Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Pages: 23. Chapters: Black Chiney, Byron Lee, Chinese Jamaicans, Clive Chin, Douglas Sang Hue, Joseph Hoo Kim, Karin Taylor, Leslie Kong, Michael Lee-Chin, Mona Hammond, Patrick Chung, Phil Chen, Sean Paul, Staceyann Chin, Supa Dups, Tami Chynn, Tessanne Chin, Vincent "Randy" Chin. Excerpt: Chinese Jamaicans are the descendants of migrants from China to Jamaica. Early migrants came in the 19th century; there was another wave of migration in the 1980s and 1990s. Many of the descendants of early migrants have moved abroad, primarily to Canada and the United States. Most Chinese Jamaicans are Hakka and can trace their origin to the Chinese labourers that came to Jamaica in the mid-19th to early 20th centuries. The British parliament made a study of prospects for Chinese migration to the West Indies in 1811, and in 1843 made an attempt to recruit Chinese workers to come to Jamaica, British Guiana, and Trinidad, but nothing came of it. The two earliest ships of Chinese migrant workers to Jamaica arrived in 1854, the first directly from China, the second composed of onward migrants from Panama; they were contracted for plantation work. A further 200 would arrive in the years up until 1870, mostly from other Caribbean islands. Later, in 1884, a third wave of 680 Chinese migrants would arrive; with the exception of a few from Sze Yup, most of these were Hakka people from Dongguan, Huiyang, and Bao'an. This third wave of migrants would go on to bring more of their relatives over from China. From 1910, Chinese immigrants were required to pay a 30 deposit and pass a written test to demonstrate that they could write 50 words in three different languages; the restrictions on Chinese migrants were tightened even further in 1931, but relaxed again by 1947 due to lobbying by the Chinese consulate. The 1943 census showed 12,394 Chinese residing in...

Finding Samuel Lowe written by Paula Williams Madison and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-14 with Family & Relationships categories.

“Told through an intimate family portrait . . . a moving account of a vivid historic migration; an unyielding and dogged journey of the human spirit.” —Walter Mosley, New York Times–bestselling author Now an award–winning film directed by Jeanette Kong This powerful debut tells the story of Paula Williams Madison’s Chinese grandfather, Samuel Lowe. He became romantically involved with a Jamaican woman, Paula’s grandmother, and they lived together modestly with their daughter in his Kingston dry goods store. In 1920 his Chinese soon-to-be wife arrived to set up a “proper” family. When he requested to take his three-year-old daughter with him, Paula’s jealous grandmother made sure that Lowe never saw his child again. That began an almost one-hundred-year break in their family. Years later, the arrival of her only grandchild raising questions about family and legacy, Paula decided to search for Samuel Lowe’s descendants in China. With Finding Samuel Lowe, Paula has produced an emotional memoir that travels from Toronto to Jamaica to China. Using old documents, digital records, and referrals from the insular and interrelated Chinese-Jamaican community, she found three hundred long-lost relatives in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, China. She even located documented family lineage that traces back three thousand years to 1006 BC. Her wonderfully warm elders, all born in Jamaica and raised in China, shared the history and accomplishments of the Lowes in the East and the West, as well as the hardships and persecution suffered by her capitalist grandfather during the Communist era and the Cultural Revolution. Documented in Finding Samuel Lowe, Paula’s remarkable journey “will produce more OMG moments than any prime-time drama on cable or Netflix could ever hope to elicit” (Essence).

The Chinese In The Caribbean written by Andrew R. Wilson and has been published by Markus Wiener Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with History categories.

The history of the Caribbean is a history of migrations. The peoples of the region came as conquerors and planters, slaves and indentured laborers from all parts of the globe. Each group contributed to the social fabric, culture, and commerce of the region. The Chinese diaspora has spread Chinese people and culture around the world, including to the Caribbean, where Chinese exist both as distinct ethnic groups within Caribbean societies and as shapers of unique Caribbean cultures. This book describes not merely the arrival and experience of Chinese in the Caribbean but also the ways in which Chinese have adapted to and altered the region. Included are the histories of Chinese people in Cuba, Jamaica, Panama, and the British West Indies, their arrival as indentured laborers, the discrimination they suffered and overcame, their slow rise to economic independence and success, their contribution to art, theater, cuisine, and literature, their roles in the region's national revolutions, their place in post-colonial politics, and the subsequent remigrations of individuals, families, and entire communities to North America.
