Laboratory written by Sandra Kaji-O'Grady and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-10 with Design categories.

An illustrated examination of laboratory architecture and the work that it does to engage the public, recruit scientists, and attract funding. The laboratory building is as significant to the twenty-first century as the cathedral was to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The contemporary science laboratory is built at the grand scales of cathedrals and constitutes as significant an architectural statement. The laboratory is a serious investment in architectural expression in an attempt to persuade us of the value of the science that goes on inside. In this lavishly illustrated book, Sandra Kaji-O'Grady and Chris L. Smith explore the architecture of modern life science laboratories, and the work that it does to engage the public, recruit scientists, and attract funding. Looking at the varied designs of eleven important laboratories in North America, Europe, and Australia, all built between 2005 and 2019, Kaji-O'Grady and Smith examine the relationship between the design of contemporary laboratory buildings and the ideas and ideologies of science. Observing that every laboratory architect and client declares the same three aspirations—to eliminate boundaries, to communicate the benefits of its research programs, and to foster collaboration—Kaji-O'Grady and Smith organize their account according to the themes of boundaries, expression, and socialization. For instance, they point to the South Australian Health and Medical Institute's translucent envelope as the material equivalent of institutional accountability; the insistent animal imagery of the NavarraBioMed laboratory in Spain; and the Hillside Research Campus's mimicry of the picturesque fishing village that once occupied its site. Through these and their other examples, Kaji-O'Grady and Smith show how the architecture of the laboratory shapes the science that takes place within it.

The Small House Its Architecture And Surroundings written by Arthur Martin and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-24 with Architecture categories.

Excerpt from The Small House Its Architecture and Surroundings In writing the following pages, every endeavour has been made to adhere to two conditions. First, that the book was to be for those who wished to build for themselves; not for their architects, nor for speculators. In fact, it was to be a guide for the client to the line of thought generally adopted by the architectural profession on the subject of building a home. Secondly, that only a single class of house was to be discussed - namely, one designed for gentlefolk and their servants, but not costing more than about £1000. It has ever been the case since the architect became a professional man, and ceased to employ his own masons, that one of his chief difficulties has been to impart to his client a proper understanding of the building he proposes to erect. Plans and elevations give a diagram of the dry bones; a perspective view may give the general outline, but neither of these will carry any conviction to the lay mind without some vision of life as it will be in the completed building, or unless each drawing and architectural conversation carries with it the scent of real bricks and mortar. This booklet provides a general introduction to the National Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture. The Architecture is the first step toward achieving the vision Congress put forth for ITS in 1991: a vision of a seamless, multimodal, national intelligent transportation system that would have a consistent character across the country. The following questions are addressed: What's the National Architecture Program really all about? What is the National Architecture? What does it do for ITS? How did a National Architecture develop? What does the National Architecture look like? What does the Architecture tell us? What happens next? Where can I get more information?

How Architecture Got Its Hump written by Roger Connah and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-04-13 with Architecture categories.

Fables of content and undoing on the current state of architecture. In How Architecture Got Its Hump, Roger Connah explores the "interference" of other disciplines with and within contemporary architecture. He asks whether photography, film, drawing, philosophy, and language are merely fashionable props for architectural hallucinations or alibis for revisions of history. Or, are they a means for widening the site of architecture? Connah shows how these disciplines have not only contributed to new developments in architectural theory and practice, but have begun to insinuate new possibilities of space. Sometimes seamless, sometimes awkward like the hump acquired by the camel in one of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories, these disciplines have had their own responsibilities and excesses grafted onto architecture, just as architecture has tried to shake off their limitations. Taking interference a step further, Connah also considers the implications of philosophical incongruity and architectural unrest. He asks how architecture loses its head, transcends the dead language it now entraps, and houses meanings it wants to contest. Hardly bleak questions, suggests Connah, for they point to ways for architecture to rescue itself.
