Anti-hero or tragic hero?". J.K. Rowling is one of the most famous authors of our time and she gained this fame by writing the Harry Potter books. They are about the life of a young wizard that has to defeat the most powerful and dark wizard of all time – Lord Voldemort, as it has been said in a prophecy. And this wizard is Harry Potter. He is a student in Hogwarts, a school for wizardry and witchcraft where he learns to control his magical powers. One of his professors is Severus Snape, the poison master. From the first day on, he is unfriendly and unfair to Harry and his friends. Snape is one of the most ambiguous characters in the Harry Potter series, because it is hard to see through his actions that are contradictory most of the time. In the end, after Snape has died, it is revealed he had been on Harry’s side all along. In the wizarding world he his celebrated as a hero, because he risked his own life and spied for Dumbledore to help Harry.

Introduction: Contemporary Research and Thesis Statement In most literature discussing fantasy for children and adults, we are informed about the central position of the fight of good and evil, which is the case within the Harry Potter series of author J.K. Rowling as well. It has been argued by academics that good and evil can be separated from each other because of a strong polarity (cf. Cohen 352) and that the description of scenery, architecture and presented figures are also included to represent the fight between both sides. Imagery that is described in relation to the evil side is always assigned to concepts from similar semantic fields, such as for example "chillness" and "blankness". Dark colours serve for the creation of evil figures by which these can be accurately distinguished from figures of the good side (cf. Meißner, "Phantastik der Gegenwart" 127-133; "Phantasie der Kinder" 34).

He appears to be an archetypical Renaissance figure, a versatile character that contains something of everything within him: “He is the sophisticated thinker and the powerless politician; the resentful child and the sober student; the moral Puritan and the deranged Prince; the witty murderer and the cold-blooded jester.” Since Michael Davies speaks of Hamlet’s supposed renaissance variety “as a compendium of selves” and therefore of a rather “modern man of no fixed identity”, we will in the context of this work examine the question whether Hamlet could be considered an anti-hero by pointing out certain traits of his introverted nature and the significant impact of self-reflection on Hamlet’s behaviour throughout the play.
