Descripción / Resumen (Inglés): When you enter the Sant Jordi Hall of the Palau de la Generalitat, if you raise your head, it is very likely that the first figure you see painted on the ceiling is that of Balmes. There are also those of Torras y Bages (opposite to the one of Balmes), Llorens and Beard, Menéndez Pelayo, et cetera. But the one of Balmes emphasizes by the place that occupies. As is well known, the current murals were painted during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera to replace the frescoes of Torres García novecentistas, which was little successful in showing the essentially Spanish nature of the Catalan spirit and the contributions he had made to the Nation. Well, today, when one enters the Hall and contemplates the portrait of Balmes, up there, presiding over the central part of the ship, they assault him over two questions. First: if today it is necessary to re-decorate the ceiling of the Hall, the artist or institution would paint thinkers? Second: if the Hall were to be remodeled and the decision was taken to remove or start the current frescoes, what would be the picture of Balmes? The observation about the Sant Jordi Hall and the resulting concerns help us to characterize the delicate situation that today maintains Catalan culture with the legacy and the figure of Jaume Balmes. But they also help us to see the relationship that contemporary Catalan culture maintains with nineteenth-century philosophical thinking. All this, in some way, is what he wanted to address at the Trias Symposium that took place on November 23 and 24, 2016 in Vic. The book he has in his hands is the witness.

This volume helps us to understand that the current political disorders in Catalonia have deep cultural roots. It focuses on the rise of Catalan cultural, national and linguistic identity in the 20th century. What is happening in Catalonia? What lies behind its political conflicts? Catalan identity has been evolving for centuries, starting in early medieval ages (11th and 12lve centuries). It is not a modern phenomenon. The emergence of imperial Spain in the 16 c. and the French Ancien Régime in the 17 c. correlates with a decline of Catalan culture, which was politically absorbed by the Spanish state after the conquest of Barcelona in 1714. However, Catalan language and culture flourished again under the stimulus of the European Romantic Nationalism movement (known as the Renaixença in Catalonia). During the first Dictatorship (Primo de Rivera, 1923-1930), the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the long Francoist era (1939-1975), Catalan language and culture were repressed, yet refurbished and reconstructed at the same time. This rise of a plural, complex, and non-homogeneous Catalan identity constitutes the subject matter of this volume. National conflicts that emerged later in the Spanish democratic state leant heavily on the life engagement and vital commitment experienced by the entrenched intellectual movements of the twentieth century in Catalonia, Valencian Country and the Balearic Islands. This book reveals the cultural and literary grassroots of these conflicts.

In 1958, artist Joan Miró and critic Yvon Taillandier sat down for an in-depth discussion on Miró's life and work. Their conversation, one of the most illuminating and insightful looks into Miró's philosophy and creative process, was first published in a limited edition of seventy five copies in 1964. Though long out of print, this bilingual "treasure," in the words of Maria Popova, "remains the most direct and comprehensive record of Miró's ideas on art." This beautiful new edition presents an updated English translation of Miró's invaluable text in an elegant and striking package. In addition to Taillandier's original foreword, a new preface by preeminent Miró scholar Robert Lubar provides wider context and insight. An appendix includes the original French text in its entirety. Joan Miró: I Work Like a Gardener brings to life the words and work of one of the most beloved and influential artists of the twentieth century.

A selection from the works of the Catalan Franciscan, Francesc Eiximenis. Francesc Eiximenis is an outstanding figure in the ranks of the mendicant orders who, in the late Middle Ages, strove to educate the lower echelons of society. Born in Gerona, around 1330, probably to a comfortable middle-class family, Eiximenis entered the Franciscan order at a very early age, studied in Oxford, and probably also in Paris, and obtained the degree of master of theology in Toulouse. Later he combined teaching with the composing of his works. Among these stands out the monumental and widely known Lo Crestià (The Christian), in which Eiximenis aimed to include all contemporary university knowledge, adapted for a lay public whose basic level of instruction was far below that of clerics. The same didactic purpose is seen in the Libro de los ángeles (Book of the Angels), the Libro de las mujeres (Book of the Women) and the Vita Christi. Eiximenis, by then bishop of Elna, died in 1409. Among the many themes that recur in his extensive literary production, this anthology concentrates on his ideas on the transmission of knowledge, on education and on culture. The introduction and selection of texts is by David Guixeras and Xavier Renedo. ROBERT D. HUGHES is a translator and researcher with particular expertise in the fields of fine art, the history of ideas and Catalan culture. Published in association with Editorial Barcino

The Catalan modern classic, first published in 1985, now in its 50th edition, for the first time in English. The beginning of the 20th century: 13-year-old Conxa leaves her home village in the Pyrenees to work for her childless aunt. After years of hardship she finds love with Jaume - a love that will be thwarted by the Spanish Civil War. Approaching her own death, Conxa looks back on a life in which she has lost everything except her own indomitable spirit. Why Peirene chose to publish this book: 'I fell in love with Conxa's narrative voice, its stoic calmness and the complete lack of anger and bitterness. It's a timeless voice, down to earth and full of human contradictory nuances. It's the expression of someone who searches for understanding in a changing world but senses that ultimately there may be no such thing.' Meike Ziervogel 'Sparse and haunting.' Katy Guest, Independent 'The compression is so deft, the young narrator's voice so strong, so particular, her straightforward evocation of the hard labour and rare pleasures of mountain life . . . so vibrant, that it makes me want to take scissors to everything else I read.' Richard Lea, Guardian 'A Pyrenean life told in a quietly effective voice.' Daniel Hahn, Independent 'There is an understated power in Barbal's depiction of how the forces of history can shape the life of the powerless.' Adrian Turpin, Financial Times 'A masterpiece of world literature and a shining example of the virtuosity of elegant and concise prose.' Pam Norfolk, Lancashire Evening Post 'Air-tight believability.' Matthew Tree, Times Literary Supplement INDEPENDENT BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2010 FOYLES BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2010
