The Classroom Guide to Jazz Improvisation dispels the misconception that one must be a jazz expert to give students a solid foundation in jazz improvisation. Authors John McNeil and Ryan Nielsen argue that all individuals possess an innate ability to improvise and that, given sufficient exposure and repetition, anyone can improvise in music as successfully as they improvise in life. Drawing on their shared 54 years of teaching experience and extensive work as professional jazz musicians, McNeil and Nielsen offer classroom-tested lesson plans for music educators of all backgrounds, removing the guesswork and mystique along the way.

Jazz is a musical language whose mastery is a life-long pursuit of both the truth of the music and the career that enables that journey. "Skills for the Poetic Language of Jazz Improvisation" is perhaps the first music education book of its kind that holistically mentors the aspiring artist in both the musical and the professional aspects of a career that seeks out that truth and brings that artist's voicing of the "poetic language of jazz" to the public. One of the premiere Jazz performers and music educators of our time, vibraphonist Mark Sherman has transformed his decades of that personal pursuit, and lectures to his students at the Juilliard School, to a book that brings wisdom, perspective and balance to that elusive search for an ideal of musical expression in Jazz improvisation. Improbasen is a Norwegian private learning centre that offers beginner's instrumental tuition within jazz improvisation for children between the ages of 7 and 15. This book springs out of a two-year ethnographic study of the teaching and learning activity at Improbasen, highlighting features from the micro-interactions within the lessons, the organisation of Improbasen, and its international activity. Music teachers, students, and scholars within music education as well as jazz research will benefit from the perspectives presented in the book, which shows how children systematically acquire tools for improvisation and shared codes for interplay. Through a process of guided participation in jazz culture, even very young children are empowered to take part in a global, creative musical practice with improvisation as an educational core. This book critically engages in current discussions about jazz pedagogy, inclusion and gender equity, beginning instrumental tuition, creativity, and authenticity in childhood.
