Problem mendasar yang menjadi pekerjaan rumah utama dari Islamic studies, kalau dapat kita tarik sebuah kesimpulan umum, adalah bagaimana cara memahami secara “tuntas” sumber religius Islam (al-Qur’an dan hadits) sebagai teks dan Islam yang hidup di tengah-tengah masyarakat Muslim sebagai konteks di satu sisi, serta bagaimana mendamaikan tarik-menarik antar-keduanya di sisi yang lain. Telah banyak pemikir bertungkus lumus dari generasi ke generasi berupaya ikut dalam urun rembuk untuk mengatasi masalah akbar ini, dan mereka telah meninggalkan berjibun-jibun cara pandang dan seabreg teori, namun rupanya hingga sekarang belum menemukan titik terang penyelesaian. Setali tiga uang, buku ini menjadi bagian dari ikhtiar mendudukkan dan memberikan interupsi atas problem tersebut dalam kontes global dan keindonesiaan. Buku ini merupakan kumpulan 15 artikel para pemikir Islam Indonesia kontemporer yang sebelumnya telah dimuat baik di jurnal nasional maupun jurnal internasional dalam periode 2004–2020. Artikel-artikel tersebut diklasifikasikan dalam empat kelompok tema: “Al-Qur’an, Interpretasi, dan Kolonialisme”; “Keragaman dan Mistifikasi Pemikiran Islam”; “Dinamika Kehidupan Beragama”; dan, “Fenomena Keyakinan terhadap Yang Gaib”. Ke-15 artikel di sini mungkin tidak menampung keseluruhan wacana krusial pemikiran Islam yang timbul dalam bentang waktu 2004–2020, tetapi secara garis besar telah mampu merekam sekaligus menganalisis secara ilmiah problem-problem masyarakat Muslim dan tanggul-tanggul pemikiran Islam yang mampat di sekitar satu setengah dekade itu.

Ide awal buku ini lahir pada penghujung tahun 2020 saat kami menggagas perlunya mengundang ilmuwan sosial politik dari seluruh dunia untuk menulis refleksi bersama atas situasi demokrasi di Indonesia dalam rangka ulang tahun ke-50 LP3ES yang jatuh pada 19 Agustus 2021. Forum itu kemudian kami beri nama Forum 100 Ilmuwan Sosial Politik. Di forum itu, 3-4 orang ilmuwan sosial politik dari berbagai negara di dunia hadir setiap minggu, untuk berbicara di webinar LP3ES tentang berbagai tema, antara akhir Oktober 2020 hingga awal Juni 2021. Tercatat, ada 135 ilmuwan sosial politik (92 laki-laki dan 43 perempuan) yang bergabung bersama kami, baik berbicara dalam webinar, mengirimkan tulisan, ataupun berbicara dan mengirimkan tulisan sekaligus. Dari 135 ilmuwan tersebut, 77 orang (58 laki laki dan 19 perempuan) di antaranya menuliskan refleksi kritis dan mempercayakannya kepada kami untuk diterbitkan di dalam buku ini. Mereka tidak hanya ilmuwan sosial politik dari Indonesia, namun juga 19 Indonesianist dari berbagai negara: Kanada, Australia, Norwegia, Jerman, Tiongkok, Singapura, Inggris, Amerika, Belanda, Perancis, dan Jepang. Kami percaya para penulis itu hadir dengan satu niat tulus dan sederhana: memberikan kontribusi bagi kemajuan demokrasi di Indonesia. Dan barangkall, seperti halnya kami, mereka juga percaya bahwa satu generasi baru Indonesia yang dapat menjawab tuntutan zaman sudah saatnya untuk dilahirkan. Satu siklus dua puluh tahunan yang dimulai dari kelahiran Sumpah Pemuda 1928, Proklamasi Kemerdekaan 1945, pergerakan mahasiswa tahun 1965, Reformasi 1998, dan siapa tahu: 2021! Satu generasi yang lebih bercorak kosmopolitan, yang berisi orang-orang Indonesia ataupun bukan, yang berbagi nasib menyaksikan pandemi yang belum tentu 100 tahun sekali terjadi, yang benaknya prihatin memikirkan kemunduran Indonesia dan bersama-sama melakukan refleksi dalam buku ini! Semoga niat itu sampai ke langit lalu kembali turun ke bumi menjadi butiran-butiran air hujan yang menjadi satu penanda: generasi baru akan segera lahir!

Is the history of the modern world the history of Europe writ large? Or is it possible to situate the history of modernity as a world historical process apart from its origins in Western Europe? In this posthumous collection of essays, Marshall G. S. Hodgson challenges adherents of both Eurocentrism and multiculturalism to rethink the place of Europe in world history. He argues that the line that connects Ancient Greeks to the Renaissance to modern times is an optical illusion, and that a global and Asia-centred history can better locate the European experience in the shared histories of humanity. Hodgson then shifts the historical focus and in a parallel move seeks to locate the history of Islamic civilisation in a world historical framework. In so doing he concludes that there is but one history - global history - and that all partial or privileged accounts must necessarily be resituated in a world historical context. The book also includes an introduction by the editor, Edmund Burke, contextualising Hodgson's work in world history and Islamic history.

Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa terdapat inkonsistensi penyajian wacana dalam buku teks PAI di sekolah dan madrasah, bermuatan toleransi di satu bagian dan bermuatan intoleransi di bagian lain serta terindikasi terinsersi radikalisme. Terdapat bagian dalam buku teks yang hanya menyajikan satu pandangan atas teks keagamaan, eksklusif terhadap perbedaan agama, bias gender dan tidak memperhatikan keragaman etnis dan budaya. Paradigma buku teks pendidikan agama Islam di sekolah dan madrasah dalam konteks lebih pragmatik dengan menyesuaikan perubahan zaman, bukan idealitas. Semakin bertahan dalam idealitas, semakin tidak konsisten. Hasil penelitian ini berupa model penyajian wacana bermuatan intoleransi dan radikalisme dalam buku teks PAI di sekolah dan madrasah. Buku teks Pendidikan Agama Islam terbitan Pemerintah seyogyanya menyajikan berikut. Pertama, menyajikan keragaman pandangan atas teks keagamaan atau permasalahan fikih yang masih dalam perdebatan. Kedua, menyajikan paradigma inklusif terhadap perbedaan agama. Ketiga, menyajikan wacana yang bermuatan inklusif gender Keempat, tidak menyajikan wacana bermuatan intoleransi karena perbedaan etnis dan budaya. Kelima, tidak menyajikan wacana bermuatan radikalisme/kekerasan.
