Excerpt from Scenes From Italy's War Since I wrote this Preface and the first third Of the book, the winter's leisure has been interrupted by the brief campaign in which the Italians captured men and guns, liberated Trieste and Trento, and forced Austria to surrender. That part Of the book stands as first written, with the alteration or addition of a very few sentences referring to the end Of the war. We have thus, for more than three years, been living in constant daily contact with Italians of all ranks, some times joining their messes, always receiving their orders, discussing points of service with them, loading our ambulances daily with their sick and wounded. Our Unit also had for two years a field hospital for Italian soldiers. These opportunities for intercourse and oh servation have been rendered greater by the confidence with which we have always been treated by the Italian chiefs with whom we came in contact, by the spirit Of hospitality and comradeship in which we have been received by thousands of Italian Officers in the scores Of different divisions that we have served, and by the popularity of our service among the peasant soldiers in the ranks. Excerpt from Italy and the War IN publishing this volume for the benefit of the Italian Red Cross, the National Association of University Professors has been actuated by the desire to place before the public a further expression of the justice and sanctity of the cause for which Italy is now fighting, and to which the Italian University, proud of the glorious pages inscribed by it in the history of the Risorgimento, has consecrated its entire ardour and faith. With these words the following essays by different writers, originally issued under the title La Nosim Guerra, were introduced not only to the Italian, but also to the French public, and with the like aim they are now given to English readers. The English version has unfortunately suffered from the delay inevitable in translation and publication, during which period the rapid march of events that has taken place, causes some of its contents already to appear belated. Excerpt from Italy at War The position and influence of the Papacy afford one of the most interesting topics in Italy to-day, and I have inquired into them with diligence; but after careful reflection I have come to the conclusion that the public interest is best served by making no reference whatever to them during the war. Suffice it to say that there are forty clerical deputies in the Chamber, and the Vatican controls two hundred and eighty seats, whose members must take good care not to offend by voting against religious education or any other proposal of great import ance to the Clerical Party. I have sought to emphasise a point of View that is general and increasing in Italy: that it is unworthy of great cities and a great nation to depend unduly on tourists who come to gape idly at noble monuments. But I hope that my neglect of paint and masonry may not be construed as ignorance of the fact that Italy has been the mother of the arts, the torch-bearer of civilisa tion throughout the dark ages, the creator and giver of all the colours and perfumes and joys still left for dreamers' souls. The point is that, during and after war, Italy must concern herself more particularly with sober, practical matters, such as trade and commerce and the enemy's confusion in every walk of life.
