Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott is a classic example of adventure literature. It is a pure “English” novel which describes the actions happening due to the death feud between Anglo-Saxons and Norman conquerors. After The Third Crusade, knights-crusaders come back home. Unfortunately, King Richard the Lionheart is captured by the Duke of Austria. His brother and a throne keeper Prince John (future John Lackland) would like to save a royal throne for him. But will the crusaders who were fighting together with King Richard agree to this? And the main question – who is this mysterious “disinherited” knight who always prevents Prince John’s servants, noble Norman landowners from implementing their plans? What secret is he hiding?

For this novel, Scott moved far away from the setting of his own turbulent time. He went back to the late 12th century, and to England rather than the Scottish settings of all his previous novels. He connected his writing Ivanhoe with his concerns about contemporary events. Scott drew together the apparently opposing themes of historical reality and chivalric romance, social realism and high adventure, past and present.

Ivanhoe: A Romance is a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, first published in late 1819 in three volumes. At the time it was written it represented a shift by Scott away from fairly realistic novels set in Scotland in the comparatively recent past, to a somewhat fanciful depiction of medieval England.Ivanhoe is that the story of 1 of the remaining Anglo-Saxon noble families at a time when the nobility in England was overwhelmingly Norman. It follows the Saxon protagonist, Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe, who is out of favour together with his father for his allegiance to the Norman king Richard the Lionheart. The story is about in 1194, after the failure of the Third Crusade, when many of the Crusaders were still returning to their homes in Europe. King Richard, who had been captured by Leopold of Austria on his return journey to England, was believed to still be in captivity.

The Normans conquered England in the 11th century by defeating the Saxons. Though King Richard was a Norman but he had the required values of leadership and justice. The key figure, Wilfred of Ivanhoe is a Saxon who chose to enter the service of Richard, learnt all the arts of chivalry and went off to the Crusades.
