The Embassy Of Cambodia written by Zadie Smith and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-07 with Fiction categories.

Revisiting the terrain of her acclaimed novel NW, The Embassy of Cambodia is another remarkable work of fiction from Zadie Smith. 'The fact is, if we followed the history of every little country in the world -- in its dramatic as well as its quiet times -- we would have no space left in which to live our own lives or apply ourselves to our necessary tasks, never mind indulge in occasional pleasures, like swimming . . . ' First published in the New Yorker, The Embassy of Cambodia is a rare and brilliant story that takes us deep into the life of a young woman, Fatou, domestic servant to the Derawals and escapee from one set of hardships to another. Beginning and ending outside the Embassy of Cambodia, which happens to be located in Willesden, north-west London, Zadie Smith's absorbing, moving and wryly observed story suggests how the apparently small things in an ordinary life always raise larger, more extraordinary questions. 'Its range is lightly immense... a fiction of consequences both global and heart-rendingly intimate' Guardian 'Smith serves up a smasher' Independent Playful... unexpected and absolutely right... Skips to a beat all of its own' Times Praise for NW: 'A triumph . . .modern London is explored in a dazzling portrait . . . every sentence sings' Guardian 'Intensely funny, richly varied, always unexpected. A joyous, optimistic, angry masterpiece. No better English novel will be published this year' Philip Hensher, Daily Telegraph 'Absolutely brilliant . . . So electrically authentic, it reads like surveillance transcripts' Lev Grossman, TIME

The ability to make effective arguments is not only necessary in students’ academic lives, it’s a transferable skill that’s essential to students’ future success as critical thinkers and contributing members of society. But in the here and now, how do we engage students and ensure they understand argument writing’s fundamental components? How do we take them from "Here’s what I think" to "Here’s what I think. Here’s what makes me think that. And here’s why it matters"? This stunning, full-color book by Michael Smith and Jon-Philip Imbrenda shows the way, with ready-to-implement lessons that make argument writing topical and relevant. Students are first asked to form arguments about subjects that matter to them, and then to reflect on the structure of those arguments, a process that provides learners with valuable, reusable structural models. Throughout the book, the authors provide helpful instructional tools, including Literary, nonfiction, and author-created simulated texts that inspire different points of view Essential questions to create a context that rewards argumentation Lessons introducing students to the three essential elements of an argument—claim, data, and warrant—and how to make each effective Questioning probes, semantic differential scales, and other innovative instructional approaches Samples of writing from the authors’ own students, and enlightening details on how this work informed the authors’ subsequent teaching approach Complete with guidance on applying the lessons’ techniques in a broader, unit-wide context, Developing Writers of Argument offers a practical approach for instructing students in this crucial aspect of their lifelong development.

In The Shadow Of The Ivory Tower written by Davarian L Baldwin and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-30 with Social Science categories.

Across America, universities have become big businesses—and our cities their company towns. But there is a cost to those who live in their shadow. Urban universities play an outsized role in America’s cities. They bring diverse ideas and people together and they generate new innovations. But they also gentrify neighborhoods and exacerbate housing inequality in an effort to enrich their campuses and attract students. They maintain private police forces that target the Black and Latinx neighborhoods nearby. They become the primary employers, dictating labor practices and suppressing wages. In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower takes readers from Hartford to Chicago and from Phoenix to Manhattan, revealing the increasingly parasitic relationship between universities and our cities. Through eye-opening conversations with city leaders, low-wage workers tending to students’ needs, and local activists fighting encroachment, scholar Davarian L. Baldwin makes clear who benefits from unchecked university power—and who is made vulnerable. In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower is a wake-up call to the reality that higher education is no longer the ubiquitous public good it was once thought to be. But as Baldwin shows, there is an alternative vision for urban life, one that necessitates a more equitable relationship between our cities and our universities.

When the lovely Carol Chambers asks Atlanta detective Jack Novak to investigate the two-year-old murder of her husband, Novak is more interested in her than in solving a very cold case. Her husband, Don, was found decapitated, and the police never named a suspect. But there's something she never told the police: apparently, Don was a B-52 pilot in Cambodia during the Vietnam War—and while overseas he came upon forbidden treasure. Don and his crew found hundreds of precious stones in a temple guarded by a strange and sadistic Buddhist sect. The crew escaped with the stones and their lives, although several monks were murdered in the process. Carol believes the precious stones have something to do with Don's death; in fact, she thinks the monks have returned for revenge on Don and the rest of his crew. The case piques Novak's curiosity, especially when Carol promises him a share in the stones if he solves the case. When things get hairy, though, Novak realizes this is no game; his life is in serious danger, and if he's not careful, he'll end up as another headless corpse.
