohort of supporters through the mass political reeducation of war prisoners, especially middle-class intellectuals and military élite. The book ends with the laborious diplomatic talks in 1946 and 1947 between USSR, Italy, and the Holy See for the repatriation of the surviving prisoners.

Il volume raccoglie quanto con entusiasmo e rigore scientifico abbiamo tentato di comporre all’interno di un laboratorio di scrittura di “testi militari” nel corso di studi in Storia delle Istituzioni miitari presso l’Università di Perugia. I più valenti contributi trovano spazio in questo volume che raccoglie non solo le ricerche svolte in lunghi mesi di lavoro ma anche quelle condotte liberamente dai vari autori nell’arco del loro periodo di studio e formazione su temi di storia militare. Il risultato che ne deriva è un mosaico polifonico e variegato di studi militari che intersecano note personali, ricerche di ampio respiro o anche di microscopiche tematiche che vanno comunque ad aggiungere tasselli importanti alla ricerca storica complessiva. Talvolta, accanto a progetti di portata nazionale o internazionale, studi monografici così strutturati possono aprire le porte a riflessioni su cui spesso ci si potrebbe poco interrogare, presi dal desiderio di guardare solo agli eventi di maggior impatto militare. Scopriamo così, che dietro a fatti militari di minor rilievo spesso ci sono storie di eroi “dimenticati” oppure mai ricordati, di uomini che hanno dato un contributo a costruire l’Italia di oggi, senza che però di loro si sappia nulla. E così, è bastato l’ingresso in un archivio militare, la ricerca di fogli matricolari, l’incrocio di fonti e la lettura di riviste dell’epoca per strappare all’oblio un antenato che ha combattto valorsamente per la patria oppure un drappello di militari che ha pagato con la vita la fedeltà a uno Stato che non lo ha saputo tutelare abbastanza con la firma dell’armistizio di Cassibile. Tra i contributi del presente volume troviamo anche storie provenienti da interrogatori fatti ai militari ritornati dai luoghi di combattimento, testimoni attendibili di un tempo che spesso viene raccontato dall’esterno ma che avrebbe bisogno anche e soprattutto di una lettura proveniente dall’interno. Il mio personale ringraziamento va a tutti gli autori dei saggi che seguiranno, per aver saputo con coraggio, e tanta umiltà, ben interpretare il compito loro assegnato, nella speranza che sappiano far tesoro di questa esperienza di ricerca. E, come sempre, al lettore l’ardua sentenza.
