Among the three most renowned Flemish Baroque painters - Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens - Jacques Jordaens is undoubtedly the least studied, and therefore the least understood. He is often reduced to the role of talented genre painter, author of homely scenes like The King Drinks and As the Old Sing, So the Young Pipe. Yet the image of Jordaens as a poor man's Rubens - however beloved - obscures the better part of his extensive and varied oeuvre. This book elucidates the more erudite side of Jordaens' production by zeroing in on a single theme, the Allegory of Fertility, principal versions of which are held in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels and the Wallace Collection in London, respectively. The essays in this volume examine these canvases jointly and severally, exploring the complex relationship between the two paintings and their genesis. Curators from the two museums, restorers, Jordaens scholars, and university professors wielding the latest analytic techniques examine the two works from the perspective of their respective methodologies. Their multidisciplinary investigations are moreover richly illustrated - not only by images of paintings themselves, but also by preliminary drawings, prints, macro photos, X-rays, paint-layer analyses, and special digital imaging and analysis of the canvas weave. This study explores all aspects of Jacob Jordaens's extensive activity as a designer of tapestry and his prominence in this field. It places Jordaens within the context of design for and the manufacture of tapestry during the seventeenth century in Flanders when it was considered the most important form of textile and an item of luxury. The publication includes a discussion of Jordaens's preparation for work in this field, his approach to design, his patrons and his relationship to contemporaries in the same area of artistic endeavour. The six major series designed by Jordaens - The History of Alexander the Great, The Life of Odysseus, Scenes from Country Life, The Riding School, Proverbs and the Life of Charlemagne - are thouroughly analyzed with regard to surviving visual material and written statements, the interpretation and content of the narrative scenes and the significance of the themes for the seventeenth century. A catalogue raisonne provides data on all the tapestries woven after Jordaens's designs with the preparatory works for them, including drawings, modelli and cartoons. The initial studies in watercolour are particularly illuminating about his unusual sensitivity for this type of work. The tapestry weavers and various sets they produced after his designs are also established. Jordaens was especially prolific in the area of tapestry design and it is shown that some of his most innovative and sophisticated inventions were produced for tapestry. His effort in this area was one of the most unique in Flanders and his achievement remains distinct.

The author possesses a drawing (73 cm. high by 98 cm. wide) in red-and blackchalk, heightened with a little blue-green and white watercolour paint, in which the same subject is treated by Jordaens, but in a very different way. Most of the accessories have been retained, but the groups and some of the personages have been arranged differently. It is the largest drawing that Jordaens or any other Flemish painter ever made. In the Albertina at Vienna there is a drawing which is a copy of the group of five persons to the right in this picture. SAINT Ivo--BRUSSELS. The picture of Saint Ivo, receiving the poor pleaders, which is to be found in the Brussels Museum, is dated.the same year, 1645. The holy lawyer stands in the centre of his office. He is enveloped in a red, velvet toga edged with ermine; hair and beard are long and gray. He raises the first finger of his right hand, as he speaks to the poor who have come to beg for his assistance. These are standing to the right, near the entrance to the room; they are a mother, kneeling, and holding a child who strokes a dog which is jumping up against the woman; then a peasant in a bluish-green blouse, his cap in his hands which he extends in supplication; a peasant woman wearing a straw hat, and next to her two children. To the left three clerks are seated at a table which is covered which a red cloth. On some shelves over their heads are books and registers, a bag with money, and office utensils. A dog is coming down the steps leading to the lower part of the room. The scene takes place in a large room in the style of the time, with a window in the centre of the background and an open door to the right. A flood of light streams into the room past the window, and falls warm...
