In the Japanese language the word ‘ie’ denotes both the materiality of homes and family relations within. The traditional family and family house - often portrayed in ideal terms as key foundations of Japanese culture and society - have been subject to significant changes in recent years. This book comprehensively addresses various aspects of family life and dwelling spaces, exploring how homes, household patterns and kin relations are reacting to contemporary social, economic and urban transformations, and the degree to which traditional patterns of both houses and households are changing. The book contextualises the shift from the hegemonic post-war image of standard family life, to the nuclear family and to a situation now where Japanese homes are more likely to include unmarried singles; childless couples; divorcees; unmarried adult children and elderly relatives either living alone or in nursing homes. It discusses how these new patterns are both reinforcing and challenging typical understandings of Japanese family life.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Medien / Kommunikation - Interkulturelle Kommunikation, Note: 1,3, Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Japan ist wie einige weitere ostasiatische Länder in der westlichen Presse oft Gegenstand von Kritik, weil das als wirtschaftlich stark und technologisch weit entwickelte Volk aus westlicher Sicht diskriminierend und veraltet wirkt, wenn es um die Rolle der Frau geht. Die Kritik baut auf Fakten auf, beleuchten doch Statistiken und Untersuchungen viele Ungleichheiten im Geschäftsleben von verschiedenen Seiten. Sie dokumentieren eine absolute Minderzahl von Frauen in Führungspositionen und eine Vielzahl von weiblichen Hochschulabsolventen, die trotz erfolgreichen Abschlusses Tätigkeiten mit geringen Verantwortlichkeiten wie der Positioneiner sogenannten "Office Lady" wahrnehmen . Andere verzichten völlig auf eine berufliche Karriere. Doch reichen bloße Zahlen für ein wirklich treffendes Urteil? Die Gleichberechtigung von Mann und Frau in der Arbeitswelt ist im interkulturellen Dialog ein sensibles Thema und um ihm gerecht zu werden, bedarf es dem Heranziehen von verschiedenen Faktoren. Meine Arbeit soll eben diese Tatsache verdeutlichen, indem etwa die Einflüsse des japanischen Wertesystems und das Verständnis von Rollenverteilung im Alltag klar gemacht werden. Zudem ist jeder Befund schwer zu bewerten, sofern er ohne Vergleich beurteilt wird. Es gilt also außerdem herauszufinden, ob die vermeintlich benachteiligte Stellung der Frau im Beruf in Japan tatsächlich als absolut konservativ zu sehen ist, bzw. ob etwa westeuropäische Länder diesbezüglich andere Strukturen aufweisen. Auch ist es unerlässlich, über die zahlenbelasteten Theorie der Statistiken hinauszugehen und einen Blick in die Praxis zu werfen. This volume explores the political and social backgrounds of the ongoing history textbook controversy in Japan. In chapter 1, the resurgence since the 1990s of the conservative interpretation of history known as historical revisionism, which aims to support history education in schools that serves the strengthening of national pride, is identified as the major reason for the renewed debate. The remainder of the chapter traces the diverse connections of historical revisionism with Japanese domestic politics. Chapter 2 demonstrates that, as a consequence of this strong connection between revisionism and politics, the views of Japan's recent history underlying the "culture of memory" as it is manifested in the public sphere-in memorials, museums and ceremonies-are increasingly similar to those advocated by historical revisionism. This is particularly true regarding the interpretation of the Asia-Pacific War (1931-1945), which here is often depicted as a defensive war or as a war waged for the "liberation" of Asia, following the affirmative view of the war urged by revisionists. But however forcefully expressed, these views fall short of reflecting a consensus on history in Japanese society at large. In chapter 3, a number of opinion surveys inquiring into the "historical consciousness" of the Japanese are analyzed. The results of these surveys indicate that revisionist views face an uphill battle in Japanese society and rather have to be considered a minority view at present. The explosive character of the history textbook controversy above all reflects the discrepancy between the historical views of the political class and those promoted in the public sphere on the one hand and those predominant in the wider society on the other. The anticipated next round of the history textbook debate, in the 60th anniversary year of the end of the war, will not be adequately understood without sufficient knowledge of the backgrounds to the debate and the issues related to it.

In A New History of Japanese Cinema Isolde Standish focuses on the historical development of Japanese film. She details an industry and an art form shaped by the competing and merging forces of traditional culture and of economic and technological innovation. Adopting a thematic, exploratory approach, Standish links the concept of Japanese cinema as a system of communication with some of the central discourses of the twentieth century: modernism, nationalism, humanism, resistance, and gender. Moving into the late thirties and early forties, Standish analyses cinema's relationship with the state-focusing in particular on the war and occupation periods. The book concludes with an investigation of genre and gender in mainstream films of recent years. English summary: Anneli Wallentowitz analzyes the formation and further development of the term imperialism (teikoku-shugi) in the Japanese language at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Drawing on the framework of European conceptual history, the study aims at understanding the formation of a non-European term while taking into account the historical context of translation-words in the Japanese language. Although the word imperialism itself was included in Japanese-foreign language dictionaries as early as the 1870s, a wider meaning including aspects such as expansion, colonial rule and world politics, was only ascribed to it around the turn of the century. This development, which can be observed through contemporary Japanese-language sources, was the result of a growing public interest in the meaning of the term imperialism at the time. The dissertation also introduces works by Japanese authors whose opinions on the nature of imperialism contributed greatly to the development of these new definitions of the Japanese term teikoku-shugi. Jahrhundert, dass das Wort innerhalb weniger Jahre eine deutlich breitere Bedeutung erhalt. Neue Wortinhalte wie Expansion, Koloniale Herrschaft und Weltpolitik deuten darauf hin, dass in Japan an der Jahrhundertwende eine tiefgreifende Auseinandersetzung mit dem Phanomen Imperialismus stattgefunden haben muss, welche eine langfristige Erweiterung der Wortbedeutung ermoglichte.
