A major part of Jane Austen¿s life experience was gained in Kent during prolonged holidays that afforded much happiness as well as inspiration and material for her novels. Jane¿s family were from Kent and many of her relatives lived in the county. She visited them here while still a young girl and it was later in Kent she gained detailed knowledge of the country-house life of her time. Jane¿s paternal ancestry can be traced back through seven generations of yeoman farmers who had established themselves in the Weald of Kent over a period of two-and-a-half centuries. Jane¿s father, the Reverend George Austen was born in Tonbridge and spent his formative years in this ancient town on the River Medway. Our first knowledge of Jane herself being in Kent is when she was twelve-and-a-half and stayed for a month in the Sevenoaks home of her ninety-year-old Great Uncle. Jane¿s brother Edward, born in 1767, was later adopted by distant Kentish cousins. This event was ultimately to provide Jane with great opportunities to explore the county and its social life. Francis, the oldest of Jane¿s two sailor brothers, met and married a Kentish girl whilst stationed in Ramsgate. This further extended Jane¿s opportunity for travel. As well as being a guide to the Kentish places significant in the Austen family history, this book is also an exploration of the locations Jane knew personally. The journey takes us to pretty villages, pleasant market towns and the historic cities of Canterbury and Rochester. We visit great estates where Jane was a frequent and welcome guest; churches where she worshipped; venues where she danced and the turnpike roads along which she travelled recounting varying experiences at coaching inns.

A richly imagined novel inspired by the true story of Anne Sharp, a governess who became very close with Jane Austen and her family by the #1 International bestselling-author of Miss Austen. On January 21, 1804, Anne Sharpe arrives at Godmersham Park in Kent to take up the position of governess. At thirty-one years old, she has no previous experience of either teaching or fine country houses. Her mother has died, and she has nowhere else to go. Anne is left with no choice. For her new charge—twelve-year-old Fanny Austen—Anne's arrival is all novelty and excitement. The governess role is a uniquely awkward one. Anne is neither one of the servants, nor one of the family, and to balance a position between the "upstairs" and "downstairs" members of the household is a diplomatic chess game. One wrong move may result in instant dismissal. Anne knows that she must never let down her guard. When Mr. Edward Austen's family comes to stay, Anne forms an immediate attachment to Jane. They write plays together, and enjoy long discussions. However, in the process, Anne reveals herself as not merely pretty, charming, and competent; she is clever too. Even her sleepy, complacent, mistress can hardly fail to notice. Meanwhile Jane's brother, Henry, begins to take an unusually strong interest in the lovely young governess. And from now on, Anne's days at Godmersham Park are numbered.

INSPIRED BY ACTUAL EVENTS Fifteen-year-old Jane Austen dreams of three things: doing something useful, writing something worthy, and falling madly in love. When she visits her brother in Kent to celebrate his engagement, she meets wealthy, devilishly handsome Edward Taylor—a fascinating young man who is truly worthy of her affections. Jane knows a match between her and Edward is unlikely, but every moment she spends with him makes her heart race—and he seems to return her interest. Much to her displeasure, however, there is another seeking his attention Unsure of her budding relationship, Jane seeks distraction by attempting to correct the pairings of three other prospective couples. But when her matchmaking aspirations do not all turn out as anticipated, Jane discovers the danger of relying on first impressions. The human heart cannot be easily deciphered, nor can it be directed or managed. And if others must be left to their own devices in matters of love and matrimony, can Jane even hope to satisfy her own heart?

This book traces the history of Jane Austen's family from Elizabethan times. The author writes about the various members of her immediate family--her father, her mother, her brothers, James, George, Edward, Henry, Francis and Charles, and her beloved sister, Cassandra. The book also describes the circle of Warren Hastings, and Jane's aunt Mrs. Leigh Perrot, who left her estate to James's son Edward, but who was nearly convicted of stealing and transported to Botany Bay. Readers are shown the contribution each made to Jane Austen's life and art, and the family inheritance that shaped her. Making considerable use of the Austen Papers, George Holbert Tucker has drawn together less well known pieces of information as well as the more familiar biographical details in his intimate portrayal of the Austen family.

Unable to visit his cousins as planned, Mr. Collins invites them to stay at his parsonage the following spring. The Bennets go to Kent expecting a foolish Mr. Collins and an overbearing Lady Catherine de Bourgh. While one is as they expect, the other is surprisingly amiable. When Mr. Darcy and his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam, visit Lady Catherine at the same time, they each begin to focus on a Bennet sister, prodded by well-meaning relations, but spurred on by their own feelings. But though Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth quickly begin to fall in love, there are other elements of both families who are determined to interfere . . . . Chaos Comes to Kent is a short novel of 75,000 words.
