This book presents a study of Japanese involvement in post-Soviet Central Asia since the independence of these countries in 1991, examining the reasons for progress and stagnation in this multi-lateral relationship. Featuring interviews with decision-makers and experts from Japan, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, and the Philippines, this book argues that Japan’s impact on Central Asia and its connectivity has been underappreciated. It demonstrates that Japan’s infrastructural footprint in the New Silk Road significantly pre-dated China’s Belt and Road Initiative, and that the financial and policy contribution driven by Japanese officials was of a similar order of magnitude. It also goes on to show that Japan was the first major power outside of post-Soviet Central Asia to articulate a dedicated Silk Road diplomacy vis-à-vis the region before the United States and China, and the first to sponsor pivotal assistance. Being the first detailed analytical account of the diplomatic impact made on the New Silk Road by various Japanese actors beyond formal diplomacy, this book will be useful to students and scholars of Japanese politics, as well as Asian politics and international politics more generally.

Turn Right For Japan Cycling The Silk Road To The Orient written by Steve Anthony Tallon and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-11 with Travel categories.

After a decade of overwork, fidgety food and a sensory overload of noise and neon, British expat Steve Tallon needed a break from Japan. So he took a world map, drew a line between London and Tokyo and wondered... could he cycle it? As he turned off his computer and rode the office elevator for the last time, little could he imagine that he would soon be squashing scorpions on the floors of Central Asian teahouses, cavorting with small time Uzbek mobsters and spending solitary, spectacular nights in the Gobi Desert under stars so bright they hurt. With humour, humility and cringeworthy honesty, Steve presents an entertaining from-the-saddle account of faraway desert nations, leg-thrashing mountains and eye-opening conversations from a legion of colourful characters encountered along the way. In Turn Right for Japan, follow Steve as he puffs his way into fitness, confronts loneliness and constantly doubts his resolve, yet somehow arrives in Tokyo some 10,000 hard-earned miles later. From Belgrade to Bishkek, Tabriz to Turkmenistan, fill your water bottles, saddle up and enjoy the ride!

This book analyzes initiatives and concepts initiated by China, Japan and South Korea (the Republic of Korea) toward Central Asia to ascertain their impact on regionalism and regional cooperation in Central Asia. Using the case study of Uzbekistan, the book focuses on the formation of the discourse of engagement with the region of Central Asia through the notion of the Silk Road narrative. The author puts forward the prospects for engagement and cooperation in the region by analyzing initiatives such as the Eurasian/Silk Road Diplomacy of Japan of 1997, the Shanghai Process by China, the Korean corporate offensive, and other so-called Silk Road initiatives such as One Belt One Road (OBOR) or the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The book argues that material factors and interests of these states are not the only motivations for engagement with Central Asia. The author suggests that cultural environment and identity act as additional behavioral incentives for the states' cooperation as these factors create a space for actors in global politics. The book deconstructs Chinese narratives and foreign policy toward smaller states and presents a more balanced account of Central Asian international relations by taking into account Japanese and South Korean approaches to Central Asia. This book encourages wider theoretical discussions of Central Asian-specific forms of cooperation and relationships. It provides a timely analysis of Central Asian international relations and is a helpful reference for researchers and students in the fields of international relations, security studies, Asian politics, global politics, Central Asian Studies and Silk Road studies.

SYNOPSIS. An American family establishes a textile business in Shanghai in the year 1933. Japan has amassed its forces in Manchuria in preparation for the invasion of China. The story spans five decades of accurate history - spiced with murder, betrayal, revenge, and the thread of an enduring love.New York 1933.Ruben Stone, with his seventeen-year-old son Charles, arrive in Shanghai on the eve of both a civil war and Japanese incursion - determined to establish a successful trading company. They settle into a luxurious cottage within the exotic Anglo - International Settlement.Longing for the respect denied half-breeds, the beautiful Eurasian, Apricot Cort, seeks the security that can only be provided by a Caucasian husband, and joins the Stone's new company. The young Korean genius, Bo Han, also joins the Stones, intent on fulfilling his own fantasies of grandeur. Young Charles soon falls desperately in love with Apricot, only to be tormented by her preference for his father. The Stone's align their business interests with the Warlord, Chin Wan, who assures their young company of a continuous supply of raw silk.Japan's army destroys Shanghai with the exception of the Warlord's weaving factory. In the face of an ongoing war, the Warlord increases his production without the benefit of additional laborers. Charles and Bo Han visit the Warlord's factory and witness the ancient Chinese art of Szu Hasing. Bo Han is enthralled with the concept of a mind-altering program that empowers laborers to work double shifts. Charles is repelled by it.America's declaration of war, following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, strips the Stones of their neutrality. With the world engulfed in war, the universal demand for the diminishing supply of Chinese silk textiles soars. The Warlord miraculously maintains his production, enabling the Stones to reap enormous profits. The business community flees Shanghai for the relative safety of Hong Kong. Seduced by their great success, Ruben and Charles greedily elect to stay.Ruben is killed in the Japanese bombing of Shanghai. Apricot turns to a maturing Charles. Both are unaware that their friend, Bo Han, also desires Apricot and considers Charles expendable.Apricot, Charles, and Bo Han vacate the Shanghai office for the relative safety of the International Settlement. The Settlement soon falls under the command of Captain Hayashi of the Imperial Japanese Army. The Captain is intrigued by Bo Han's understanding of Szu Hasing, and agrees to spare Apricot and Charles in return for his knowledge of thought reform. As World War ll draws to an end, Apricot and Charles flee Shanghai before the advancing Chinese Communist Army, for the presumed safety of Hong Kong. Not wishing to add to Charles worries, Apricot does not tell him she is pregnant. Unwilling to risk the life of her unborn child, she tricks Charles into swimming the narrow bay that separates Hong Kong from mainland China, alone, and is soon committed to a Communist work camp. Captain Hayashi and Bo Han flee China for Japan. After the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Bo Han returns to his ancestral home in Seoul, only to find himself, five years later, caught in the Korean Civil War. He learns that North Korea, desperate for a formidable weapon, has revived the art of Szu Hasing. (brain washing) Bo Han carefully incorporates their methods into what he has already learned from the Warlord.Nine years pass before Apricot manages to smuggle her daughter to Seoul Korea, and to Bo Han, who is in the midst of establishing his international cult. (Moonies) Bo Han refuses to pay the ransom that would rescue Apricot.Civilian Hayashi develops his small commercial business, into Japan's largest trading company. The civil war leaves South Korea victorious but devastated. Bo Han transforms his seemingly benevolent orphanage into an international cult of profitable children's communes.

Beneath the modern skyscrapers of Singapore lie the remains of a much older trading port, prosperous and cosmopolitan and a key node in the maritime Silk Road. This book synthesizes 25 years of archaeological research to reconstruct the 14th-century port of Singapore in greater detail than is possible for any other early Southeast Asian city. The picture that emerges is of a port where people processed raw materials, used money, and had specialized occupations. Within its defensive wall, the city was well organized and prosperous, with a cosmopolitan population that included residents from China, other parts of Southeast Asia, and the Indian Ocean. Fully illustrated, with more than 300 maps and colour photos, Singapore and the Silk Road of the Sea presents Singapore's history in the context of Asia's long-distance maritime trade in the years between 1300 and 1800: it amounts to a dramatic new understanding of Singapore's pre-colonial past.
