The patriarch Jacob functions as the main character in Jubilees, one of the most important early Jewish texts outside the Bible. This study investigates two important connections made by the author of Jubilees, Jacob and the Torah, and Jacob and the Abrahamic Promise (Gen 12:1–3 and parallels), both of which play an important role in Jubilees. Jacob functions as the perfect Israelite who follows the Deuteronomic commandments (addressed to Israel in the second person singular) to the utmost, and thus exemplifies the "holy seed" or "rest" of Israel, who will also inherit the Abrahamic Promise when they fulfil the Torah as Jacob did. Esau functions as an archetype of the apostate Israelite who will be left outside of the Promise. The study illuminates the early reception history of the Abrahamic Promise and its close connection with Deuteronomy. It gives background for scholars of early Judaism and Christianity dealing with the reception of the Law and the Promise as well as of the parting of Judaism and Christianity, where different readings of the patriarchal stories were influential (e.g., Sifre Deuteronomy).

Did Jesus claim to be the bridegroom? If so, what did he mean by this claim? When Jesus says that the wedding guests should not fast while the bridegroom is with them (Mark 2:19), he is claiming to be a bridegroom by intentionally alluding to a rich tradition from the Hebrew Bible. By eating and drinking with tax collectors and other sinners, Jesus was inviting people to join him in celebrating the eschatological banquet. While there is no single text in the Hebrew Bible or the literature of the Second Temple Period which states the messiah is like a bridegroom, the elements for such a claim are present in several texts in Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Hosea. By claiming that his ministry was an ongoing wedding celebration he signaled the end of the Exile and the restoration of Israel to her position as the Lord's beloved wife. This book argues that Jesus combined the tradition of an eschatological banquet with a marriage metaphor in order to describe the end of the Exile as a wedding banquet.

The Book of Jubilees or as it is sometimes called "the little Genesis " purports to be a revelation given by God to Moses through the medium of an angel and containing a history divided up into jubilee-periods of forty-nine years from the creation to the coming of Moses. Though the actual narrative of events is only carried down to the birth and early career of Moses its author envisages the events of a later time and in particular certain events of special interest at the time when he wrote which was probably in the latter years of the second century B.C. perhaps in the reign of the Maccabean prince John Hyrcanus. Though distinguished from the Pentateuch proper it presupposes and supplements the latter. The actual narrative embraces material contained in the whole of Genesis and part of Exodus. But the legal regulations given presuppose other parts of the Pentateuch especially the so-called "Priest's Code" and certain details in the narrative are probably intended to apply to events that occurred in the author's own time the latter years of the second century B.C. The author himself seems to have contemplated the speedy inauguration of the Messianic Age and in this respect his point of view is similar to that of the Apocalyptic writers. But his work though it contains one or two passages of an apocalyptic character is quite unlike the typical apocalypses. It is largely narrative based upon the historical narratives in Genesis and Exodus interspersed with legends and emphasizing certain legal practices. But his main object was to inculcate a reform in the regulation of the calendar and festivals in place of the intercalated lunar calendar which he condemns in the strongest language. Rife with incest, adultery, rape, and murder, the biblical story of Jacob and his children must have troubled ancient readers. They were the founders of the nation of Israel. Yet, by any standard, this was a family with problems. Jacob’s oldest son Reuben is said to have slept with his father’s concubine Bilhah. The next two sons, Simeon and Levi, murdered all the men of a nearby city as revenge for the rape of their sister. Judah, the fourth son, had sexual relations with his own daughter-in-law. Meanwhile, jealous of their younger sibling Joseph, the brothers conspired to kill him; they later relented and merely sold him into slavery. In The Ladder of Jacob, renowned biblical scholar James Kugel reveals how ancient biblical interpreters often fixed on a little detail in the Bible’s wording to “deduce” something not openly stated in the narrative. They concluded that Simeon and Levi were justified in their mass slaughter, and that Judah was the unfortunate victim of alcoholism. These are among the earliest examples of ancient biblical interpretation (midrash). They are found in the Book of Jubilees, the Aramaic Levi Document, the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, and other noncanonical works. Through careful analysis of these retellings, Kugel reconstructs how ancient interpreters worked.

Almost all scholars have viewed the book of Jubilees as the work of a single author, applying to the book methods of analysis determined primarily by its literary genre, Rewritten Bible. This study suggests a new approach, in light of numerous contradictions between the rewritten stories on the one hand, and the juxtaposed legal passages and chronological framework on the other. It is suggested here that the editor of Jubilees adopted extant reworked sources, and added his own legal and chronological framework. This proposed literary-critical method is highly significant for the study of the book’s worldview, as is demonstrated by the analysis of passages in Jubilees that relate to the origins of evil and of law in the world.
