In seinen Indianerromanen stellt Cooper die Beziehung der Angloamerikaner zu den Indianern dar und entwirft darüber hinaus ein Bild des Indianers, das am Nachhaltigsten die Vorstellung vom typischen Indianer in der Literatur geprägt hat. Hierbei ist Cooper einerseits der europäischen Aufklärung verpflichtet, die den noble savage "erfand". Andererseits greift Cooper auch das puritanische Feindbild des Indianers, den satanic savage, auf. Im Ganzen präsentiert Cooper ein stereotypisierendes Bild des Indianers, indem er ihn unter die simple Dichotomie des "guten" und des "bösen" Indianers subsumiert. Dennoch problematisiert Cooper bestimmte Klischees des Fremden, indem er einzelne Indianer individualisiert. Hierbei wird zunächst auf die Traditionen und Quellen eingegangen, denen Coopers Indianerdarstellung verpflichtet ist. Dabei fiktionalisierte er historische Ereignisse, indem er sie in die tradierten Formen einer Romanhandlung umgoss und von der Ebene des individuellen Erlebens her beleuchtete. Hierbei bekannte sich Cooper nicht nur zu einem genuin amerikanischen Schauplatz (setting), sondern erstritt mit seinen indianischen Protagonisten die Literaturwürdigkeit der nordamerikanischen Ureinwohner. Im Rahmen seines umfangreichen Werkes stellen vor allem die Leatherstocking Tales den amerikanischen Mythos schlechthin dar und bilden darüber hinaus den Beginn der Indianerliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts. Coopers Indianerfiguren wurden infolge der breiten Rezeption sowohl in Amerika als auch in Europa zum Inbegriff des Roten Mannes .
