James Freeman Clarke was born on April 4, 1810 in New Hampshire. He was well educated, attending Harvard College, then Harvard Divinity School. He studied to be a minister in the Unitarian faith, taking the pulpit in Louisville, Kentucky. Seeing firsthand the horrors of slavery, he became a vocal abolitionist. He wrote a great deal, crafting dozens of articles, over two-dozen books, and more than 100 pamphlets. Clarke was interested in many things, to the enrichment of his congregations, including exploring eastern religions. He was also influenced by utopian writings and communities, and even went so far as to purchase the site of one, Brook Farm. He ended up giving the space to the US during the Civil War, where it was renamed Camp Andrew and used for training. This new edition is dedicated to Rev. Dr. Robert M. Hardies, minister of All Souls Unitarian Church in Washington, and able leader of social causes.

Excerpt from James Freeman Clarke, 1892: Autobiography, Diary and Correspondence My father, Samuel Clarke, was an only child. His fa ther, Samuel Clarke, had one sister (hepzibah Clarke, afterward Mrs. Swan), but no brother. Both were born in Boston. My great-grandfather, Barnabas Clarke, was born in Harwich, on Cape Cod, and was for some years a shipmaster. Afterward he became a merchant in Boston, marrying Hepzibah Barrett in 1748. Barnabas Clarke was a lineal descendant of Thomas Clarke, who is reported, by what Thacher calls a well received tradition in Plymouth, to have been the mate of the Mayflower, and the first who landed on Clarke's Island in Plymouth harbor. If so, he returned to England with the vessel, for he came over as a settler in the Anne, in July, 1623. He lived in Plymouth, Har wich, and Boston. He died in Plymouth, aged ninety eight, in the year 1697, and his grave and gravestone may be seen on the summit of Burying-ground Hill. “Psychologically rich. . . . Matteson’s book restores the heroism of [Fuller’s] life and work.”—The New Yorker A brilliant writer and a fiery social critic, Margaret Fuller (1810–1850) was perhaps the most famous American woman of her generation. Outspoken and quick-witted, idealistic and adventurous, she became the leading female figure in the transcendentalist movement, wrote a celebrated column of literary and social commentary for Horace Greeley’s newspaper, and served as the first foreign correspondent for an American newspaper. While living in Europe she fell in love with an Italian nobleman, with whom she became pregnant out of wedlock. In 1848 she joined the fight for Italian independence and, the following year, reported on the struggle while nursing the wounded within range of enemy cannons. Amid all these strivings and achievements, she authored the first great work of American feminism: Woman in the Nineteenth Century. Despite her brilliance, however, Fuller suffered from self-doubt and was plagued by ill health. John Matteson captures Fuller’s longing to become ever better, reflected by the changing lives she led.
