We live in an age in which there appears to be no such thing as absolute truth. People seek comfort in political, religious and cultural ideologies which seem to offer a solution to this current morass of relative values. Unfortunately, uncritical acceptance of these ideologies, beyond a shadow of a doubt, can lead the way to a dangerous intolerance. There is, however, a valuable tool which we can use to submit any aspect of life to critical reason and defeat all forms of intolerance: doubt. Doubt widens our horizons and enables us to seek a higher truth which will set us free. Bertrand Russell said: “The fundamental cause of trouble is that in the modern world the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt”. He was right: in fact the best teachers I have had in life were not the ones who provided certain answers to my doubts, but those who questioned my certainties...

Perché si viaggia? Qual è il senso del viaggio e della metafora che si cela dietro il naturale ed inarrestabile desiderio di spostarsi da un luogo all’altro? Si viaggia solo per il piacere di essere “in viaggio”, per la mera curiosità di trovarsi di fronte ad orizzonti diversi, per scoprire nuove culture, o non, invece, per la necessità di trovare un punto di equilibrio, una sorta di “centro di gravità” che ci possa aiutare a conoscere meglio noi stessi? Io penso che lo spirito d’avventura giochi un ruolo importante, seppur non decisivo, nella nostra scelta di metterci in cammino per le strade del mondo; al contempo, non credo che un viaggio possa trovare la sua unica ragion d’essere, in quella banale ed esibizionistica soddisfazione che si prova nel poter dire “io c’ero…io ci sono stato!”. Evidentemente ci deve essere una motivazione più profonda che, a prescindere dalla meta, ci spinge ad avere sempre una valigia in mano e ci permette di liberare la nostra mente dai fantasmi dell’abitudine. Non è un caso che giunti alla fine di un viaggio, spesso ci accorgiamo d’aver viaggiato non per andare da qualche parte, ma proprio per viaggiare, per provare una nuova emozione, per incontrare qualcuno o fuggire da qualcosa, per conoscere, per cambiare opinione e vincere i pregiudizi, ma, soprattutto, per indagare nelle profondità del nostro animo. Fra tutte le metafore che sono state adoperate per spiegare il senso del viaggio, forse quella di Sant’Agostino sintetizza, meglio di qualunque altra, la ragione profonda che dovrebbe spingere ogni uomo a considerare la fine di un viaggio solo come l’inizio di un altro: “Il mondo è un libro e quelli che non viaggiano ne leggono solo una pagina”.

La crisi di valori del nostro tempo e la mancanza di punti di riferimento spingono l'uomo contemporaneo a cercare rifugio in ideologie politiche, correnti di pensiero o fedi religiose che, se da un lato rappresentano una sorta di antidoto al dilagante relativismo qualunquistico, dall'altro, qualora abbracciate in modo acritico ed estremistico, possono indurre ad assumere condotte pericolosamente intolleranti. Di contro, il dubbio metodico, sottoponendo tutta la realtà al vaglio della ragione critica, diventa uno strumento imprescindibile dell'intelligenza umana ed allarga in modo fertile i nostri orizzonti, poiché non si prefigge la negazione della verità, bensì, costituisce esso stesso il presupposto per la ricerca di una verità consapevole, equilibrata e libera da pregiudizi. Diceva Bertrand Russel: "il problema dell'umanità è che gli stupidi sono sempre sicurissimi su tutto mentre gli individui più intelligenti sono pieni di dubbi". Non sarà un caso, ma i migliori insegnanti che ho avuto nella vita non sono stati quelli che hanno fornito una risposta certa ai miei dubbi, bensì quelli che hanno messo in dubbio le mie certezze.

«Educazione» e «formazione» sono concetti tra loro sinonimi, analoghi, opposti, o interdipendenti? Servono per distinguere due realtà pedagogicamente differenti, oppure sono solamente il frutto di un dispositivo linguistico, che muta di significato a seconda dei contesti, dei processi o dei pedagogisti di riferimento? In quest’ultimo caso, però, non si rischierebbe di compromettere la saldezza epistemologica della pedagogia come teoria e pratica dell’educazione, in quanto nemmeno capace di concordare sui pilastri concettuali essenziali del proprio costituirsi? Il volume intende rispondere a questi interrogativi attraverso la testimonianza di alcuni tra i più autorevoli pedagogisti italiani, allo scopo di avviare un confronto sulla possibilità di individuare un «lessico pedagogico», se non condiviso, quantomeno chiaro e criticamente consapevole sia delle proprie possibilità sia dei propri limiti.
