'(V)erdichtete Leben' meint den Status von (auto)biographischer Literatur zwischen wirklichem' Leben und seiner literarischen Funktionalisierung. Unter diesem Aspekt widmet sich der aktuelle Tagungsband der Oswald von Wolkenstein-Gesellschaft der Frage nach der Relevanz von (Auto)biographie als Gattung und Textbestandteil im Mittelalter und in der Fruhen Neuzeit. Die Untersuchungen beginnen bei den hofischen Romanen Hartmanns von Aue und der Frage nach den Gonnern der Artusromane, konzentrieren sich auf die Lieddichtung (u.a. Walther von der Vogelweide, Neidhart bzw. Neithart Fuchs und naturlich Oswald von Wolkenstein), beziehen die geistliche Literatur, und hier vor allem die sogenannte deutsche Mystik' (Mechthild von Magdeburg, Heinrich Seuse, und noch Dorothea Beier), auch anhand der Hagiographie ein, blicken in die Romania (Christine de Pizan) und analysieren mittelalterliche und fruhneuzeitliche Lebensbeschreibungen (Ulrich von Liechtenstein, Hans Schiltberger, Georg von Ehingen, Gotz von Berlichingen, Thomas Platter und Kaiser Maximilian I. ). Eine Fulle an generellen Uberlegungen zum Thema gilt u.a. der Sangspruchdichtung, der hofischen Selbstinszenierung, der geistlichen Exempelhaftigkeit des eigenen Lebens, der Funktion ritterlicher Kampfe in der Literatur und den literarischen Inszenierungen der Lebenssituation junger Ritter.

Beards and Texts explores the literary portrayal of beards in medieval German texts from the mid-twelfth to the early sixteenth centuries. It argues that as the pre-eminent symbol for masculinity the beard played a distinctive role throughout the Middle Ages in literary discussions of such major themes as majesty and humanity. At the same time beards served as an important point of reference in didactic poetry concerned with wisdom, teaching and learning, and in comedic texts that were designed to make their audiences laugh, not least by submitting various figure-types to the indignity of having their beards manhandled. Four main chapters each offer a reading of a work or poetic tradition of particular significance (Pfaffe Konrad’s Rolandslied; Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Willehalm; ‘Sangspruchdichtung’; Heinrich Wittenwiler’s Ring), before examining cognate material of various kinds, including sources or later versions of the same story, manuscript variants and miniatures and further relevant beard-motifs from the same period. The book concludes by reviewing the portrayal of Jesus in vernacular German literature, which represents a special test-case in the literary history of beards. As the first study of its kind in medieval German studies, this investigation submits beard-motifs to sustained and detailed analysis in order to shed light both on medieval poetic techniques and the normative construction of masculinity in a wide range of literary genres.

Two opposing views of the future in the Middle Ages dominate recent historical scholarship. According to one opinion, medieval societies were expecting the near end of the world and therefore had no concept of the future. According to the other opinion, the expectation of the near end created a drive to change the world for the better and thus for innovation. Intimate Reading: Textual Encounters in Medieval Women’s Visions and Vitae explores the ways that women mystics sought to make their books into vehicles for the reader’s spiritual transformation. Jessica Barr argues that the cognitive work of reading these texts was meant to stimulate intensely personal responses, and that the very materiality of the book can produce an intimate encounter with God. She thus explores the differences between mystics’ biographies and their self-presentation, analyzing as well the complex rhetorical moves that medieval women writers employ to render their accounts more effective. Etymology and the European Lexicon constitutes the proceedings of the 14th Fachtagung of the Indogermanische Gesellschaft, held in Copenhagen 17-22 September 2012. The choice of etymology as the general theme of the conference was partly motivated by a natural wish to take up this fascinating field for new discussion more than thirty years after the magnificent volume Lautgeschichte und Etymologie following the 6th Fachtagung in Vienna 1978. Another reason was the research focus characterizing the Indo-European section at the University of Copenhagen since 2008 where we had the privilege to receive funding for a five-year project, Roots of Europe - language, culture, and migrations. Etymology is the obvious link between language and the outside world, and with an increasing interest in prehistoric migrations and language contacts, we felt confident that the conference would shed new light on the processes eventually leading to the linguistic landscape of present-day Europe. Among the 43 contributions, fitting neatly within the Rahmenthema, a rich variety of subjects are covered, from the etymological interpretation of specific words of Indo-European extraction to lexical evidence for the disintegration of the language family, loan word relations between Indo-European and non-Indo-European languages and the basic concepts of historical semantics. The languages under discussion include not only all the Indo-European branches, but also the assumed substrata found in the lexicon and in toponyms all over Europe. The volume thus marks the beginning of a new, focused investigation of the layers the European lexicon seen in a cultural context which will undoubtedly flourish in years to come with the combined efforts of linguists, prehistoric archaeologists and geneticists.
