Nightmare On Iwo Jima written by Patrick F. Caruso and has been published by University of Alabama Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-10-07 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

On February 19, 1945, the 4th and 5th Marine Divisions stormed ashore from a naval support force. Among them was green young lieutenant Pat Caruso who became de facto company commander when the five officers ranking him were killed or wounded. He led his rapidly diminishing force steadily forward for the next few days, when a day’s gains were measured in yards. Caruso was eventually wounded himself and was evacuated. Realizing that the heroism of his comrades would be lost by the decimation of his unit, Caruso latched onto any paper he could find and filled every blank space with his memory of the fighting. This edition has a new foreword and index, boasts nine new photographs, and a map of the action. It resumes its place as a classic account of the experience of being in close, direct, and constant contact with a determined enemy at close quarters. Many did not survive; those who did were changed forever.

Iwo Jima: arguably the most violent battle of the Second World War. On February 19th, 1945, U.S. Marines of the 4th and 5th Divisions land on sacred Japanese soil. Thirty-six days later the fighting is over. Almost all of the 20,000 Japanese defenders are dead, and the shattered remains of three Marine Divisions leave Iwo after suffering over 6,000 dead and 15,000 wounded making Iwo Jima the ""Gettysburg of the Pacific."" Iwo; Assault on Hell shows a worms eye view of the fighting on Iwo Jima. Seen from the eyes of the 5th Division Marines who fought and bled there, these interwoven experiences paint a blood mosaic that pays tribute to the courage and bravery of our Marine forefathers, who sacrificed so much for this famous island stepping stone.

The tiny Pacific island of Iwo Jima was the focus of an epic land and sea battle that produced one of the most iconic images of World War II: US Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi, an active volcano where American and Japanese soldiers, desperate to secure the island’s airfields, fought hand to hand and always to the death. In this gripping novel, award-winning author and retired commodore P. T. Deutermann follows a young Navy gunnery officer stationed on the battleship Nevada from the beginning of the battle to its decisive end. Lieutenant Lee Bishop serves in the main plotting room aboard USS Nevada, targeting fourteen-inch shells from the ship’s guns against enemy positions on Iwo Jima called in by frantic Marine spotters ashore. But after the Marines suffer devastating losses of spotting personnel to the Japanese hunting teams sent out specifically to kill them, Bishop volunteers to serve onshore as a replacement, calling in coordinates to target Japanese positions with offshore naval gunships, such as Nevada. But Bishop is completely unprepared for what he witnesses and experiences: a literal hell on earth, during which twenty-six thousand Americans become casualties in desperate and often hand-to-hand fighting with the enemy garrison, men committed to dying for Japan. Bishop goes from the safe, air-conditioned gunnery control spaces of a battleship to the mud, blood, and sheer terror of night fighting against suicidal Japanese who come out of the night and leap into Marine foxholes with samurai swords to slaughter American Marines. The battle culminates on the stinking slopes of the volcano, where Bishop calls in monster projectiles against banzai charges while using a Thompson submachine to save his own life and those of his fellow Marines. Iwo, 26 Charlie is a frighteningly dramatic, utterly authentic novel by an award-winning writer and Navy veteran who is a contemporary master of World War II military fiction.

"Among Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue". This statement by Fleet Admiral Nimitz following the Battle of Iwo Jima succinctly summarizes the degree of effort, dedication, and personal sacrifice required of American servicemen to capture the island. The Japanese defenders also displayed these qualities, but the United States forces prevailed because they combined this effort, dedication, and sacrifice with superior application of basic principles of warfighting. Analysis of the application of these principles will help us understand why the battle developed and ended as it did. To do this, we must first examine the battle itself.
