Excavations of Maya burial vaults at Palenque, Mexico, half a century ago revealed what was then the most extraordinary tomb finding of the pre-Columbian world; its discovery has been crucial to an understanding of the dynastic history and ideology of the ancient Maya. Over the years, new analytical tools introduced uncertainties regarding earlier interpretations of the findings, and a reanalysis of the remains of the ruler JanaabÕ Pakal using contemporary methodologies has led to new interpretations of former accounts of his life and death. This volume communicates the broad scope of applied interdisciplinary research conducted on the Pakal remains to provide answers to old disputes over the accuracy of both skeletal and epigraphic studies, along with new questions in the field of Maya dynastic research. Contributions by scholars in epigraphy, anthropology, and bioarchaeology bring to light new evidence regarding the rulerÕs age, clarify his medical history and the identification of the remains found with him, reevaluate his role in life, and offer modern insights into ritual and sacrificial practices associated with Pakal. The book leads readers through the history of PakalÕs discovery, skeletal analysis, and interpretation of Maya biographies, and also devotes considerable attention to the tomb of the ÒRed QueenÓ discovered at the site. Findings from the new Transition Analysis aging method, histomorphometric analysis, and taphonomic imagery are presented to shed new light on the perplexing question of PakalÕs age at death. Royal Maya life and death histories from the written record are also analyzed from a regional perspective to provide a broad panorama of the twisted power politics of rulersÕ families and the entangled genealogies of the Maya Classic period. A benchmark in biological anthropology, this volume reconsiders assumptions concerning the practices and lives of Maya rulers, posing the prospect that researchers too often find what they expect to find. In presenting an updated study of a well-known personage, it also offers innovative approaches to the biocultural and interdisciplinary re-creation of Maya dynastic history.

En 1952 Alberto Ruz Lhuillier descubrió en Palenque la tumba de K’inich Janaab’ Pakal, el más grande soberano de aquella antigua ciudad maya, además del rico ajuar con el que había sido ataviado: orejeras, anillos, pulseras, complejos collares y adornos, así como una magnífica máscara de mosaico, todo ello tallado en jade verde de distintas tonalidades. El descubrimiento fue tal que para el otoño de 1953 varias piezas ya eran exhibidas en el Museo Nacional de Antropología de la Ciudad de México. A finales de 2001, casi 50 años después, y a propósito de un nuevo proyecto museográfico, Laura Filloy y un equipo multidisciplinario se dieron a la tarea de estudiar y restaurar las piezas encontradas en la tumba. Así pues, desde una perspectiva holística, y apoyándose en la epigrafía, la historia del arte, la antropología física, la arqueología y la iconografía, Filloy analiza el sepulcro del Templo de las Inscripciones y detalla cada aspecto del conjunto funerario. Además, presenta una historia de vida del gobernante, traza sus líneas de parentesco y analiza las obras que le dieron renombre. La autora contrasta, también, el trabajo de Ruz Lhuillier con las intervenciones previas en la ciudad, hace un balance de su labor en el sitio, ofrece un panorama de los descubrimientos realizados hasta el momento y esboza los derroteros futuros de la investigación científica en Palenque.

Takes up anew the riddles within a number of Maya hieroglyphic inscriptions first recognised by Floyd Lounsbury. Gerardo Aldana unpacks these mathematical riddles using an approach grounded in a reading of the texts made possible by recent advances in decipherment. Using a history of science methodology, he expands upon (and sometimes questions) the foundational work of archaeoastronomers. Aldana follows three lines of investigation: a reading of the hieroglyphic inscriptions of the Classic period (ad250-900), mathematical analysis to recover Classic Maya astronomical practice, and a historiography of Maya astronomy. During troubled times in Palenque, Aldana contends, Kan Balam II devised a means to preserve the legitimacy of his ruling dynasty. He celebrated a re-creation of the city as a contemporary analogue of a mythical Creation on three levels: monumental construction for a public audience, artistic patronage for an elite audience, and a secret mathematical astronomical language only for rulers-elect. Discussing all of these efforts, Aldana focuses on the recovery of the secret language and its historical context.

Paris Monographs in American Archaeology 34 The city of Palenque achieved its greatest splendour in the Late Classic when it became one of the foremost centres in the Maya world. During the reign of K'inich Janaab' Pakal (A.D. 615-683) the Temple of the Inscriptions, which later served as his sepulchre and commemorative monument, was built. In 1952, Alberto Ruz Lhuillier discovered the funerary chamber in the Temple of the Inscriptions. Based on the reports from the 1950s, photographs taken at the time of the discovery, work published over the past half century, and the analysis of objects that composed the funerary furnishings, this research proposes a holistic revision of the funerary complex. The funerary furnishings, the manufacturing technique and technical sequence employed to create such pieces were studied; the geographic location of the sources of the raw materials was proposed. Finally, the function of each object and its probable significance were discussed.
