Britian and Japan in the Contemporary World provides up-to-date analyses of these two countries in terms of economics, politics, security and identity on the global, regional, subnational and civic levels. The book moves beyond an analysis of state-to-state relations between Britain and Japan by examining the role of civil society in the relationship and analyzing the way the two countries deal with common issues, such as the 'special relationship' both maintain with the US; the relationship with the continents that both of these island nations border; the question of the degree of decentralization to allow within their contested borders. Both countries also face the pressures of globalization, as seen by the responses of the global cities of London and Tokyo. The editors have brought a selection of top scholars in a collection of chapters aimed at examining the similarities and differences in the way Britian and Japan respond to issues of common concern on these different levels.

A Familiar Compound Ghost explores the relationship between allusion and the uncanny in literature. An unexpected echo or quotation in a new text can be compared to the sudden appearance of a ghost or mysterious double, the reanimation of a corpse, or the discovery of an ancient ruin hidden in a modern city. In this scholarly and suggestive study, Brown identifies moments where this affinity between allusion and the uncanny is used by writers to generate a particular textual charge, where uncanny elements are used to flag patterns of allusion and to point to the haunting presence of an earlier work. A Familiar Compound Ghost traces the subtle patterns of connection between texts centuries, even millennia apart, from Greek tragedy and Latin epic, through the plays of Shakespeare and the Victorian novel, to contemporary film, fiction and poetry. Each chapter takes a different uncanny motif as its focus: doubles, ruins, reanimation, ghosts and journeys to the underworld.

First study of the fascinating parallelism that characterizes developments in Japan and Germany by one of Germany's leading Japan specialists. With the founding of their respective national states, the Meiji Empire in 1869 and the German Reich in 1871, Japan and Germany entered world politics. Since then both countries have developed in strikingly similar ways, and it is not surprising that these two became close allies during the Second World War, although in the end this proved a "fatal attraction."

Japs written by Army Bureau of Current Affairs and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-15 with categories.

FROM THE FOREWORD This publication is a compilation of articles originally published by the (British) Army Bureau of Current Affairs between 1942 and 1945. ABCA was 'created by the Army Council to "brief" officers for talks to their men on war topics and to provide them with informative "background" on varied aspects of the war.' Its "Current Affairs" and "War" series provided the basis for debate within groups of service personnel. The articles have been reproduced in chronological order of publication, but do not necessarily need to be read in that order. "The Japanese Way" and "How About Japan?," although they come chronologically later, provide an excellent overview of the history, religion, industry and society of Japan, how it came to be at war with China and the West, and its ultimate objectives. Other articles focus specifically on the Burma campaign, the Philippines, and Guadalcanal, in the latter of which ("Be mean, and kill 'em") there is a series of contributions from US servicemen on their experiences in fighting the Japanese. These were designed primarily as tips to British soldiers yet to face the Imperial Army. Despite the constant references to 'Japs' and the caricature illustrations of them in a couple of the pamphlets, the overall tone of the material conveys a grudging respect for the Japanese soldier and sympathy with the Japanese people generally. The blame for Japan's aggression is laid firmly at the door of the military who effectively had control of the government and Emperor. This collection of contemporary WWII writing gives a truly fascinating insight into how the British Army viewed the war in the Far East and provides an informative range of perspectives on the enemy from the Land of the Rising Sun.
