You think this is dignified? A bunch of students playing with someone's medical records? Why did 20th century Ireland lock up so many people? After all the scandals about Ireland's institutions - the industrial schools, the mother and baby homes, the Magdalene laundries - why have we still barely investigated the largest institutions of them all: the psychiatric hospitals? Today, Grangegorman is home to the newly opened campus of Technological University Dublin. But for nearly 200 years, it housed a forbidding institution behind high walls. The Asylum Workshop is a new documentary play by Colin Murphy about the history of Ireland's first public psychiatric hospital. Drawing on unique access to the hospital's archives, it weaves together verbatim testimony from patients and families, reports from doctors and nurses, and analysis from historians and psychiatrists. This edition is published to coincide with the production by Technological University Dublin and Grangegorman Histories in the East Quad Black Box Theatre in June 2023.

Hearing Voices written by Brendan Kelly and has been published by Irish Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-07 with History categories.

Hearing Voices: The History of Psychiatry in Ireland is a monumental work by one of Ireland’s leading psychiatrists, encompassing every psychiatric development from the Middle Ages to the present day, and examining the far-reaching social and political effects of Ireland’s troubled relationship with mental illness. From the “Glen of Lunatics”, said to cure the mentally ill, to the overcrowded asylums of later centuries – with more beds for the mentally ill than any other country in the world – Ireland has a complex, unsettled history in the practice of psychiatry. Kelly’s definitive work examines Ireland’s unique relationship with conceptions of mental ill health throughout the centuries, delving into each medical breakthrough and every misuse of authority – both political and domestic – for those deemed to be mentally ill. Through fascinating archival records, Kelly writes a crisp and accessible history, evaluating everything from individual case histories to the seismic effects of the First World War, and exploring the attitudes that guided treatments, spanning Brehon Law to the emerging emphasis on human rights. Hearing Voices is a marvel that affords incredible insight into Ireland’s social and medical history while providing powerful observations on our current treatment of mental ill health in Ireland.

Openhearted written by Ann Ingle and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-23 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

SHORTLISTED FOR TWO IRISH BOOK AWARDS 2021 'Something they don't tell you about getting older is that you fall. Oh, you hear about it in passing, of course, "She had a fall, poor thing". Falling is not something you ever think about as a younger woman. You think about falling in love . . .' At 20 Londoner Ann Ingle fell madly in love with an Irish fellow she met on holiday in Cornwall. At the church to arrange their shotgun wedding she discovered that he hadn't even told her his real name. Sixty-odd years later Ann looks back on that first glorious fall and in a series of essays considers what she has learned from the life that followed - bringing eight children into the world, their father's years of mental illness and tragic death at 40, being a cash-strapped single mother in 1980s Dublin, coming into her own in her middle years - going to college, working and writing, and continuing to evolve and learn into her ninth decade, even as she accepts the realities of being 'old'. Candid about everything that matters - love, sex, heartbreak, money, class, religion, mental health, rearing children (and letting them go), reading and writing, ageing - Openhearted is a compelling story about living life in a spirit of curiosity and delight and with a willingness to look for good in others. ___________________ 'By some distance the most courageous, most poignant, most life-affirming memoir I've read in the last twenty years and more' Paul Howard 'Genuinely inspirational. I LOVE ANN INGLE' Marian Keyes 'What a beautiful openhearted, at times broken-hearted memoir ... honest, funny, searingly direct, a wonderful voice ... remarkable' Joe Duffy 'Really beautiful. Searingly honest, astonishingly frank and very, very funny' Maia Dunphy

We are all witnesses of our time, and this is something of a witness to mine.' Something of Myself and Others is a fascinating collection of articles and reflections on the public and private life of one of Ireland's best known journalists. Detailing memorable events in her life, as well as those she has witnessed in Ireland's recent history, Mary Kenny recalls her experiences with humour and charm. In this collection of articles, some of which have appeared previously in a number of newspapers and magazines, Kenny reflects on the people she has known, the places she has been and the experiences that have shaped her. Something of Myself and Others is a wonderfully varied and entertaining read. In it, Mary chronicles her adventures as a young ambitious journalist through to her current personal challenges with illness and loss. She recalls bringing down a Cabinet minister aboard the Queen Mary, introducing Irish president Michael D. Higgins to his wife, interviewing Grace of Monaco and Marlene Dietrich and being complimented by the Queen. She talks with great heart about the absent friends that have influenced her, such as Terry Keane, June Levine and Maeve Binchey. She gives her account of the now infamous trip to Belfast aboard the contraception train, as well as some reflections on culture, religion and Irish society. Alongside stories of the famous faces she has encountered, Mary also writes candidly on the loss of her sister, Ursula and her recent experience as primary carer for her husband, Richard. Something of Myself and Others is not an autobiography. Instead, Mary Kenny has assembled a refreshing collection of articles that are sometimes funny, often poignant and always sharply perceptive, giving a wonderful insight into the life of one of Ireland's most prolific journalists.

Basaglia S International Legacy From Asylum To Community written by Tom Burns and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-28 with Medical categories.

Franco Basaglia (1924-1980) was an Italian psychiatrist and activist who proposed the dismantling of psychiatric hospitals and pioneered new ideas about mental health and its treatment. Basaglia was also one of the principal proponents of Italy's Law 180, which effectively closed down large mental hospitals in Italy. His ideas and his disciples have had a decisive influence in the move away from institutional care in many parts of the world, particularly in continental Europe and South America. However, Basaglia is strikingly absent from the literature in Germanic and Anglophone psychiatry. Most of the literature about Basaglia in the last 40 years has been published by his followers and supporters and has often been largely positive, with little exploration of differing responses or possible limitations of his model. Basaglia's International Legacy: From Asylum to Community provides an overview of current thinking and the international influence of Franco Basaglia. This resource draws on the combined knowledge of clinicians, policy makers, historians, and social scientists, including a handful of Basaglia's collaborators. It provides an in-depth understanding and critical analysis of the various applications of his thinking worldwide. Organised into three broad sections, chapters examine Basaglia's work and influence in Italy; in the 'Basaglian' countries of Europe and South America; and in those countries where his influence has either been rejected or significantly modified. The Editors bring together the contributions and draw out the important messages (both positive and negative) for current clinical practice and development within international mental health services.
