From Africa To Jamaica written by Audra A. Diptee and has been published by University Press of Florida this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-18 with History categories.

Rich with historical sketches of the life and experiences of slaves in Africa, on slave ships, and in Jamaica, this volume illustrates the way enslaved Africans lived and helped to shape Jamaican society in the three decades before British abolition of the slave trade. Audra Diptee's in-depth investigations reveal unexpected insights into the demographics of those captured in Africa and legally transported on British slave ships. For example, there is a commonly held belief that slave traders had a preference for adult males. In fact, the practicalities of slave raiding meant that women, children, and large groups of the elderly were particularly vulnerable during raids and were more often captured and made available for sale in the Caribbean. From Africa to Jamaica offers a new look at the Atlantic slave trade in its final years, fleshing out the historical portrait of the African men, women, and children who were sold in Jamaica and were thus among the last of the enslaved to put their stamp on Jamaican society. There is no comparable study that takes such a comprehensive approach, looking at both the African and Jamaican sides of the trade system.

Victorian Jamaica explores the extraordinary surviving archive of visual representation and material objects to provide a comprehensive account of Jamaican society during Queen Victoria's reign over the British Empire, from 1837 to 1901. In their analyses of material ranging from photographs of plantation laborers and landscape paintings to cricket team photographs, furniture, and architecture, as well as a wide range of texts, the contributors trace the relationship between black Jamaicans and colonial institutions; contextualize race within ritual and performance; and outline how material and visual culture helped shape the complex politics of colonial society. By narrating Victorian history from a Caribbean perspective, this richly illustrated volume—featuring 270 full-color images—offers a complex and nuanced portrait of Jamaica that expands our understanding of the wider history of the British Empire and Atlantic world during this period. Jamaicans, like others around the world, often experience a tugging at the heart that can only be assuaged by pleasant memories. In her collection of old Jamaican proverbs, Edna Bennett shares the powerful messages and folk wisdom of the Jamaican people, conveying not only the mellowness of nostalgia, but also the gentleness of the island culture. Led by a desire to keep her culture alive, Bennett urges others to take five, cock up yu foot, and member what yu old people used to say as she offers collective wisdom presented in Jamaican dialect with English translations. Unforgettable sayings gathered from over three hundred years of Jamaican history include ban yu belly (be prepared for hardships), cotton tree fall dung, nanny goat jump over it (when the mighty falls, the humblest may take advantage of him), and yu se man face, yu nuh se im heart (you cannot tell a mans true feelings by the look on his face). More Jamaica Old-Time Sayings will spur memories, transport Jamaicans back to the roots of their culture, and encourage others to not live their lives like a kitchen without a knife, but to focus on the whetstone of Jamaican wisdom.
