An astonishing connection between two of the 19th century’s greatest crimes. A fraudulent doctor, Francis Tumblety, is implicated in both the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and the 1888 Jack the Ripper killings. It seems incredible that Jack the Ripper could have been involved in killing President Lincoln, but the evidence is revealed in this book. We delve into a murky underworld in America’s Gilded Age and the poverty ridden slums of London’s Whitechapel district following the murderous trail left by Tumblety. A flamboyant huckster, well known in the newspaper gossip columns, whose celebrity masked his homicidal tendencies. Arrested over the Lincoln assassination then released while others were hanged on the scaffold. Put behind bars briefly by Scotland over the Jack the Ripper killings but then makes a daring escape. The proof is overwhelming that Tumblety was one of the most dangerous criminals of the 19th century.

Getting Right With Lincoln written by Edward Steers Jr. and has been published by University Press of Kentucky this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-13 with History categories.

Did Abraham Lincoln hate his father so much that he would not visit him on his deathbed or buy him a tombstone? Is it true that Ann Rutledge, who died tragically young, was the real love of his life? Did he order the murder of thirty-eight Dakota Sioux warriors because of his hatred of Native Americans? Noted historian and Lincoln expert Edward Steers Jr. sets the record straight in this engaging and authoritative book, analyzing the facts and clarifying some of the most prominent misconceptions about the sixteenth president's life. He investigates claims that have found a foothold in mainstream lore, ranging from the contention that Lincoln had a troubled and perhaps scandalous early adulthood in Springfield, to more serious attacks on his character, such as the accusation that he was reluctant to emancipate enslaved people and held racist beliefs. Drawing on his background in health science, Steers also examines allegations that Lincoln suffered numerous illnesses -- from endocrine disorders to syphilis. Much of the recent revisionist history about Abraham Lincoln relies on selective sources that provide a false image of the man. His law partner of twenty-one years, close friend, and early biographer William Herndon described Lincoln as "the most shut-mouthed man" he ever knew, and yet volumes have been written on Lincoln's musings, beliefs, and private thoughts in general. His life and deeds have been heavily researched, interpreted, and reinterpreted time and again until the interpretations themselves have become untrustworthy. In this book, Steers relies on primary textual evidence to address each legend at the source and maintains caution when reviewing the potentially biased reminiscences of historic figures close to the president. The result is a fascinating forensic exploration of some of the persistent hoaxes and myths related to America's most revered president.

"Ripper Notes: America Looks at Jack the Ripper" is a collection of essays about the notorious Whitechapel serial killer and related topics. It leads of with a newly discovered and never before republished 1892 interview with Assistant Commissioner Robert Anderson of Scotland Yard. Anderson was a very important figure in the investigations, and made statements later in life that the killer had been identified and put into an asylum. This article is accompanied by a short analysis showing why that is unlikely. Wolf Vanderlinden then gives an in-depth look at the suspects in the 1891 death of prostitute Carrie Brown in New York City, a case long connected by many to the earlier string of Ripper killings in the East End of London. This is followed by coverage of the 2004 U.S. Ripper Conference, including essays by John Hacker ("Jack the Ripper and Technology: Ripperology in the Twenty-First Century") and Stan Russo ("The Strange Case of Dr. Hewitt," which questions why some suspects are treated more seriously than they probably should be) adapted from their presentations there. A number of shorter pieces by various authors follows. Ripper Notes is a nonfiction anthology series covering all aspects of the Jack the Ripper murder case.

"All of history is mystery," Dale L. Walker says, and he proves his point in this lively, humorous--and rational--approach to the West's greatest puzzles. Did Davy Crockett, for example, go down swinging Ol' Betsy, defending the ramparts of the Alamo--or was he captured? Who is buried in Jesse James's grave? Was the man Pat Garrett shot that night really Billy the Kid? How did Black Bart, "the gentleman bandit," disappear? Did Sacajawea, the famous "Bird Woman" who scouted for Lewis and Clark, die twice? The possibilities unfold as Walker brings together little-known facts and the elusive connections that shed light on the biggest enigmas of the American West. This book offers evidence, for the first time, that those responsible for the Whitechapel murders were members of a hit team associated with a centuries-old European occult confederacy dedicated to human sacrifice. This was first mooted by Jim Keith in his 1993 book Secret and Suppressed, and then corroborated in the private papers of a Monsignor who carried out intelligence work for Pope Pius X in the run-up to the outbreak of global conflict in 1914. The priest told of the existence of a Vatican-based cabal of assassins (known to its members by the maxim “Dead Men Carry No Tales”) formed by the infamous Borgias that is in alliance with a Teuton occult group formed in the 9th century. It was from within this unholy alliance that assassins travelled to London to carry out the Ripper murders to “solve a sticky problem for the British Royal Family” (Keith’s Vatican informant). Part of the substantiation for this evidence derives from Joseph Farrell in his recent Hess and the Penguins book for AUP. The evidence also substantiates Keith’s informant’s astonishing claim that the assassins came together in a conference in Basle in 1897 to put the building blocks together for National Socialism and to prepare the blueprint for the Holocaust. For the first time also, the book substantiates a new line of research that suggests that the work of key figures from America and Britain within the nineteenth-century’s highly influential and richly funded Bible Revision movement was associated with the grisly events in London’s East End during 1888’s Autumn of Terror. Topics include: “Mr. Splitfoot”; Whitechapel; Martha; HPB; “Polly”; The Occult Underground; “Dark Annie”; The Occult Establishment; “Long Liz”; The Lady with the Lilacs; From Lilacs to Violets—Mary Kelly; Baconalia; “Rothschild’s” Bible; Basle, 1897; Through the Looking Glass; more.

Aldous Huxley (1894–1963) was the author of nearly fifty books and numerous essays, best known for his dystopian novel Brave New World. Humphry Osmond (1917–2004) was a British-trained psychiatrist interested in the biological nature of mental illness and the potential for psychedelic drugs to treat psychoses, especially schizophrenia. In 1953, Huxley sent an appreciative note to Osmond about an article he and a colleague had published on their experiments with mescaline, which inspired an initial meeting and decade-long correspondence. This critical edition provides the complete Huxley-Osmond correspondence, chronicling an exchange between two brilliant thinkers who explored such subjects as psychedelics, the visionary experience, the nature of mind, human potentialities, schizophrenia, death and dying, Indigenous rituals and consciousness, socialism, capitalism, totalitarianism, power and authority, and human evolution. There are references to mutual friends, colleagues, and eminent figures of the day, as well as details about both men's personal lives. The letters bear witness to the development of mind-altering drugs aimed at discovering the mechanisms of mental illness and eventually its treatment. A detailed introduction situates the letters in their historical, social, and literary context, explores how Huxley and Osmond first coined the term "psychedelic," contextualizes their work in mid-century psychiatry, and reflects on their legacy as contributors to the science of mind-altering substances. Psychedelic Prophets is an extraordinary record of a full correspondence between two leading minds and a testament to friendship, intellectualism, empathy, and tolerance. The fact that these sentiments emerge so clearly from the letters, at a historical moment best known for polarizing ideological conflict, threats of nuclear war, and the rise of post-modernism, reveals much about the personalities of the authors and the persistence of these themes today.
