This well-documented and fascinating book tells how, over the centuries, a series of visionaries, scientists, technologists, and politicians fostered the involvement of Italy in space exploration. The lives of these pioneers was often far from easy, yet they persevered. The fruits of their efforts can today be witnessed in Italy’s success within the cutting-edge space sector. Italy’s history in space started at the end of the fourteenth century and continued with the development of fireworks. Later, the nineteenth century marked the beginning of research into rockets in a more scientific way. After World War II, rocket technology was advanced with the aid of German scientists, and in the 1960s Luigi Broglio, the father of Italian space exploration, designed the San Marco satellite. In 1979 the first Italian Space Plan was launched, but it was the foundation of the Italian Space Agency in 1988 that kick-started a program of exploration in various fields of cosmic research. The outcome was construction of the Vega launcher and collaboration in the International Space Station. Now the Italian space industry stands ready to play an important role in the Gateway orbital station. All of this history, and more, is explored in this riveting book.

This book, which contains a wealth of facts and is very easy to read, is the exciting story of a thrilling adventure, encompassing Italian participation in the various projects for a space laboratory, from the Spacelab to the Columbus program. The story is well worth telling because, apart from a narrow circle of specialists, only a few people are aware that Italy made such an outstanding technical and industrial contribution to space exploration. The author, now President of Alenia Spazio, has been directly involved in the most important phases of this great technological challenge for more than thirty years. His reconstruction -technically meticulous and enlivened by vivid human aspects- aims especially at "pointing out the spirit animating these events and the strategy at the basis of such enterprises". As a matter of fact, Italian participation in space programs has been guided by a strategy that, "thanks to the enlightened vision of a few people", enabled Italy to acquire a privileged position in the exploration and exploitation of this "new frontier" of mankind. 2009 engineering science book award from IAA.

Stamping The Earth From Space written by Renato Dicati and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-10 with Science categories.

This unique book presents a historical and philatelic survey of Earth exploration from space. It covers all areas of research in which artificial satellites have contributed in designing a new image of our planet and its environment: the atmosphere and ionosphere, the magnetic field, radiation belts and the magnetosphere, weather, remote sensing, mapping of the surface, observation of the oceans and marine environments, geodesy, and the study of life and ecological systems. Stamping the Earth from Space presents the results obtained with the thousands of satellites launched by the two former superpowers, the Soviet Union and the United States, and also those of the many missions carried out by the ESA, individual European countries, Japan, China, India, and the many emerging space nations. Beautifully illustrated, it contains almost 1100 color reproductions of philatelic items. In addition to topical stamps and thematic postal documents, the book provides an extensive review of astrophilatelic items. The most important space missions are documented through event covers and cards canceled at launch sites, tracking stations, research laboratories, and mission control facilities.

Space Movement And The Economy In Roman Cities In Italy And Beyond written by Frank Vermeulen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-26 with History categories.

How were space and movement in Roman cities affected by economic life? What can the study of Roman urban landscapes tell us about the nature of the Roman economy? These are the central questions addressed in this volume. While there exist many studies of Roman urban space and of the Roman economy, rarely have the two topics been investigated together in a sustained fashion. In this volume, an international team of archaeologists and historians focuses explicitly on the economics of space and mobility in Roman Imperial cities, in both Italy and the provinces, east and west. Employing many kinds of material and written evidence and a wide range of methodologies, the contributors cast new light both on well-known and on less-explored sites. With their direct focus on the everyday economic uses of urban spaces and the movements through them, the contributors offer a fresh and innovative perspective on the workings of Roman urban economies and on the debates concerning space in the Roman world. This volume will be of interest to archaeologists and historians, both those studying the Greco-Roman world and those focusing on urban economic space in other periods and places as well as to other scholars studying premodern urbanism and urban economies.

Italian Pavements written by Kim Williams and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Church architecture categories.

Beginning with the Pantheon in Rome, Italian Pavements: Patterns in Space compares and contrasts pavements of every epoch up to the present century. Overall pavement layouts are discussed with respect to the historical moment in which they were conceived. Possible alternatives are discussed to underscore the capacity of patterns to focus the spectator's attention and direct his movement. Individual pattern details are examined in terms of graphic design, proportions, materials and techniques. In order to study pavements, Kim Williams surveyed architectural monuments in all regions of Italy. The precisely scaled, hand-colored renderings that illustrate this work reveal the pavements with a level of detail not attainable in any other medium. Many of the pavements have never been documented before.
