This publication contains four texts on art criticism of the abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock. The first discusses the first critical approach to Pollock by the critic Clement Greenberg during Pollock's lifetime. The second studies Pollock's formalist traits through their formulation in the texts of Greenberg and M. Fried, with the objective of revealing certain mechanisms of this criticism which is responsible for having written much of the history of recent American art. The third inquires into the pictorial form of Pollock's work, with the aim of bringing out a critical dimension which seems to have been underplayed in the leading interpretations of his work, particularly in works of 1947 to 1951. Abstract Expressionism was the dominant movement in experimental American painting from the 1940s through the early 1960s. This book is a collection of articles, reviews, and essays that chronicle the critical history of the movement from its inception to the present. Drawing on a range of sources, including newspapers, magazines, and exhibition catalogues, the original debates about the validity of "action painting" are dramatically illustrated. The articles selected for the volume include classic statements from the most influential and prolific critics, including Clement Greenberg, Harold Rosenberg, and Hilton Kramer.
