Jean Depara (1928-1997) launched his career as the official photographer of celebrated Zairian singer Franco. Prowling bars and clubs, the night owl Depara became the key chronicler of Kinshasa social life in the era when the Rumba and Cha Cha defined the city's rhythm. His photographs show an Africa stripped of its conventional social codes, where hipsters reign supreme.

Jean Marie del Moral started his career in the 1970s, when he photographed the social movements that were taking place in France and the Carnation Revolution in Portugal for left-wing newspapers. After, he started capturing the studios of famous artists beginning with Joan Miro's in Palma (Spain) in 1978. From then on, he would follow the imagery of countless Spanish and international artists. His work has been published in prestigious international magazines. His first solo exhibitions took place in 1987 and 1988. He has also directed documentaries on Pablo Picasso and Miquel Barcelo. This new book belongs to the PHotoBolsillo series, which publishes monographs on the most important Spanish, Latin American and African photographers in a didactic and affordable format. Carlos Saura (Huesca, 1932) is one of the key photographers who portrayed a time in Spanish history which now seems almost forgotten. Saura takes us to places that we barely recognise nowadays: a miserable Spain, with its villages of unpaved streets, adobe houses, peasants fighting the cold with blankets, men whose only means of transport are donkey carriages, women in black . . . A Spain that reflects the traditions and habits of its people. The rich sepia tone of a photograph by Luis González Palma (born 1957) is unmistakable: he colors his prints by hand but always leaves the whites of his portrait subject's eyes untinted to elicit a disconcerting but penetrating gaze. Working from Guatemala City since the 1980s, and exhibiting internationally since about 1989, Palma has made his long-term project the documentation of his country's indigenous Mayan population, which governmental policy has ferociously repressed during the last half-century. Often collaged with symbols and objects, Palma's pictures act as records of a population for whom violence and mysticism coexist. Colloquia, a more recent project, gathers portraits of Guatemalan artists as part of a larger effort to establish a museum for contemporary Guatemalan art. PHotoBolsillo's introduction to Palma's work surveys over two decades of his highly romantic and politically urgent photography.
