Aufklärung und Emanzipation stellten das deutschsprachige Judentum vor die Aufgabe, ein modernes jüdisches Selbstverständnis zu entwickeln, das den neuen gesellschaftlichen Anforderungen entsprach. Dabei war das Gebiet der Erziehung einer jener Bereiche, in denen die jüdische Modernisierung zuerst zum Tragen kam. Durch die Neukonzeption des jüdischen Lernens, die stark von transkulturellen Diskursen geprägt war, entstanden neue pädagogische Konzepte und neue Lehrbücher. Als Erziehungsmittel trugen diese einen wichtigen Teil zum Sozialisierungsprozess des sich transformierenden Judentums bei und sind somit zentrale Quellen für die in jener Zeit stattfindende Aushandlung eines neuen jüdischen Selbstverständnisses. Der Sammelband beleuchtet in Überblicksdarstellungen und Einzelstudien die vielfältigen Wechselbeziehungen zwischen pädagogischen, religiösen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen dieser Zeit und konturiert damit die im Hintergrund der jüdischen Modernisierung stehenden Prozesse des Kulturtransfers genauer.

What should one know in order to position oneself vis-à-vis other religions and confessions? What is religious knowledge and how should it be taught? This volume sheds light on educational media in Judaism and Christianity such as catechisms, children’s bibles, and sermons as well as Jewish and Protestant teacher training in 19th-century Germany and explores the methodological potentials of educational media as a source for (inter-)religious history. It reflects on broader processes of knowledge production and the impact of science and scholarship on religious edu-cation and knowledge production within Christian and Jewish contexts. The volume draws on an interdisciplinary conference that took place in 2018 and brought together scholars associated with two transdisciplinary research projects: The German-Israeli research group “Innovation through Tradition? Jewish Educational Media and Cultural Transformation in the Face of Moder-nity”, associated with the German Historical Institute Washington and Tel Aviv University (funded by the German Research Foundation, DFG, 2014–2019), and the LOEWE research hub “Religious Positioning: Modalities and Constellations in Jewish, Christian and Muslim Contexts” at Goethe University Frankfurt and Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (funded by the Hessian Ministry of Science and Art, 2015–2021).

Die deutsch-jüdische Geschichte erscheint hier als "Bestandteil der Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes wie der der Deutschen" (M. A. Meyer), einer Geschichte freilich, in der am Ende alle Hoffnungen der Juden zunichte werden, ihr außerordentlicher Beitrag zur deutschen Kultur geleugnet wird.

Peter Schäfer who celebrated his 60th birthday on 29 June 2003 has left a decidedly firm imprint on the young discipline "Jewish Studies" in Germany, which could only be set up at a German university after the Shoah. For someone directing a “small” academic institution he has managed during his academic career to guide and influence a strikingly large number of students in their scholarly pursuits in the field. The collected essays of this volume encompass quite a variety of topics, whereby the focal points in Peter Schäfer’s own research are not difficult to recognize in the themes chosen by his former students: mysticism and magic are most conspicuous, followed by Rabbinic Judaism and the studies on the Middle Ages and the Early Modern and Modern Periods. Of note is also the fact that the methodological approaches of these contributions are no less manifold than their themes.
