Pollock and After: The Critical Debate brings together key writings on debates about Abstract Expressionism and Modernist art history. It is an essential resource for understanding post-war American art and culture. The second edition has been fully revised and updated in response to new critical approaches to post-war American art. It includes nine new articles and a substantial overview essay by Francis Frascina. Articles are grouped into three parts, each with an introduction by Francis Frascina. Part One includes two foundational articles by the influential Modernist critic, Clement Greenberg, and represents the debate about Greenberg's work, with contributions by T.J. Clark and Michael Fried. Part Two focuses on revisionist writers, who questioned established ideas about Modernist art history, examining the relationship between Abstract Expressionism and the politics of McCarthyism and the Cold War. The third part, which is new to the volume, is devoted to recent developments of revisionist critiques. Contributors explore the work of Greenberg's contemporaries, the relationship between critical and commercial responses to Abstract Expressionism, and perceptions of cultural value in the 1940s and 1950s, and challenge assumptions about ethnicity, gender and sexuality in the construction of the 'post-war American artist'.

"With great originality and scholarship, Amelia Jones maps out an extraordinary history of body art over the last three decades and embeds it in the theoretical terrain of postmoderism. The result is a wonderful and permissive space in which the viewer...can wander"...-Moira Roth, Trefethen professor of art history, Mills College.

The Social Construction Of Management written by Nancy Harding and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-06-01 with Business & Economics categories.

What is management and how do the people who become managers take on a managerial identity? How does text inform the manager's identity? From cultural studies we understand that the relationship between text and reader is not passive but that each one works upon the other, and that text is active in forming the identity of the reader. This books is the first to analyse how many management textbooks construct their readers. It analyses management textbooks published since the 1950s and shows they construct a world in which chaos is kept at bay only by strong management, and in which strong management is based upon the rationality of modernity. This book exposes and analyses such claims-to-truths, and theorizes their arguments using the work of Butler and Foucault, the sociology of scientific knowledge, critical legal studies, art history and queer theory. By revealing a postmodern turn in management textbooks, The Social Construction of Management is both a critical and empirical study that explores the constitution of managerial identities in the age of mass education in management. An exciting contribution to the growing body of knowledge within critical management studies, this book challenges the way we think about organizations and their management, and about management education as a whole. This is thought provoking reading for anyone studying management, or working in the managerial organization.

Revised and restructured, this second edition of Modern Art traces the historical and contemporary contexts for understanding modern art movements, and the theories that influenced and attempted to explain them. Its radical approach foregoes the chronological approach to art movements in favour of looking at the ways in which art has been understood. The editors investigate the main developments in art interpretation and draw examples from a wide range of genres including painting, sculpture, photography, installation and performance art. This second edition has been fully updated to include many more examples of recent art practice, as well as an expanded glossary and comprehensive marginal notes providing definitions of key terms. Extensively illustrated with a wide range of visual examples, Modern Art is the essential textbook for students of art history.

Jackson Pollack written by Claude Cernuschi and has been published by HarperCollins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-05-28 with Architecture categories.

"This concise study of Jackson Pollock provides a reliable survey of his life and work and an understanding of his paintings--their origins, meanings, and influence. Unlike other books on Pollock that deal extensively with his life or with formal analysis of his works, Cernuschi's is broadly interpretive, discussing and explaining concerns and meanings crucial to an understanding of Pollock's paintings." "The first part of the book surveys Pollock's life and work with particular attention to the artist's intentions and the interpretation of abstraction. The second part deals with the issues raised by Pollock's art above and beyond his intentions and how these issues intersect with the work of his contemporaries and with other intellectual currents. The final chapter discusses Pollock's influence and the importance of criticism in shaping this influence. It also deals with the problems of defining modernism and postmodernism." "Thoughtful and accessible, Cernuschi's study explains the complexity and meaning of Pollock's art for anyone interested in twentieth-century art and the pivotal position of Jackson Pollock in art since 1945. There are notes, a selected bibliography, and an index."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

This publication contains four texts on art criticism of the abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock. The first discusses the first critical approach to Pollock by the critic Clement Greenberg during Pollock's lifetime. The second studies Pollock's formalist traits through their formulation in the texts of Greenberg and M. Fried, with the objective of revealing certain mechanisms of this criticism which is responsible for having written much of the history of recent American art. The third inquires into the pictorial form of Pollock's work, with the aim of bringing out a critical dimension which seems to have been underplayed in the leading interpretations of his work, particularly in works of 1947 to 1951. The final text analyzes the attitude of the magazine Artforum toward Pollock.

Abstract Expressionism written by David Shapiro and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-03-30 with Art categories.

Abstract Expressionism was the dominant movement in experimental American painting from the 1940s through the early 1960s. This book is a collection of articles, reviews, and essays that chronicle the critical history of the movement from its inception to the present. Drawing on a range of sources, including newspapers, magazines, and exhibition catalogues, the original debates about the validity of "action painting" are dramatically illustrated. The articles selected for the volume include classic statements from the most influential and prolific critics, including Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg, and Hilton Kramer. The editors have also included contributions of iconoclasts from the 1950s and 1960s such as Leon Golub and John Canaday to suggest the full range of critical discussion. Six representative artists are the subject of extended sections that include biographical chronologies, reviews, and the artists' own comments: Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Franz Kline, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko.
