Learn the elements of the timeless beauty that is Japanese design in this concise reference volume. Japanese design is known throughout the world for its beauty, its simplicity, and its blending of traditional and contemporary effects. This succinct guide describes the influence and importance of 65 key elements that make up Japanese design, detailing their origins—and their impact on fields ranging from architecture and interior design to consumer products and high fashion. Learn, for example, how the wabi sabi style that's so popular today developed from the lifestyle choices made by monks a thousand years ago. And how unexpected influences—like tatami (straw mats) or seijaku (silence)—have contributed to contemporary Japanese design. Elements of Japanese Design offers new insights into the historical and cultural developments at the root of this now international aesthetic movement. From wa (harmony) to kaizen (continuous improvement), from mushin (the empty mind) to mujo (incompleteness), you'll discover how these elements have combined and evolved into a powerful design paradigm that has changed the way the world looks, thinks and acts. Chapters include: Washi, Paper with Character Ikebana, Growing Flowers in a Vase Bukkyo, The Impact of Buddhism Shibui, Eliminating the Unessential Kawaii, The Incredibly "Cute" Syndrome Katana, Swords with Spirit

During America's Gilded Age (dates), the country was swept by a mania for all things Japanese. It spread from coast to coast, enticed everyone from robber barons to street vendors with its allure, and touched every aspect of life from patent medicines to wallpaper. Americans of the time found in Japanese art every design language: modernism or tradition, abstraction or realism, technical virtuosity or unfettered naturalism, craft or art, romance or functionalism. The art of Japan had a huge influence on American art and design. Title compares juxtapositions of American glass, silver and metal arts, ceramics, textiles, furniture, jewelry, advertising, and packaging with a spectrum of Japanese material ranging from expensive one-of-a-kind art crafts to mass-produced ephemera. Beginning in the Aesthetic movement, this book continues through the Arts & Crafts era and ends in Frank Lloyd Wright's vision, showing the reader how that model became transformed from Japanese to American in design and concept. Hannah Sigur is an art historian, writer, and editor with eight years' residence and study in East and Southeast Asia. She has a master's degree from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and is completing a PhD in the arts of Japan. Her writings include co-authoring A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (Timber Press, 2002), which is listed in "The Best Books of 2002" by The Christian Science Monitor and is now in its second edition; and "The Golden Ideal: Chinese Landscape Themes in Japanese Art," in Lotus Leaves, A Master Guide to the Art of Floral Design (2001). She lives in Berkeley.

The Museum of Modern Art and 5 Continents Editions recently launched this series of books dedicated to industrial and graphic design. Each volume offers an overview of a single country's design achievements and illustrates its particular design history and aesthetic by showcasing renowned architects and designers through exemplary works drawn from The Museum of Modern Art's unmatched collection. This season, they take on Japan. Japanese designers' special ability to combine aesthetic tradition with contemporary visual culture and material innovation has created a distinctive and exceptionally successful design industry in Japan, which has produced such divergent icons of Modern design as Sori Yanagi's Butterfly Stool, the Sony Walkman, the Honey-Pop Armchair by Tokujin Yoshioka and the Toyota Prius. This volume traces the development of Japanese design from the country's craft revival in the early twentieth century to the extraordinary objects of high technology that have been a specialty of Japanese designers since the middle of the century. Antonelli's lively introduction provides an overview of Japan's design culture, while an essay and timeline by Penny Sparke illuminate the masterpieces of Modern Japanese design that are superbly reproduced in this volume's plate section.

Japanese Design written by Ken Straiton and has been published by Weatherhill, Incorporated this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Art categories.

Japanese design is admired the world over, in part because it is so prominently incorporated into the ordinary, infusing scenes and objects of everyday life with a power to ascetically please. Contemplating its subtlety and strength can prove revelatory to those nurtured in Western artistic traditions, where design is often simply decoration created through symmetry and elaboration. Photographer Kenneth Straiton's Collection of extraordinary images or ordinary scenes provokes this revelation, training the viewer to look at design, and Japan, in a new way. The brief text, a preface by the photographer and a foreword by an authority on Japanese aesthetics, provides succinct context for the images, which are identified in captions at the end of the book. Although Japanese design works within a traditional and Asian framework, it seems to encompass all the essentials of Western Modernist style. Yet when one tries to define what exactly characterizes is, the attempt inevitably founders on exceptions. It is not one style or set of principles that sets Japanese design apart, yet there is undeniably, a common underlying quality; that surprising asymmetrical splash of color, which derives perhaps from Zen philosophy, may be a part of tradition that is handed down from China, but it has evolved far in a quintessentially Japanese way. Japanese also honor materials in a way that no other culture does; objects and architecture may at once be very humble and reflect the experience of poverty, while presenting a refinement so sophisticated that they deny the obvious and rich. And finally, of course, there is a spirituality that threads its way through all Japanese aesthetics, connecting it to nature and morality. This book is a comprehensive source-book of evidence for these many fascinating aspects of Japanese design, compiled by one who acknowledges that "photographers are collectors by nature." Yet it is the images themselves, each spectacular in its own right, that have compelled Kenneth Straiton over the past two decades to "document these creations I find profoundly moving in their genius--there is no other word for it."
